Patriarch: A Bruno, Chief of Police Novel
Patriarch: A Bruno, Chief of Police Novel | Martin Walker
9 posts | 13 read | 4 to read
A beloved village, a renowned family, a suspicious death--it's the latest adventure in the Dordogne for police chief Bruno. When Bruno is invited to the lavish birthday celebration of World War II flying ace and national icon Marco "the Patriarch" Desaix, it's the fulfillment of a boyhood dream. But when the party ends in the death of Gilbert, Marco's longtime friend, it's another day on the job for the chef de police. All signs point to a tragic accident, but Bruno isn't so sure. There is more to the Desaix family's lives and loyalties than meets the eye. There is Victor, the Patriarch's son, Gilbert's old comrade-in-arms and sometime rival; Victor's seductive wife, Madeleine, whose roving eye intrigues Bruno even more than her fierce political ambitions; Yevgeny, another son, an artist whose paintings seem to hold keys to the past; and the Patriarch himself, whose postwar Soviet ties may have intersected all too closely with Gilbert's career in Cold War intelligence. Bruno is diverted by a dangerous conflict between a local animal rights activist and outraged hunters--as well as meals to cook, wine to share, and an ever more complicated romantic situation. But as his entanglement with the Desaix family grows and his suspicions heighten, Bruno's inquiries into Gilbert's life become a deadly threat to his own.

Mehso-so

I cannot pinpoint why this was a so-so for me. I have really enjoyed the books in this series prior to this one. Bruno is quite human in this one- deceived by appearances or hormones as he says; some jealousy over Pamela. The same good food & wine- the plot did not draw me in. Read 2 hours yesterday Maybe just my mood? #AwesomeApril #readathon

Crazeedi Yes, some of them better than others, but if I remember this one gets better 4y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y
Kimzey I have been enjoying reading through the series and I agree this isn‘t one of the better ones. 3y

Pickpick

4.5⭐ I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys watching character develop book after book. Bruno is a police chief in a small village in France. His hero of the war may be not what he seems. The story has a little of everything, love, food, wine, friendship, mystery. Recommend @TheSpineView #SeriesRead

Addison_Reads You keep intriguing me each time you post about this series. 😁 I'll have to look for the first one the next time I'm book shopping. 5y

I pouted about having to read the 10th book in a series (that I've not read before) for virtual foodie book club but I did end up enjoying French Police Chief Bruno & his love of good food & I would go back & try the first book. My copy went back to the library before I made my book-inspired dish to pose it with but Ina's Salmon Nicoise Platter is so good & so pretty on the plate, I had to show it off. 😋🍽 Review & recipe are on the blog-link👇🏻

Today's dinner $ #soupersundays blog post is my recipe for Three Bean Vegetarian Chili with Homemade Soy Chorizo Crumbles. The chili is vegan-the cheese & yogurt cheese on top not so much.😆But it tastes smoky & meaty & is one of the best chilis I've ever made. I love when experiments turn out. Although I did some #audiosouping to make it, I'm trying to get through the second half of this book before it goes back to the library.🍲📚Recipe link👇🏻

brilliantglow That looks so tasty! And is perfect for the snowy/rainy weather we've been getting the last couple of days. Thanks for sharing 7y

Breakfast with a food wind, errands are run, SBUX busted, a few chores are done & I'm finally ready to settle in & try to take a chunk out of this book for virtual foodie bookclub--but first a Tim Tam Slam may have just happened with my Caramel Macchiato for an afternoon treat. (And now I am wearing part of my drink on my shirt--I think I've lost my form!) ☕️🍪🍫😋

#TuneIntoNovember #YouKnowImNoGood You know I'm no good at getting my book club picks read early & now I must read this book this weekend as it goes back to the library Tuesday & there's a hold on it-so no renewals.🙁I'm only 20 pages in from last week.😬I think my main problem is that I'm angry at it for being 8th in a series I've not read & you know I'm no good at reading series books out of order. Max has no sympathy-he's napping😸#catsoflitsy

Booksnchill Oh- I love Bruno- I would certainly be angry if I read 8 before the first 7 so I agree- it is an awesome series though! 7y
DebinHawaii @Booksnchill Yeah, I didn't realize when one of my co-hosts picked it (because the detective is apparently a foodie) for my virtual foodie book club that she wasn't picking the first book in a series which in my mind, you would naturally do.🤔Glad to hear you like the books at least. 7y
literacassandrature I'm the same. I don't like reading a book in a series unless I've read all the previous books. 7y
DebinHawaii @literacassandrature Yes! It drives me crazy but it's bookclub so I have to get over it. 😬📚 7y

Tonight's low-effort dinner is a quickly assembled poke bowl with jasmine rice, store-bought ahi poke, sliced cucumber, garlic-pepper fried onions & Sriracha-garlic aioli that I was too lazy to put in the squeeze bottle & drizzle. There should be something green there besides cucumbers-but I didn't feel like turning on the stove to sauté spinach.??Yum! Trying to start this book for my virtual foodie bookclub-it's due at the end of this month.?

Tamra Looks delicious to me! 7y

DebinHawaii @Tamra @emilyhaldi It was good! 😋🍽 @Ruri_kaichou Oh I had no problem eating it! 😆Just feel like I needed more green in my day. 🥗 @Cinfhen It was--all I did was throw rice in the rice cooker when I walked in the door & put everything in a bowl. 👍😆 7y
LeahBergen I hope you licked the sauce off of some of that ahi poke for Max! 😆 7y
TricksyTails *DROOOOOOL* Looks onolicious! 😋 7y
