When a murder hits close to home, Frank finds himself in an unusual position--the prime suspect in the latest installment of the national bestselling Gaslight Mystery series... Frank and Sarah Malloy are enjoying married life and looking to make their family official by adopting Catherine, the child Sarah rescued and has been raising as her daughter. The newlyweds soon discover, Parnell Vaughn, an actor and Catherine's legal father, is looking to fatten his pockets by insisting on a financial settlement to relinquish his parental rights. Even though exchanging money for a child is illegal, Frank and Sarah's love for Catherine drives them to take a chance. When Frank returns with the money and finds Vaughn beaten to death, all evidence points to Frank as the culprit. A relatively unsuccessful actor with no money and little promise, Vaughn seems at first to be an unlikely candidate for murder--particularly such a violent crime of passion--but Frank soon uncovers backstage intrigue as dramatic as any that appears on stage. Sarah and Frank must use all of their resources to investigate Vaughn's death as Frank's own life hangs in the balance.

This historical mystery series is set during the turn of the century (19/20th).Midwife Sarah & her detective husband, Frank, are planning on adopting a child Sarah rescued. When Frank went to meet with the legal father, an actor, to get papers signed relinquishing any claim, he found him in his dressing room murdered. An actress accused Frank of the murder. In depth descriptions of life in theatre fascinating.

Sounds like we are all facing heat wave. My sister in Omaha had 110 degree temp today. Tonight we are having salad, parmesan cheese slices, watermelon. We are all living in our living room - only air conditioner we have & I am so grateful that we added another dedicated electrical line for it this spring. #thisoldhouse

21 books in and I still enjoy spending time with Sarah and Frank. This book sets the mystery in New York's original theater district and the suspect is none other than Frank himself! As the Malloys set their sights on clearing Frank's name they run into many difficulties, chief among them is who to believe when all those they question act out stories as a profession. A great cozy series, Thompson always gives a solid book to sink into.

Mehso-so

ARC through First to Read, Penguin Books. My first and last Victoria Thompson. Cozy mysteries. Meh. This book was rather dull and predictable.

Billypar Was just there a few hours ago. Lots of people enjoying the nice weather- no murders to speak of 😸 7y

#TBRtemptation post 4! This is the 21st installment in the Gaslight Mystery series. Sarah and Frank Malloy enjoy married life and looking to adopt a girl, but at the last minute her father makes a claim and his fiancée demands a financial settlement. When they comply and Frank arrives with the money, the father is found beaten to death and he's a prime suspect. The uncovered intrigue will be shocking. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Mehso-so

Period murder mystery centered around murdered NY theatre actor & his suspicious cast mates. Loved some of the characters (particularly Maeve & Gino) but found the middle of the book a bit tedious as the investigators (2 professional & 2 amateur) returned to the same set of suspects time & again with new sets of questions. Took a while to move the plot forward. Foreshadowing gave clues as to the murderer before the big reveal, lessening surprise.
