Not feeling so great today, so curling up with some warm ginger tea and continuing my journey with Patrick Bateman. #paperback #americanpsycho #breteastonellis #gingertea #coffeemug #cowboycat #orangecatenergy #sick #traumatizing
American Psycho has a certain level of cult status. I found it (intentionally) slow and repetitive in the first half and it perhaps could have made the same point in a shorter novel. It becomes a violent and seriously uncomfortable book, although I imagine more shocking on first publication than it is now in 2024. Nonetheless effective in capturing the ruthless, nihilistic persona of Patrick Bateman - time to watch the film! 6/10

Finally reading this one after having it for almost a year. Featuring my reading journal and my favorite postcard turned bookmark of my friend, Bubbles the chimpanzee. #americanpsycho #breteastonellis #paperback #readingjournal #postcard #bookmark #bubblesthechimp
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ellis blurs the lines of reality. This is quite the satirical waylaying of capitalism and sexism, which I loved. Brilliant at times even. HOWEVER. The animal cruelty and extreme sexual violence were so depraved, I nearly bailed multiple times, which I rarely do. Kept going because surely that was all in his head? I choose to believe it was. The gray ending works well to support this. Still, I‘ll never get over some of the scenes. NEVER. ⬇️
I listened to half of this one because I hadn‘t read it yet, it‘s a #1001books book & I needed it for a challenge prompt.
The story is made up of sterotypes: all women narrator Patrick Bateman meets are “hardbodies”, the repetitive naming of designer brands, the drugs, the booze, the wealth, the boredom, the killings. I despised it and enjoyed it and appreciate what Easton Ellis does.
I totally get it, I don‘t need the second half of the book!
Patrick Bateman has it all. He is rich, he‘s good looking, he‘s smart. He has women and the ability to hold an identity that can be mistaken for human. How could someone as successful and influential as Bateman, end up being as detestable as he is. Well, you see. It‘s not really his fault. He is just a self proclaimed entity after all. Bright side: I at least never have to read this book again. Unlucky side: I can‘t unread it.
What a pile of nonsense.
If there's a point to this book, I missed it entirely.
This book has two tracks.
The first is listing the brand name of every single item of clothing the cast is wearing on any given day.
The second is graphic murder scenes that only a lunatic can come up with.
I was going to give this two stars but seeing as I'll probably never be able to eat brie again, I'm downgrading to one.
Saw American Psycho for the first time. The ending has me, 🤔

Book Review up for "American Psycho" by Bret Easton Ellis!
https://youtu.be/Wc1jsPEqDvE?si=t-kzsXr7BEEvPfTv
My very different bookstore picks today. Eric Carle books are for a baby shower present I am attending today; American Psycho because I‘ve read two others by Brett Easton Ellis, but not his most famous (and controversial).
This is great as far as the writing. It takes you directly into the twisted mind of Patrick Bateman, where sane thoughts can turn disturbing within a sentence, normal and even humorous interactions with others can turn shockingly horrific within a paragraph. This is a good book but it‘s hard to get through. It has graphic violence, gore, and some animal cruelty. I give lower ratings for animal cruelty.

Really enjoyed Less Than Zero and The Shards but after reading 1/3 of this one, I just couldn't go any further. The endless descriptions of what everyone was wearing and eating...I just couldn't.
Maybe it's me.
Probably is.
By the way, I'm wearing a Perry Ellis Portfolio slim fit blue checked shirt, Kenneth Cole pants in Onyx Black and black Cole Haan loafers. Glasses by Calvin Klein and watch by Apple.
My #TitlesAndTunes picks for June
Occasionally I like to read something a little bit darker. Patrick Bateman is a wealthy young stockbroker. He has many guilty pleasures, one of them being serial murder.
For tunes I had to go with ‘Hip To Be Scared‘ by Ice Nine Kills, which was directly inspired by the film adaptation of American Psycho.
#GuiltyPleasure
This was everything I expected but more. It is graphic, horrifying, funny, & intelligent. Passages that made me sick are followed by social exchanges that made me lol. The interchangeability of Patrick‘s fashion plate milieu leads to farce as well as convenient alibis, and it‘s in this ambiguous balance of satire and plot that AP is so strong and makes the hateful gruesomeness bearable. Glad I read it w/a book club so I cld process it.
My first trip ever to The Strand and one of the things I picked up was a blind date with a book! I‘ve never read this but saw the film. I‘m looking forward to diving in!
I started this book a couple years ago. Got about 50 pages in and quit out of boredom. But I had heard many people say how gross this book is, so I decided to try again. I started where I left off. This time I was able to tolerate the overly descriptive writing as Patrick began to slowly reveal his psychopathic tendencies. The reader feels Patrick sliding into madness, but then is left to wonder, did he really?
one of my all-time favourite books. after doing a bit more research into the book whilst preparing for a speech, my love only grew more.
It‘s taken me a couple of months to get through this one as I needed breaks. Although I thought the character study and satire were excellent it was just too graphically violent for me. Overall a pick if you can handle some very gruesome topics
Finished Do androids dream and surprisingly really liked it. American psycho next which I feel should be up my street. I‘m trying to get though some books that I‘ve been meaning to read for years!
Ultimately, I thought American Psycho was just another – quite good, but gimmicky – commentary on Yuppie culture. I didn‘t hate it, but books that make the same point(s) without the chainsaw murders are a dime a dozen. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/american-psycho-bret-easton-ellis/
Well, I FINALLY finished it! Only because I was listening to work. This book should've be a lot shorter. Ya know a few less hooker murders. If I had a nickel for everytime he mentions trump, Perry winters or les miserable... I would be a millionaire! 👆🏼PICTURED👆🏼 Ice Nine Kills frontman, Spencer Charnas, taken from the 'Hip to be Scared' video shoot. Which is based on the movie.
Ew, just ew. Shock writing isn‘t good writing.

Day 146.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.
"A curtain of stars, miles of them, are scattered, glowing, across the sky and their multitude humbles me, which I have a hard time tolerating."
"This is accompanied by a horrible momentary hissing noise actually coming from the wounds in Paul‘s skull, places where bone and flesh no longer connect, and this is followed by a rude farting noise caused by a section of his brain, which due to pressure forces itself out, pink and glistening, through the wounds in his face."
"Mercifully, he pauses, taking a bite out of his brioche, which looks like a sponge drenched in blood—his brioche looks like a big bloody sponge—and he washes it down with a sip from his Corona."

I got through 68 pages. It wasn‘t overly bad but I was completely disinterested. I skipped through to some later sections and the pace and tone remained and so am very happy to bail on this. A case where the movie is better than the book.

Two of them are still on my TBR
This one freaked me out a little. That said, it‘s a wonderfully artistic portrait of the 1980s, consumerism, Wall Street, arrogance, pretentiousness, insanity and violence. It‘s art and a period piece, so take it for what it‘s worth.

Some parts of Bret Easton Ellis‘ American Psycho seem ridiculous until you factor in Patrick Bateman‘s overall privilege. Even as he seems to the reader to unravel his friends brush that off as Patrick “ being Patrick.” The character in the movie is tame compared to the monster in the book. Some scenes I was prepared for but others went way beyond the movie‘s chainsaw scene. I‘m glad that I finished this book. #breteastonellis #americanpsycho
I‘m trying to figure out why none of Patrick‘s neighbors I can smell the stench in his apartment. I‘m also trying to remember if he even had neighbors on his floor in the movie. #AmericanPsycho #BretEastonEllis
I‘m up to page 327. I have 71 pages left and I‘m taking a break for the night. Patrick continues to literally slice and dice his way through this story. It‘s hilarious how no one is taking him seriously. Each time he mentioned something depraved or in the reins people either laugh it off or change the subject. No wonder he‘s insane! #AmericanPsycho #BretEastonEllis
I have 98 pages left to read. Patrick continues to unravel and kill. I made it to another scene that was included in the movie. It was one that involves two women where he ends up killing them. For some reason I thought that the scene was going to be similar to what happened in the movie. The dialogue with similar but the violence was worse. Much worse. #americanpsycho #breteastonellis
It‘s hard not to compare the novel to the film. One thing is clear. The adaptation omitted some pretty dark scenes from the movie. One in particular happened after a lunch date. I feel like the violence in the book trumps the novel. If the rumor is true about the story becoming a TV series then more than likely the screen writers won‘t omit these scenes. #americanpsycho #breteastonellis
Patrick is literally deranged and people just laugh off his comments. I‘m starting to believe that they cannot see the real him. All they see is the insecurity. #AmericanPsycho #BretEastonEllis
Yeah, the movie version of Patrick Bateman has nothing on the novel version. I was finally able to read the part where the two women leave his apartment in tears. That was brutal. #americanpsycho #breteastonellis
