Telegraph Avenue
Telegraph Avenue | Michael Chabon
As the summer of 2004 draws to a close, Archy Stallings and Nat Jaffe are still hanging in there, long-time friends, bandmates and co-regents of Brokeland Records, a kingdom of used vinyl located in the sketchy yet freewheeling borderlands of Berkeley and Oakland. Archy and his wife, Gwen, are expecting their first baby; Nat and Aviva have a teenaged son, Julius. Cranky, flawed and loving each other with all the fierceness weve come to expect of Chabon characters, Archy and Nat have worked to construct lives and livelihoods that have a groove, looking to connect across barriers of race and class, and clinging to a sense of order and security through their stubbornly old-school ways. When ex-NFL quarterback Gibson Goode, the fourth-richest black man in America, announces plans to construct his latest Dogpile megastore on a nearby neglected stretch of Telegraph Avenue, Nat and Archy fear it means certain doom for their vulnerable little enterprise. What they dont know is that Goodes announcement marks the climax of a decades-old secret history encompassing a forgotten crime of the Black Panther era, the tragedy of Archys own deadbeat fathera long faded Blaxploitation starand the perpetual shining failure of American optimism about race.

Holy wow! Chabon does it for me again. I won‘t say it‘s not problematic with a certain “California Dreaming” permeating the whole, and it was difficult to get the rhythm of, but once gotten this story takes off! Chabon drops cultural references weaving back and forth, side to side, jumping POVs like hobos jump freight cars! If Tarantino does another film he need look no further for a script!

At a reading/talk I attended, Chabon did confirm that this is indeed the same African Grey as in The Final Solution. A fact that makes me inordinately happy. 📚🔎🇬🇧

Still working on this month‘s #bookspin pick, but hope to finish it soon, so I‘m going to participate again for May. Lots of non-fiction — I just seem in the mood for it these days.

My first #bookspin! I'm excited. Odds were high I would get at least one Chabon, but I'm still pleased because #lovesmesomechabon.

Two from this past winter. Separate shops, different days, both a total #thriftSCORE. Chabon is one of my favorite living authors, and I had read library copies of both these, but now I have beautiful hardcover copes as keepers.

#AyUpAugust Another Michael Chabon book 😉This one is on my TBR , the blurb sounds great but I‘ve seen mixed reviews. #AvenuesAndAlleyways 🎶For some reason, I keep humming 10th Avenue Freeze-Out 👂🏼🐛

squirrelbrain I can‘t decide which cover I like the best, but they don‘t look like they are for the same book... very different... 5y

Saw this while at the bookstore tonight and it stopped me in my tracks. Will Staehle‘s covers are just the best. His design/art is so distinctive, always eye-catching, and really photogenic—even with a price sticker slapped across the front.

pdever I bet the book is as good as the cover. I loved 6y

A loving tribute to pop culture but the plot and characters left me rather cold. Not my favourite Chabon novel.

AlaMich There is a new Dollar Tree on my way to work and I keep meaning to stop there. The other DT near my house has not had any interesting books recently. 7y

kyraleseberg @AlaMich I have two that I check regularly and I usually don't walk out with at least 1 book. I think it's time for me to ask them when they get new book shipments so I know the best times to visit ;) 7y
kyraleseberg @Chelsea.Poole Good to know, thanks! I'm looking forward to reading it and it'll be my first Franzen novel. 7y

#TBRtemptation post 1! It's the summer of 2004. Nat & Archy are long-time friends who own Brokeland Records, a vinyl shop by Berkeley and Oakland. Their wives, Aviva & Gwen, are well-known midwives. When a very wealthy entrepreneur decides to open up a megastore across the street, the shop looks vulnerable. And the ladies are in their own professional bind. It's all soul and funk on Telegraph Avenue. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

CoffeeAndABook I've been meaning to read this book for ages!!! It's not too heavy is it? 7y

KathyWheeler I have such a hard time with Michael Chabon. I really want to like him; but so far, it's just not happening for me. Most of his books that I've started, I don't finish. 8y

For my very first Chabon novel I was pleasantly surprised. I think the book veered in a much different direction than I expected. It was very a very thoughtful novel, and Chabon's descriptive writing is exquisite.

I loved Kavalier and Clay so much that I was worried this one would disappoint. It doesn't. Totally different but equally wonderful. Unforgettable characters and gripping story.

Welcome home girl. Found this gem tucked into the copy of a Michael Chabon book I got at the thrift shop yesterday.

Linds Yes! Readers always use strange and excellent things to save their place. I currently have a bamboo chopsticks wrapper saving my place near the end of A Little Life :) 8y
