Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years
Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years | Sarah Louise Delany
10 posts | 15 read | 11 to read
In their 200+ combined years, Sadie and Bessie Delany have seen it all. They saw their father, who was born into slavery, become America's first black Episcopal bishop. They saw their mother--a woman of mixed racial parentage who was born free--give birth to ten children, all of whom would become college-educated, successful professionals in a time when blacks could scarcely expect to receive a high school diploma. They saw the post-Reconstruction South, the Jim Crow laws, Harlem's Golden Age, and the Civil Rights movement--and, in their own feisty, wise, inimitable way, they've got a lot to say about it.More than a firsthand account of black American history, "Having Our Say" teaches us about surviving, thriving, and embracing life, no matter what obstacles are in our way.

#Juneteenth happens to be my #litsyversary
Four years ago I heard of Litsy and immediately joined. My first Litsy post tagged Having Our Say, which I had read with a book club. The Delany sisters are full of wisdom and encouragement. Their father was born into slavery, their mother was born free. They had much to share and I am thankful they were willing to do so.

I I loved reading about these amazing #sisters when these books first came out about 25 years ago! One was a dentist, another a schoolteacher. Their lives and times were so fascinating.

Wife I tried to talk my daughter into naming my first grandchild Delaney (if a girl) after these two sisters. 7y
CrowCAH Wow that is fascinating! 7y

#FirstEverLitsyPost #booktober Four months ago I posted: Read "Having Our Say" followed by "Go Set a Watchman" and "11.22.63". I did not set out to read such a perfect trio. Sometimes these things just happen.

MrBook Well, @Litsy can be quite encouraging, as are you! I appreciate all of your posts ☺️👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻👌🏻! 8y
CogsOfEncouragement haha I see what you did there 😊 (and I sure hope that I am). As always, thank you @MrBook for taking the time to comment on my posts. It is appreciated. 8y

#septphotochallenge I read this with a book club in January. I checked it out from the library. It was eye opening for me. The sisters went to New York as young adults and the experiences they share of their time there is not what I expected. I was/am naive of the reality to say the least. I'm thankful I read it, and read it with others ready to discuss it. I recommend it to anyone and everyone. #pocauthors #somethingforsept

LauraBeth I read this when it came out and loved it 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I remember these sisters - great memoir! 8y

Their mother chose a husband (their dad) by looking at his character rather than the shade of his skin and the girls respected her for it.

The Delany sisters share countless gems of wisdom as they tell their personal stories. Some of their insights made me cry, some made me laugh.
