"TheShop...bought up QualityCity's unused space dock...and transformed it into an offline shopping center. An insanely hip idea. It's like a virtual shopping center, except that you're really inside it, in real life. And once you've chosen a product, the delivery time is a sensational zero seconds." I have no words ??? #SciFiSummer

julesG 🤣 It's just as good in English as it is in the German original version. 2y

This is a great satire of our relationship with technology, social media, etc. I would say that its primary target are algorithms that, one way or another, encode and, often, reinforce pre-existing prejudices. All the while, it manages to be pretty funny. John of Us for President!

This sums it up very well! Whether you share every detail of your life to all corners of the internet or whether you have no social media accounts at all—or are somewhere in the middle—this book will take you on a fascinating tour through a very probable near future. Quite literally: there are travel guides interspersed throughout. Along the way it will challenge you to rethink our changing society and your role in it.

So far the dust jacket description is spot-on: a “glimpse at a near future we may be hurtling toward faster than it‘s at all comfortable to admit.” The most realistic fictitious dystopia I‘ve read about maybe ever.

It is definitely an alright book. Has some dystopia factors to it, but most of them aren‘t just something new (but the way materialism is dealt with in Qualityland is actually pretty interesting). The story itself is not really intriguing, but again quite alright.

On my day off and stumbled upon this book at Barnes and Noble and am instantly hooked. It‘s a satire of the future in the style of Vonnegut, Adams and Orwell. Funny and scary at the same time because we might be headed in this direction. But either way give this a read if it sounds a little intriguing to you.

Although I‘m spending less on books this year, I just had to order this after it was recommended by @Liberty on the #AllTheBooks podcast. #bookmail

Dystopian Humour & mosaic crochet - not exactly a match made in heaven (enjoy the first and have come to loathe the latter) but the result is pretty. Still have a couple of hours to go on the audio but it‘s not bad so far. Not as laugh out loud funny and weird as the Kangaroo Chronicles and the satire seems more predictable.

A "comic dystopia" set in a near-future in which all our needs and desires are satisfied by algorithms -- and if you happen to disagree with the algorithms, then it's you who are wrong. Case in point: Peter Jobless and his quixotic quest to return the sex toy that he no, really, doesn't want, honest, and shouldn't he know? (No. Not when the algorithm has decided he does.) Funny and frightening, and speaks to some of my own paranoid worries.

rretzler Sounds like something I would enjoy (edited) 6y
swynn I think you would! I'm hoping for an English translation soon so I can push it on friends. 6y

Kiki sits at the counter of an open cafeteria and watches a man who repeatedly beats his head against the wall. For some reason not clear to Kiki the crazy man suddenly stops and comes into the cafeteria as if nothing had happened. He orders a green smoothie and sits at the stool next to her.

"What was that about?" asks Kiki.

"You mean, why was I beating my head against the wall?"

"No," says Kiki. "That impulse I understand. Why did you stop?"

Dear Marc-Uwe Kling,

You made me laugh before the g*****n title page. I am yours to lose.

swynn This book does not connect to the Internet. But you can leave comments in it. These will very probably be read by nobody. You may share this book. But not with all your friends at once. If you share the book there is naturally a chance that someone will read your comments. Perhaps someone will even comment on your comments.

6y
swynn To change the contents of the book the publisher would have to hire people to break into your home at night, sneak up to your bookcase, and strike through things with a felt-tip pen or elaborate on things with a ball-point pen. This is possible but unlikely. 6y
Aimeesue 😂😂😂That‘s excellent! 6y

rretzler I either need to hope for a translation or start brushing up my German - or convince my older son to read it to me! Sounds great! 6y
swynn @rretzler There's a good chance of an English translation, though I don't think one is available yet. I have, though, seen stories that Mike Judge may be developing an English-language adaptation for HBO. 6y
rretzler I‘ll be on the lookout for both. 6y

I just wanted to go to the post office to collect my Amazon order, when I came by a bookstore that had a sale. Needless to say I came home with ten new books instead of the three I ordered. 😇#MountTBR #bookhaul #booksarejustjumpinginmyshoppingcartagainstmywill

This was a very thought provoking book about a future that‘s completely digitized and where people are categorized into levels that determine how they can/have to lead their lives. I liked the political and cultural criticism and enjoyed the humorous passages. The novel did have its lengths though and easily could have been 100 pages shorter. I‘m glad I didn‘t buy it but got it from the library instead.

Heideschrampf Are you familiar with the kangaroo? ?( 7y

One of my favorite German cabarettist just released his new book, a dystopian novel. While funny, this was also very horrifyingly close to our society today. For example, 'TheShop' know what you want and sends it to you without any ordering. News and ads are personified and you only hear what you want to hear. There is a whole alternative facts section in any newspaper company and so on. I did not expect something this thought-provoking. Great!

monkeygirlsmama Sounds interesting. Maybe if I can find it in English I‘ll read it one of these days. 🙂 7y
Maike Well that was fast 😄 but seems like it's worth picking up 7y
