This paragraph describing many of the awful things that women witnessed done by their fathers, husbands, & sons was an eye opening reminder to me that each of us must speak up when we witness wrong or be fairly judged as just as guilty as the one committing the action.

Cathy Williams was a real woman and she did serve in the Buffalo Soldiers disguised as a man. Cathy has a strong voice and demeanor but is undermined by the story itself. Bird has turned her story into a doomed romance. She and Wager Swayne meet on and off again throughout the book and that, more than anything, seems to be the central theme - will they ever have their happy ever after.

So this was weird. Instead of actual profanity, blanks.

Great historical novel. Cathy is an amazing hero and very relatable. I loved the story

An epic historical fiction novel loosely based on the few facts known about Buffalo soldier Pvt. Cathy Williams who enlisted as a man to serve after the Civil War. I didn't realize how invested in the story I really was until the ending, which I promptly re-read ... twice!

I picked this up for the beautiful cover and feel like I got snookered.

The story of Cathy Williams: born a slave, freed by the Union army and later fought as a Buffalo Soldier, disguising herself as a man.

Being a citizen of Europe, I don't know much about the American Civil War and the time thereafter. It was interesting to read Cathy's story, which is based on the few facts known about her.
History made graspable.

My life has been so busy with work, I hadn‘t signed up for any arcs in a year. But recently I signed up for just a small handful, not expecting to hear back. But then this arrived and I quickly realized I had misunderstood what the story is about. But I‘m two pages in and *completely hooked* already. The story of an African-American woman who joined the army in 1866 under the guise of being a man.

On the train to Frankfurt to spend time with my friends. I might be able to visit a bookstore.

I'm trying to read an eGalley, but there're two people a few seats away who talk very animatedly about bad historical romance novels. I'm tempted to join in, not to bash the matter further, just to let them know that a lot gets lost in atrocious translations. 😁

Sitting outside on this mild April evening. I've lit some candles, one of which I got from @LittleWonder last year. Its green tea smell fits the spring smells.
