Pursuit of Love & Love in a Cold Climate: Two Novels (1994) | Nancy Mitford
17 posts | 21 read | 24 to read
The snobbery and false values of the English country nobility are satirized in these two love stories involving the well-established Radlett and Hampton families.

I started this book (it‘s actually 2 connected novels) way back in November when I brought it in a Caribbean cruise. Read about half back then and then finally finished in June. The Amazon show inspired me to read it, and I had a great time with both novels (although I preferred The Pursuit of Love). Milford‘s very dry British humor came across the page well, and I‘m now very interested in exploring the other Mitfords!

I should not have liked this. On the surface, it seems like one of those novels that will annoy you, but I‘ll be danged if I wasn‘t turning pages to see what they would do next. Pursuit, for me, far outshines Cold Climate. The Radlett family is so eccentric, that their absence is keenly felt. Even grouchy, hateful Uncle Matthew. This was like Jersey Shore for rich people. It‘s so dishy, so scathing, and so addictive. I loved it. My April #BookSpin

AshleyHoss820 This also counts for my #RoryGilmoreChallenge ☺️ (edited) 3y

I‘m behind but I promise I have a good reason! I got my placement for student teaching, so we are moving! I have 4 weeks left in the semester, so I‘m doing homework and packing…😩😂 I‘m trying to sneak in some reading, but I think most of that will happen this summer! Plenty of time to catch up! ☺️ These are my books for April‘s #bookspin and #doublebookspin (a Rory Gilmore book and a 1,001 book titled A-H)

Chrissyreadit Congrats and good luck! 3y
BarbaraBB Congrats! Where are you moving to? 3y

Finished this book of two novels last night and am absolutely now a Nancy Mitford fan. Described as ‘delicious, utterly wicked and compulsively delightful exposés‘ on the back cover - I agree, but there‘s more than that. Laughed out loud so much, and was also wistful. Lovely!

I have been meaning to read this forever because I love anything Mitford and because of the amazing cover. Should I move it up on my TBR list? #heylove #septemberdanes

batsy Loving these covers! 6y
Rissreads @CarolynM Love in a cold climate is our new bookclub pick. Is it ok to read this book first and by itself without reading Pursuit of Love? 6y
CarolynM @Rissreads Yes it is, the stories are stand alone. Some characters reoccur so if you've read The Pursuit of Love they make more sense. The Pursuit of Love is the one that is based on the Mitford family and I like it better, I think Love in a Cold Climate is more famous just because it's got a better title (although it's still really good and well worth reading). 6y
Rissreads @CarolynM thanks! 6y

If there isn't a Nancy Mitford cult there should be and I'm founding it right now. I personally hate Wake in Fright but it is an Australian cult novel and I'm including it out of patriotism. Thanks for the tag @Centique #cult 5

I tag anyone who wants to post

Centique Oooh Truman Capote. I‘ve read The Grass Harp but not this one - seen the movie though! And yes all the love for Nancy. 😍 Great choices! 7y
CarolynM @Centique The story is very different from the movie, but I think they're both great in their own ways 7y
