Tips for Living | Renee Shafransky
On the day Nora discovered that her husband, Hugh, had gotten another woman pregnant, she made a vow: I will come back to life no matter how long it takes...It's taken Nora three years. With the help of her best friend, she fled New York City for a small resort town, snagged a job as the advice columnist for the local paper, and is cautiously letting a new man into her life. But when Hugh and his perfect new family move into a house nearby, Nora backslides. Coping with jealousy, humiliation, and resentment again is as hard as she feared. It's harder still when Hugh and his wife are shot to death in their home.If only Nora could account for the night of the murders. Unfortunately, her memories have gone as dark as her fantasies of revenge. But Nora's not the only one with a reason to kill--and as prime suspect in the crime, she'd better be able to prove it.

Nora was married to Hugh, an artist, for 12 years until he got another woman, Helene, pregnant. Hugh & Nora got divorced & he married Helene. Nora moves to a small resort town & gets a job with a newspaper writing an advice column. Hugh & Helene move nearby Nora & when they are murdered, Nora is the prime suspect in their murders. Nora is not sure if she murdered them as she is a sleepwalker but she is bound and determined to discover the truth.

EadieB This book was very well-written and the characters were very interesting. The plot was unique and there were lots of twists and turns that kept me turning the pages quickly to get to the end to find out who done it. The murderer was a complete surprise and one I didn't suspect. I would be interested in reading another book by this author but she has only written this one. 4y
EadieB I would recommend this book to those who love mysteries that are hard to solve. #TipsForLiving #ReneeShafransky #LMPBC #Round11 #GroupW 4y

So first of all this was more “cozy mystery” than thriller so for that I apologize to my #LMPBC crew.

Overall this was entertaining and had a lot of red herrings so I didn‘t predict who the killer was. Was pretty slow moving though. The only real “suspense” lasted 2 pages at the end. Was still pretty good otherwise though. I hope you guys like it.

Helene Westing, the woman my ex-husband had an affair with and impregnated while we were married, joined my Pilates mat class a few weeks before Thanksgiving.

#FirstLineFridays

Reggie I used to work at this restaurant and we had 2 regulars. A woman in her 60‘s who would eat by herself. And then their was her ex-husband and his new 20 something Brazilian wife with her baby. It was very sad and uncomfortable. Also, the ex-husband had started yoga with his new wife. This quote reminds me of them. I used to think of all the restaurants to come to they choose the same one. I thought I had the killer pegged early on and I was dead wrong (pun intended)! Nora has rebuilt her life after leaving her husband for getting another woman pregnant. She is doing just fine...until her ex-husband‘s new wife joins her Pilates class. Shortly thereafter the ex and his wife wind up dead and guess who the main suspect is? It‘s a race to figure out whodunnit. I enjoyed this fast paced novel despite some terrible decision making. 4⭐️

TerriGreen Ugh I hate bad decisions. Sounds great though! 5y

This book was just okay for me. I found it difficult to get behind the main character. She makes a lot of choices that either made me cringe or roll my eyes. However, the story kept me coming back to see what would happen. I did not figure out who the killer was until the author revealed it, and raced to the finish after that point. I think more could have been done to develop some of the other characters, who were interesting. A low ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.

Reading this one next. My January “Amazon First” pick, 11 months later. 🤷‍♀️

This book will meet my reading goal for 2018 (3 weeks early)! I started working again 2 years ago (after being a SAHM for 17 yrs), and my reading time has suffered. I am excited that I have finally found a work/life balance that includes my love of reading. I have read 11 more books this year than last! 👍🏻 (And I might even get another one in before 2018 closes out!)

Despite reading quite a few harsh, mostly negative, reviews on the plot, the protagonist, and if the book was even worth finishing, I decided to keep reading on and *surprise* I liked it.

I ended up reading this and not listening to any of the audio.

This took me a while to get through, as I sat it down and didn't pick it back up for some time (and I don't know why)

I enjoyed this book. The characters were likeable and I could relate to them. An easy, enjoyable read.

I just finished this one and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Most importantly, I didn‘t figure out who the killer was until the point the author revealed the identity. Too often murder/mystery books are predictable. Not this one! The scenario was believable and the plot twists were great. Give it a read if you have time in your reading schedule. I don‘t think you‘ll be disappointed!

One of my 2018 goals is to take advantage of the books I get in subscriptions. I chose Tips for Living as my January book for being a Amazon Prime Member. I‘ve never taken advantage of this option because if I‘m honest...I don‘t (didn‘t) like ereaders. .
But I‘m starting to see the benefits. Out running errands & forgot my book!
.
Do you prefer books or ereaders?
.
Check out my amazing handmade wind chime my sister made me. It‘s adorable! ♥️☕️

Bklover I like ereaders when I‘m in bed at night when the light‘s off. I can lie on my side and read with no lights and it doesn‘t bother anyone else. Otherwise I like books. Real books. 📖 7y
rubyslippersreads I like both, though my eyes prefer ebooks. 🤓 7y
DivineDiana Definitely books, but there are times when I need a book in a hurry and with the ereader, I can get it right away! 7y

CocoReads I prefer books but I‘ve also grown to love my ereaders for travel and bedtime reading. 7y
Bookladylinda I‘m a book girl but I do love reading on my ereader, they are convenient., 7y
KarynGood I read both! I enjoyed The Paris Wife!!! Hope you do too! 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Books!!! I have a kindle fire, but rarely use it!! 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7y
melyndarae I prefer books but it is easier to read on my kindle in bed lol. But I like the satisfaction of seeing how much of the book is left and turning pages. 7y

This was just a ‘nice‘ book, a bit too basic and predictable in places and in others a little bit irritating. It couldn‘t decide if it wanted to be a thriller or a nice safe ‘Aga saga‘.

BookishMe 'Indecisive' book 😅😅 7y

This book was a ‘meh‘ for me. It said suspense... but at no point was I on the edge of my seat. I wasn‘t impressed with the beautiful artist‘s muse turned beautiful-ish middle-aged yoga-attending sleuth. I didn‘t find the protagonist all that likable. And the sexy romance on the side was dull at best. I‘m not a fan of shallow romance detracting from the intended thriller vibe of the story. Not thrilled. The author has some promise, however.

SandyW And right back at you... I have this on my TBR, but now I'm re-thinking. After all, life is to short to read bad fiction 7y
BlameJennyJane @SandyW so true! So true! Too many books, too little time to squander it on a bad read. 7y

In my opinion, a mystery is only as good as its plot twist. Renee Shafransky's writing style sucked me in, but she also wrote in a lot of unnecessary red herrings that muddled the plot. The "twist" at the end felt anti-climactic, but the book as a whole was still enjoyable.

I haven't read a newer mystery in a long time where I felt the end wasn't disappointing. I felt the same way about Since We Fell, Final Girls, The Girl on the Train, etc. ?

Lucas.Rencher @Rachel.Rencher dang I was hoping that you were going to like it more, at least there is always another book to read! 📚😀 7y
squirrelbrain Ooh I‘m about 70% through this on my Kindle - and so far I‘m finding it all a bit ‘meh‘ too. I shan‘t finish it tomorrow as I have to drive to work rather than catching the train, but hopefully Tuesday.... 7y
Rachel.Rencher @squirrelbrain Let me know what you think! 🤓 7y

BookishMe I am getting irritated with red herrings thrown in for plot twists for the sake of it... Hoping to read a thriller as satisfying as 7y
Rachel.Rencher @BookishMe Ooh, thanks for the recommendation! That's exactly how I feel. I want the mystery to be thought out, not just really convenient for the main character at the end. The killer should have to put some work in. 😂 7y
BookishMe @Rachel.Rencher lol... Swanson's killer certainly did! I suppose Gone Girl certainly raised the bar for plot twists, if you ask me. So far nothing has been as jaw dropping as that 7y
Rachel.Rencher @BookishMe That's what I was just saying to my husband! Gillian Flynn and Agatha Christie set the bar really high 7y
BookishMe Agatha Christie is unparalleled! @Rachel.Rencher 7y
squirrelbrain @Rachel.Rencher - well, I‘ve finished it now and I still think it was just so-so. It‘s the kind of book I would recommend to my MIL, who likes nice, safe ‘books to read on the beach‘. And I agree @BookishMe, the supposed plot twists were annoying me too, it was a bit novel writing 101. 7y

My current reads for the week! The real surprise here is Tips for Living— A woman‘s cheating ex-husband and mistress (now wife) are shot to death in their bed. Did she do it? Typical mystery/thriller storyline, but it‘s surprisingly good. Also the narrator is hilarious and very interesting. I keep reaching for it to see what happens next! ♥️

By the way, Red Clocks is our #botmbuddyread ‘s May selection! If you can wait, join us then! ☺️

You know you're a bookworm the only thing that can keep you entertained at the gym is a book. 😂 I hate wearing earbuds because they fall out, and if I don't do anything then I just end up staring around the room, creeping people out and watching the seconds tick by.

In other news, this book is fabulous so far. I feel like if I were ever in Nora's situation (which I better never be) I'd probably be having similar thoughts as her. 😅
