Overall Rating 3⭐|Narration😀=Good
While I found this both interesting and enlightening, especially the taking down of Weinstein and Co. I still have some mixed feelings about this. Namely, the manner in which this ended, which left me feeling brow-beaten and even preached to. Which when coupled with the beginning, with all the talk about religion and cults and what‘s makes a cult, it felt like that shouldn‘t have been what she was going for?

So I decided to read this book after listening to an interview with Rose McGowan and I guess there‘s controversy over her as a person and I figured I would at least listen to the book to form my own opinion. I found the book to be well thought out it was a good memoir of her life and her traumas in the film industry. I personally did not care for her advertising her make up or music she put into the book. But some of her messages were good. ⬇️

Brave is the perfect title for this memoir. About 2007, at the height of the paparazzi craze, fashion police, etc., I thought this is nuts. Why would a woman want to be an actress if she has to go through this? I think this memoir explains that women didn‘t have a choice and in many cases still don‘t have a choice but to be exploited by the male gaze. Rose talks openly about her experiences in the industry and the price she‘s paid for honesty.

Megabooks I had this conversation with my mom that John Grisham and Elin Hilderbrand are basically the same author. They both write variations on the same theme over and over in popular and inoffensive combinations, but almost all men would never pick up Elin, yet a lot of women read John. Idk. I think there‘s still a lot of truth to the (white) men‘s perspective being the universal one even if there is (sort of) more diversity in publishing. 4y
Cinfhen This has been on my TBR forever!!! 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I think you‘d like it! 4y
CoverToCoverGirl This one was very eye opening for me in some ways but not in others. I always suspected that Hollywood has a very disturbing underbelly. I admire her bravery in stepping forward. Hmmm..oddly enough I‘ve read Grisham but not Hilderbrand. 4y
Megabooks @CoverToCoverGirl I don‘t think it exists was surprising to me but the particulars were sad. Also I hadn‘t (embarrassingly) though how difficult it might be for women to film some of those scenes from an emotional perspective. As far as the authors, it was an interesting conversation that mom and I had. 4y

Such a strong story! I really enjoyed reading this! She has gone through a lot and you can hear it from her language. I feel like she is indeed strong and brave but also suffered a lot. The end part of this book got me thinking if she is really over all she has gone through. I felt like she is still in the process of getting over things. It showed a bit in the form of bitterness but ofcourse she has the right to be bitter.

I've never thought it this way but I can totally recognize the problem. Now that I think of it. I think I have this same congitioning. There have been situations where I've had to contemplate whether to be polite or make my safety the priority and chosen politeness. 🤔

Martta @Milara I know. Kindness is still a really important quality in a person. It's a very fine line... 4y
Kris10H F*ck politeness is a theme in Stay Sexy and Don't Get Murdered. Soooo important to not let the politeness training we've had put us in situations like this. 4y

I‘ve really admired Rose for her strength and not being afraid to speak her truth or stand up for what‘s right. This memoir certainly didn‘t hold any punches. It was emotional, relatable and inspiring. I highlighted so many passages. This is definitely one I will go back to in the future.

My June #BookSpin is complete!

After reading ‘Catch & Kill‘ by Ronan Farrow earlier this year, I knew I wanted to hear directly from one of his sources. Much of this memoir felt like a gut punch - often I‘d feel myself saying internally “so dramatic” or “why‘d didn‘t she walk away”. This type of programming is exactly what she‘s speaking about tho - this is so familiar to women, we almost excuse it and fault her for not knowing better. 💪🏻

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I did the same thing after Catch and Kill..... Brave, and then She Said! All great and complimentary reads! 4y
Melismatic @Riveted_Reader_Melissa thanks! Stacking that! 💪🏻 4y

Honest & unapologetically truthful! Rose is so searingly honest and raw about her childhood in a cult, later homelessness, and abuse, and that‘s before she falls victim to the cult of personality in Hollywood with its silencing tactics and coverups. It‘s truly a Brave story to tell, and I‘m so glad she refound her voice to tell it and the ability to move on to greater things... hopefully this book will help others to do the same.

(Cont. Below)

Riveted_Reader_Melissa (Cont). I can see why it has mixed reviews though, because as she found herself, she openly takes on everyone...from the cult of personality to the images and culture put out by Hollywood. I don‘t know if I would have appreciated it so much at a different time, or if I hadn‘t read things like Catch & Kill or The Beauty Myth or Down Girl first. So much would sound far-fetched a few years ago, but now we know it‘s all too true and pervasive. 5y

⬆️ Exactly....exactly this. Both Cosby and Weinstein (who she carefully never mentions by name in her book((and I can see why after reading Catch and Kill)) ) had a whole system of people who had to be aiding and abetting, for literally decades, to leave behind the path of destruction they did.

For about ten seconds I was gripped with a paralyzing fear. I thought, Oh shit, it‘s happening again. I‘m going to be blacklisted all over again. I could feel myself shaking. But then I realized—

The agency honchos thought they could fire me and it would stay private. Big mistake. They thought I was going to protect them, because like I said, Hollywood works like a Mafia.” ....⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage This part made me think of the murder described in Down Girl, where he killed a bunch of girls because they looked down on him, but yet he didn‘t even really know them...about how he felt entitled to their attention. 5y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Thank you, the name was escaping me at the moment. I already bought it! So it will be soon. Sounds like another excuse to misbehave...and she‘s right, I‘ve never read anything about a female method actor.

JanuarieTimewalker13 True, me neither! 5y
Amandajoy I thought I heard somewhere that Meryl Streep was a method actor, but maybe I‘m wrong? 5y
mcctrish @Amandajoy I thought I read something about Meryl Streep keeping an accent on but .... even if she stayed in character I can‘t imagine her being a dick ( even when the devil wears Prada 🤣) 5y
See All 9 Comments
zezeki I remember Sally Field calling herself a method actor on The Graham Norton show. I think Rami Malek was on that episode, too. 5y
SleepyDragon Hilary Swank was the first to come to mind. There's actually quite a few female method actors, but I don't think they are given a free pass to weird onset antics like male method actors seem to be. https://www.theatlantic.com/notes/2016/08/method/495794/ 5y
Amandajoy @mcctrish that‘s funny, because that‘s where I heard about it. The story I heard was on the set of The Devil Wears Prada she was friendly to Anne Hathaway when they met and then she told her that was the last time she would be friendly to her on the set, or something to that affect. It always cracked me up & I thought it was in an interview with Hathaway where she used the story to praise Streep‘s methods. 5y
Amandajoy @mcctrish I guess to be fair, there‘s a difference between being a method actor and just being a dick. I‘m guessing she was the former. 5y
mcctrish @Amandajoy I guess they are there to work, maybe it‘s easier for some to just get in the zone and stay there. I think that would be emotionally exhausting. But I‘m not an actor so 🤷🏻‍♀️I know nothing 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @mcctrish It‘s interesting and I can see her point. The “bad guy” can just act like a jerk all day on set, saying and doing inappropriate things, because he‘s “in character”. @Amandajoy The first one I thought about was Johnny Depp, I think I first read about him as a method actor in reference to Pirates of the Caribbean, and I remember thinking fun role, but that must have been a real pain for everyone else on set.🤷‍♀️ 5y

Just finished listening to the audiobook. This is between a pick and a so-so for me. Her story is incredible - I don‘t know how she lived through as many horrible things as she did. And her message to stand up and speak out - to take the steps to change Hollywood and the world was nice. There was something about the tone of the book that didn‘t always hit me the right way. It was an interesting listen but that opening song was crazy 😂

I really enjoyed this. There was a great line at the end that I should have written down but basically she said she might not always be right but at least she was honest (desperately hoping I got the gist of that) and I loved it. I don‘t necessarily agree with her 100% of the time but I believe her and I love her confidence and her unwillingness to be put down. I am in no way going to diminish what is obviously a raw and personal tale, and it certainly packs the wallop that those words would bring. I just didn't know how to get to grips with that emotion as a book. Perhaps given the topic that's how it's supposed to be.

I will give Rose McGowan that she is brave for telling her story of abuse, mistreatment and rape. I get her anger. I really don‘t want to talk this book down, but it did feel a bit too much at times, almost a bit arrogant. Like McGowan‘s way is the only way. But everyone deals with trauma in their own way, so I really don‘t feel justified in judging Rose on how she does it. I would just have liked more nuance.

#booksandvinyl it had to be the Julie ruin to pair with this. This is raw and you can feel the rage and urgency to get this out. After reading trainwreck this was the perfect example of someone taking back her narrative after people tried to portray her a certain way and she does that. Rose is someone who will probably make you uncomfortable but she says her intentions are pure. I believe her. Continued

Weaponxgirl Some of what she talks about is obviously her examining why she behaved in certain ways in the past and adding the narrative on top. This isn't a bad thing I think we all do that to our pasts and for the most part she's aware of it. At points she can come across as almost condescending but I don't feel that's her truly feeling that way. She's survived a lot and she therefore puts her points across quite forcefully and this may put some people off 7y
Weaponxgirl Honestly we don't get to see women's righteous rage that's raw like this very often. It can put you on the back foot as we are socialised to be more nurturing and she's not taking that role for anyone anymore. You can feel that she is caring but her defences are up with good reason to be. This ends as a call to arms and she doesn't pull any punches or soften any blows. She's kinda scary in a good way and I think this is a great book to mull over. 7y
Weaponxgirl I'm also not sure I've put my points across clearly and would love to know what others thought about this book? #readingwomenchallenge #readharder #readharder2018 (edited) 7y

Chrissyreadit Would you recommend this book? I was drawn to the cover and am wondering about getting it for my 17yo niece- she just moved in with us after years of abuse from stepmonster- and shaved her head the week before she came. 5y
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit I would be wary of giving it to someone that young who had suffered abuse from parents as I think it could be triggering and whilst I admire rose in a lot of ways she is in this book still obviously working through a lot of rage and trauma from lots that‘s happened to her from many different quarters. That said it‘s been a long time since I‘ve read this one and I‘m just going from what I remember. Sorry going to have another comment 5y
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit I think rage can be great and reading about someone else can be healing so for some this might work but I would deffo want to get something to go alongside this sort of read as it‘s just incredibly raw and I‘d want to offer something that has stuff you could work through alongside. I dunno if I‘m making sense and I can‘t think of anything else to recommend right this second but will have a think. 5y

Just finished this one in time to call it a “March Book”. Look, Ms. McGowan comes off a little unhinged in this book, and some facts, figures, and details seem to not add up or sound contradictory. However, the overall message of thinking for yourself and standing up for marginalized people—being brave—is an important one. Because of that and its high readability, it‘s a pick for me.

I read this in one sitting last night. On one hand, Rose has been through a lot of crap and I definitely feel for her. On the other hand, the whole book comes off as an angry rant with almost nothing positive at all about it. I commend her for speaking out against sexual abuse, and I'm all for women's equality, but it seems that if you don't do things exactly the way she likes, you're doing it wrong. This book made me sad. 2.5⭐️
