Death of an Honest Man
Death of an Honest Man | M C Beaton
14 posts | 16 read | 5 to read
Sergeant Hamish Macbeth--Scotland's most quick-witted but unambitious policeman--returns in M.C. Beaton's new mystery in her New York Times bestselling series. DEATH OF AN HONEST MANNobody loves an honest man, or that was what police sergeant Hamish Macbeth tried to tell newcomer Paul English. Paul had moved to a house in Cnothan, a sour village on Hamish's beat. He attended church in Lochdubh. He told the minister, Mr. Wellington, that his sermons were boring. He told tweedy Mrs. Wellington that she was too fat and in these days of increasing obesity it was her duty to show a good example. Angela Brody was told her detective stories were pap for the masses and it was time she wrote literature instead. He accused Hamish of having dyed his fiery red hair. He told Jessie Currie--who repeated all the last words of her twin sister--that she needed psychiatric help. "I speak as I find," he bragged. Voices saying, "I could kill that man," could be heard from Lochdubh to Cnothan. And someone did. Now Hamish is faced with a bewildering array of suspects. And he's lost the services of his clumsy policeman, Charlie, who has resigned from the force after Chief Inspector Blair berated Charlie one too many times, and the policeman threw Blair into the loch. Can Hamish find the killer on his own?

This is the last book solely written by M C Beaton in the Hamish MacBeth Series. Another very good read, but tinged with sadness for me. As always the murder is almost incidental to what is happening in Hamish‘s life. In this one Blair loses the plot and puts them all at risk. Changes are ahead in Hamish‘s life. #SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView

Moving onto book 33 in the Hamish MacBeth series. Needing to do this one as an audiobook as have not been able to get hold of a copy of the book, but the library had this as an audiobook. Sadly the last one written totally by M C Beaton before she died. #SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView

Clwojick Is Bolinda your library‘s app? I haven‘t heard of it before. Just tried to Google it, but it was hard to tell if it‘s for everyone, or just specific areas. 2y
Andrew65 @Clwojick It looks like the company that is behind BorrowBox who some libraries in the U.K. use for E-books and audiobooks.

I know many on your side of the Atlantic mention Hoopla but as far as I am aware that doesn‘t exist in the U.K.

Clwojick Ahhh. We have a handful of different library ones. My library used to use Hoopla and Libby, but went to CloudLibrary a few years back. 2y

TheSpineView Well done!📚📚📚 2y
Andrew65 @Clwojick A few libraries went with Cloud Library but those that I knew used it have changed or are changing providers. Most here seem to be using Libby or BorrowBox. 2y
Andrew65 @TheSpineView Thanks, determined to get this series finished off. 2y
TheSpineView @Andrew65 I admire your dedication! 2y

Staycation this week so I‘ve been spending a lot of time listening and reading on Libby. This mystery is in the middle of the series so there‘s a bit of catch-up. I did watch some of the tv series so I knew the basics. It also had some super natural elements that seemed out of place. I did like the voice actor reading the story.

Fantastic story line in this one!
How amazing that a different wild cat still saved Hamish and Freddie!
I'm so glad Hamish and Lugs finally got the real Sonsie back though! 😍 And quite a sweet ending for Hamish getting himself a pretty policewoman working for him! ☺

I can't wait for the next Hamish Macbeth Murder Mystery to be released! Death of a love, I'm waiting! 🥰

Listened to the audiobook which is wonderful. I can‘t recommend the narrator: Graeme Malcolm highly enough. A mystery, set largely in Cnothan. (Scotland) it features Hamish Macbeth and a wonderful cast of characters including not one, but two wild cats. Nit really cozy, but if you like those, you‘ll enjoy this.

Swore off Hamish MacBeth after #32, yet here I am with Hamish under the hair dryer at the salon. I WISH Marion/M.C. would stop trying to be modern; it‘s so awkward! #mystery #scotland

Aimeesue You're looking pretty fierce here, Mags. Marian's just gotta do what Marian's gotta do. Which is write more Hamish, apparently. 😂 6y
jillrhudy Is it her children or the publisher holding a gun to this author‘s head? I can‘t finish it. Priscilla says, I was afraid you wouldn‘t be faithful which was a daft misandrist assumption. Hamish says, I was afraid you wouldn‘t put out, which was a daft misogynist assumption. She falls into his arms and they live happily ever after. They‘re what, 55? (edited) 6y
jillrhudy Marian needs to END IT. 6y

I still love this series, but I do wish Hamish would finally pick a woman.

jillrhudy Why doesn‘t he? Beaton will drop dead before he does. 6y
Preciouz29 @jillrhudy oh I know! Hamish needs to grow a bit! 6y

I adore Hamish, and this recent addition to the mystery series did not disappoint! Crazy villagers, police sidekicks with other interests, along with Hamish‘s lady troubles abound. I love how these books are quick reads, and this was the perfect book for me to read today. Love it and love the remoteness of Lochdubh. Maybe some day I‘ll get to the Scottish Highlands...

My end of the week at work was not good, so I told myself if I survived by Friday, I would treat myself to the new Hamish, jumping over all the other books started. The next person on the hold list at the library will be thrilled!

LoveToReadLiveToRead I‘ve been meaning to pick up the first in this series for ages but haven‘t yet. Enjoy! 7y
Librarybelle Thanks, @LoveToReadLiveToRead ! I love the series! M.C. Beaton is one of my favorite authors, because her books are so easy to read, very quick, and highly entertaining. 7y
LoveToReadLiveToRead I‘m sure they‘re probably quite different but I always enjoyed the TV series of Hamish Macbeth when I was a kid. I‘ll have to make sure I get this soon x 7y
