White Fire
White Fire | Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child
18 posts | 46 read | 9 to read
Past and present collide in Preston and Child's most thrilling novel ever . . . WHITE FIRE Special Agent Pendergast arrives at an exclusive Colorado ski resort to rescue his protge, Corrie Swanson, from serious trouble with the law. His sudden appearance coincides with the first attack of a murderous arsonist who--with brutal precision--begins burning down multimillion-dollar mansions with the families locked inside. After springing Corrie from jail, Pendergast learns she made a discovery while examining the bones of several miners who were killed 150 years earlier by a rogue grizzly bear. Her finding is so astonishing that it, even more than the arsonist, threatens the resort's very existence. Drawn deeper into the investigation, Pendergast uncovers a mysterious connection between the dead miners and a fabled, long-lost Sherlock Holmes story--one that might just offer the key to the modern day killings as well. Now, with the ski resort snowed in and under savage attack--and Corrie's life suddenly in grave danger--Pendergast must solve the enigma of the past before the town of the present goes up in flames.

I loved this book. It starts out with a rather clandestine meeting between Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle. Wilde tells Conan Doyle about a story that he recently heard about a man eating bear in Roaring Fork, Colorado. Back to this century, Corrie Swanson heads to Colorado to investigate the remains from the bear attacks and ends up in trouble.

Pendergast #13 - It was refreshing, after the Helen trilogy, to return to a Pendergast that felt more like the earlier books and I would rank this one as a favorite. There is arson, cannibalism, a story told to Arthur Conan Doyle by Oscar Wilde, and a Colorado ski village built over an old mining company. Fun times! #SeriesLove2023 #Booked2023 #setinmountainregion

Bookzombie As I started reading this one, I started to feel like the universe is telling me I need to read all of the Sherlock Holmes books/stories. @SerialReader posted recently they are all available on there and I started watching the adaptations with Jeremy Brett a couple of weeks ago on BritBox. 🤔 2y
vivastory I finished vol. 1 of the Holmes stories last year. It was one of my favorite books of the year. 2y
Bookzombie @vivastory I think I may have to pick them up this year. I have read some in the past. 2y

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Sherlock Holmes, Oscar Wilde, cannibalism? You bet! This is one of my favorites of the Pendergast series. And I love that Corrie had such a big role in the story. Audio narration was superb as well.

I hate the subject of cannibalism. This was a good mystery, though, tying in how mercury poisoned madness happened both in the late 1800s and today.

I picked this back up after I don‘t know how long. I needed a break from Pendergast, but now I can‘t remember why. This one had me guessing right up to the end. And it wasn‘t as much horror as mystery, either. I was still on the edge of my seat. There are dug up bones, breaking and entering, arson, cannibalism, attempted murder, and much more. On to the next in the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a page turner! Book #13 of the Agent Pendergast series. This one features Corrie, a minor character from a couple of other books. I enjoy his the authors build up these side characters & really develop them. They aren‘t all in the same books, they gone and go as needed, adding a nice variety & change of pace to the series.

I loved the setting of the story, high in the mountains of Colorado. The isolation and the winter storms add to the tension. Corrie has to deal with an unknown person trying to run her out of town, while an arsonist is targeting the wealthy citizens. Corrie is at times unlikeable, but overall she is trying to do what is right. This story was really interesting. Even the Sherlock Holmes angle worked. I enjoyed reading this.

Twainy I love Pendergast! Corrie & the Sherlock tie-in were a plus. One of my favorite Books in this series was the one where he meets her. 5y

A perfect book for this hot summer. It's set in Roaring Forks, Colorado (a fictional town I think is based on places like Aspen and Vail) in the middle of winter. It revolves around greed, murder, silver mines, and Arthur Conan Doyle. Preston and Child write suspense with a touch of horror. I don't want to say too much and spoil the story.

The used bookstore called to tell me they had a copy of this if I wanted it (yes, please), and I couldn't leave with just one book. Hoping The Reincarnationist trilogy is good! #bookhaul

DGRachel @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I loved The Terror, but bailed on Drood. The blurb on this one looks really interesting, so my I'm hopeful that I'll enjoy it. 🤓 8y
Suet624 What a nice bookstore to give you a call. 8y
DGRachel @Suet624 They have a great database where they track requests, so when they get "new" books, they check their list and call the people who are seeking those books. It's been great for me, as I've now gotten most of the Pendergast series in just a couple of months. 8y

#TBRtemptation post! This is the 13th Special Agent Pendergast installment, & I'm told it can be read stand-alone. Pendergast heads to an exclusive Colorado ski resort to get his protégée, Corrie, out of jail. She made a 150-year-old discovery concerning miners killed by a grizzly. Meanwhile, a murderous arsonist begins burning down mansions with families locked inside. An old Sherlock Holmes story links the 2. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Book 13 of the series. Best yet. Pendergast hunts down a Sherlock Holmes story to figure out what is going on in roaring fork Colorado where Corrie Swanson has been researching old bear attacks
