Looking for a short read? At 167 pages, GO fits the bill. This is quite an interesting novel that clearly depicts the power struggle, class injustice and prejudice within Asian countries and society. Although these are quite serious subjects, the protagonist is funny and witty and makes it feel as if you are sitting in a lounge listening to an old friend telling his story. Highly recommended.

Excited for my September #bookspin #doublespin picks!
Go is a translated book that I got from a previous year's World Book Day and haven't had a chance to read yet.
My library hold on the Once and Future Witches finally came in this week! I loved Harrow's other book the Ten Thousand Doors of January

Here‘s my #BookSpinBingo board for July! My #DoubleSpin is also my IRL book club pick for July, and I‘m excited for the push to read my #BookSpin (tagged), which has been sitting on my Kindle for quite a while!
This novel reminds me a bit of Romeo & Juliet, but the Japanese version. Kaneshiro's work showed me ways in which there is discrimination in Japanese culture and reminded me that discrimination happens everywhere, it is not just a US tragedy.
3.5 stars
I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to make it through this as after the first couple of chapters I was feeling like moving this to my DNF shelf & moving on to another book. Yet I knew it wasn't that long of a book in general & a part of me just couldn't call it quits without seeing it through. So I stuck with it, & in the end I am glad I did. It was far from my fave read of all time- or the year even, but it had it's moments.
One of the books I requested on #Netgalley, hadn't realized it was so short and that it wasn't a recent publication 😅 Still, I'm glad I read it. The story follows Sugihara who was born and raised in Japan but is constantly discriminated for having Korean roots. He's what the Japanese call Zainichi. We see how he lives and the struggles he goes through when he falls in love with a Japanese girl. Really heavy and dark, TW for violence #ownvoice
This year I seem to be getting to the #worldbookday books much quicker than last year.
Unfortunately, I just don't seem to be liking the Japanese books that are being selected.
The book worked for me when it was looking into the tension between Korean living in Japan and the Japanese. The dialogues sounded wooden to me, the love story was not necessary even though it was supposed to be the central topic.
Voting is happening right now on which book we will be reading for June!
Come and vote! ❤️🤓📖❤️

Amazon Publishing gave away this kindle version in honor of World Book Day. I learned aspects of the culture in Japan which I had no knowledge of before. Which is the point of reading a novel translated to English from Japanese. I gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️ on Goodreads.
I loved this book!!! We follow Sugihara, a young Japanese born Korean who lives in Japan, has changed his nationality from North Korean to South, left his North Korean school to go to a Japanese school. Sounds complicated? It is. So much discrimination due to race and ethnicity. But the journey is filled with colorful characters such as his parents and plenty of friends, and The Girl, cause there‘s always A Girl. This was entertaining and hopeful.
This kid‘s a hoot. I‘m a little further but so far it‘s too cool for school.
I just found out today and want to share:

TOB longlist 3 ⭐
Enjoyed the cultural aspects and insight into being of Korean descent in Japan. I just wished it kept along those lines and didn't devolve so much into smexy parts of the YA romance.
This has been sitting on my kindle for a while because I don't usually read ebooks (and my kindle was dead for months). But I finally read it. The story was okay, but not for me. It was your usual teen story. What I did like about it was learning about the struggles and discrimination Koreans living in (and even born in) Japan face. For that, it was worth the read.
It‘s a different YA novel than I‘m used to. It‘s set in Japan and follows a Korean boy born and raised in Japan but is constantly prejudiced against because of his nationality. He is searching for his own voice, while dealing with the problems of a high school boy who‘s an outcast. It explores the tumultuous relationship with his father, deals with an incredible loss, and young love.
Saw this is in the “new” section at the library and thought it looked fantastic, as we don‘t typically see main characters that are ethnically diverse... however, im not totally loving it yet! Hopefully, since it‘s a pretty short book, it‘ll pick up steam soon!
Bailed 2/3rds of the way in. It‘s a wonderful translation, the audio narration was fantastic, and I especially enjoyed the well drawn young Korean-Japanese man‘s character and social context. But this novel devolved into pukeworthy YA romance, and I simply could not bring myself to finish.
This was my kindle first pick for this month. An interesting look at prejudice towards Koreans in Japan told from the perspective of a Korean boy going to a Japanese high school. Sometimes the translations were a bit abrupt and I would have liked this to be a bit longer, but overall I really enjoyed it. If you liked Pachinko, this is a good read dealing with a similar topic in a different way. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
