Jane e il prigioniero di Wool House
Jane e il prigioniero di Wool House: Un'indagine per la detective Jane Austen | Stephanie Barron
9 posts | 11 read | 4 to read
Southampton, 1807.

I‘m really enjoying getting to know a different Austen relative in each book! And I really liked how this one resolved, Barron is doing such a good job of keeping this series from becoming formulaic.

#janeandtheexcellentreadalong (many months late!)

“In her sixth engrossing outing, Jane Austen employs her delicious wit and family ties to the Royal Navy in a case of murder on the high seas. Somewhere in the picturesque British port of Southampton, among a crew of colorful, eccentric, and fiercely individual souls, a killer has come ashore. And only Jane can fathom the depths of his ruthless mind....” ~ Publisher

1)when Jane discovers Bonsen‘s Mate is a person, not a tavern.
2)” I have heard nothing of Lord Harold Trowbridge, since parting from him at Blackwell September,I have no expectation of a furtherance of our acquaintances. In deed,in regarding the inner oppression that so often follows a sojourn in his company, I‘ve lately begun to wonder whether I should leave off the acquaintance entirely. 🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 But I have not the heart for a formal break in friendship, nor, indeed, the strength. Hope of once more encountering The Gentleman Rogue, I confess, is one of the few impulses that sustains me in such a raw and un lovely February.” Jane is at a low point and missing Lord Harold. #FebruaryBlues (edited) 2y
kspenmoll 3)loved Bonsun‘s Mate- eccentric, seasoned sailor, kind, suspicious regarding inquires about his daughter, protector. 4) the identity of the murderer was a total surprise! 5) All the naval history. 6)winter to me is cold, dreary, rain with little snow this year, short days, gloomy. Spring is my favorite season-buds, greenery, flowering trees, warmer weather, a time of renewal within & without. 7) if early 1800s, stay home-scared of open sea.🔽 (edited) 2y
kspenmoll 🔼If now, I love ferries- my husband surprised us with a trip (about 20 years ago )from CT to FL, that included taking every available ferry along the way! 8)dodge chamberpots rather than stay in the stench of the Wool House. I would throw up in there. (edited) 2y

kspenmoll I loved this book- different of aspect of Jane‘s life- by the sea, sharing her brother‘s naval life . 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm so glad you enjoyed! It was interesting to see a different aspect of Jane's life. I missed Lord Harold too! I think ferries are fascinating probably because we don't have any in Oklahoma. 😄 2y
suvata 1. Standout moments: Jane‘s visit to Wool House was horrific.
2. Favorite quote: “I confess that I prefer a sense of loss—and its attendant spirit, depression—to ignorance of my own heart.”
3. Favorite character: Ever-faithful, Jenny.
4. Anything surprised you: That LaForge was an agent of the Crown.
5. Something you learned about Jane or her time: Bells were the time-keeping system aboard ship - Fascinating how that worked.
2y
suvata 6. How do you feel about winter? Love or hate? Most of my life I lived in Michigan. Now I live in Florida. I prefer visiting the snow and living in warmth.
7. I would rather: I‘m a home-body -- too old for sea adventuring.
8. I would rather: I‘m a pretty good dodger.
9. Any other random thoughts: This series is so well-written and the plots so complex. No fluff here!

Time for Being a Jane Austen Mystery Book Club‼️
1️⃣ After the grandeur of Chatsworth with #JaneandtheStillroomMaid it was interesting to see a different side of Jane's life with her Navy Captain brother Frank.
2️⃣ Two favorite quotes.
"I expect a severe March, a wet April, and a sharp May,” I returned. “But we may hold out hope for June, Mary. What would England be, after all, without her June?”
“Scotland,” ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig And learning that Jane believes it's 5 o'clock somewhere:
“I believe, my dear, that we should fortify ourselves with a glass of wine.”
“But it is barely ten o‘clock in the morning, Jane!”
“And the sun is not yet over the yardarm.” I smiled up at him. “Consider, Frank, that if you were in the Indies now— or rounding the Horn…”⬇️

2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ Jenny for how she embellished Jane's story of why they were searching for The Bosun‘s Mate. Missed Lord Harold!
4️⃣ Frenchman's story.
5️⃣ Jiggery- pokery. It's my new favorite phrase.
6️⃣ I love the quiet of winter after the holidays. I'm actually always a bit sad to see it ending. Spring brings so much busyness.⬇️
2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ I rather wait at home warm and snug. Especially in Jane's time. Can you imagine the smell on those boats.
8️⃣ Dodge the chamberpots. At least you're outside in the fresh air. Wool House probably smelled worse than ship did.
9️⃣ I had this exact conversation with my mother countless times. "There is nothing wrong with you, as you very well know, that a little activity should not cure. You are too much indisposed. Fresh air is what you require.”
