Mole People: Life in the Tunnels Beneath New York City
Mole People: Life in the Tunnels Beneath New York City | Jennifer Toth
11 posts | 11 read | 35 to read
Thousands of people live in the subway, railroad, and sewage tunnels that form the bowels of New York City and this book is about them, the so-called mole people. They live alone and in communities, in subway tunnels and below subway platforms and this fascinating study presents how and why people move underground, who they are, and what they have to say about their lives and the topside world they ve left behind."

“If I had it to do again, I wouldn‘t”
Toth writes the fascinating but harrowing tales of the people living underground in the tunnels of NYC. Gripping because it‘s just so unbelievably real.
Picked this up as Sandi Toksvig was talking about it on a podcast - glad I read it, even though it was so difficult.

TheNeverendingTBR Interesting 4y
Freespirit Wow..amazing and sad 4y
Suet624 Why can‘t the U.S. take care of its people. So sad. 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I absolutely loved this book. Written in 1993, it is a fascinating look at the homeless who live underground in NYC. Despite some criticism that Toth‘s encounters don‘t check out fact wise (solely based on her geographic descriptions on the different underground locations), I thought it seemed very authentic. If some of it is made up or exaggerated, oh well. It‘s a great read anyway. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #newyearwhodis

emilyhaldi I'm so happy that you chose to read this one!! AND loved it!!! It's so random but also a topic that I'm so intrigued by 😜 5y

I bought this book the first time I visited NYC, just over 10 years ago.

As I recall it‘s a difficult but fascinating read about people living in the tunnels beneath the streets - perhaps time for a re-read.....

RohitSawant Sounds so interesting! 6y
Cinfhen That‘s so sad and a little bit Ninja Turtles 🐸😉 6y

Ok litsy....I need an answer. Years ago, I want to say the early '90s. I bought a fiction book at a used book store. It had a ton of information about the people who live underground in NYC. The book, if I remember correctly, was a murder mystery or a thriller. Anyone want to give it a guess. I cannot think of it for the life of me. I would love to revisit this read. Help please!

RanaElizabeth One of the early Pendergast books had "mole people". 7y
Reecaspieces @RanaElizabeth you are correct! I read that one. And it was delicious!!! The one I am wanting to remember is by an obscure author or maybe it was the first one by that author. This is a quandary!! (edited) 7y
Reecaspieces Come on @MrBook give me the answer....HELP!! 7y

julesG Would have said "Reliquary" as well. ? 7y
RanaElizabeth @Reecaspieces Damn, knew my guess was too easy! 7y
Reecaspieces @julesG @RanaElizabeth thanks so much for giving it a shot....I knew this was going to be tough.. 7y
RanaElizabeth @Reecaspieces I love these type of mysteries! I assume it's not the debunked non-fiction? 7y
Reecaspieces @RanaElizabeth you are right. It was a fiction book (edited) 7y
Reecaspieces @ChasingOm do not think so...but it looks delicious so I will add it to my never ending TBR list! 7y
ChasingOm 🙈😄 7y
ApoptyGina69 Did you ever watch L & O:Criminal Intent? There was a Goren/Eames ep with this same theme. I tried looking for the name of it bc might lead to a clue about your book, like "based on..." No luck and I've seen it a zillion times in reruns. I will keep trying. 7y
Cortg Maybe something from this list published in the 70's or 80's https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_books_set_in_New_York_City 7y
ReadingRover There is a whole Goodreads group dedicated to finding books that you can't remember the titles of. You should check it out. Also you can start by plugging questions about the book into google and it may come up. 7y
Reecaspieces @ApoptyGina69 thank you. I also think there was an episode like it on law and order svu 7y
Reecaspieces @Cortg oh wow!! Thanks!! 7y
Reecaspieces @ReadingRover did not know that! Thanks will definitely try the goodreads. 7y
Reecaspieces @GarthRanzz that in is too new. But it looks delicious 7y
dragondrool @Reecaspieces There's a Sara Paretsky mystery caled Tunnel Vision that I think had people in tunnels. It's Chicago, though. It's been a long time since I read it, so my memory could be fuzzy. 7y
Reecaspieces @dragondrool thank you!! I will check it out! 7y

Mdargusch Is this non fiction? 7y
emilyhaldi @Mdargusch yes it's non fiction. It's a little bit dry to be honest, but there are some fascinating parts. I really thought "mole people" were a myth but they are REAL ? 7y

ScientistSam Looking forward to your review... sounds interesting! If you like mysteries, Linda Fairstein writes a series that takes place in NY. Terminal City discusses the people who live in the tunnels (though it's pretty late in her series and would spoiler some inter-personal stuff with her characters...) 7y
Debiw781 I really enjoyed this book 7y
batsy That sounds fascinating. 7y

#octphotochallenge #reallifeperson here are a bunch of books for this category. It's of my favorite genres. However, I don't love autobiographies. There isn't enough space to say it all! The Monster of Florence got me so interested in Amanda Knox and I now never want to go to Italy. That poor woman. The Mole People was one of my favorites, until I am in a city and think of it 😳 that's all I have room to say 💔😔

GoldenGirl Mole People sounds interesting. ..and oddly familiar! 8y
