Strange Magic
Strange Magic: An Essex Witch Museum Mystery | Syd Moore
13 posts | 20 read | 17 to read
Rosie Strange doesn't believe in ghosts or witches or magic. No, not at all. Its no surprise therefore when she inherits the ramshackle Essex Witch Museum, her first thought is to take the money and run. Still, the museum exerts a curious pull over Rosie. Theres the eccentric academic who bustles in to demand she help in a hunt for old bones, those of the notorious Ursula Cadence, a witch long since put to death. And theres curator Sam Stone, a man about whom Rosie cant decide if hes tiresomely annoying or extremely captivating. It all adds up to looking like her plans to sell the museum might need to be delayed, just for a while. Finding herself and Sam embroiled in a most peculiar centuries-old mystery, Rosie is quickly expelled from her comfort zone, where to her horror, the secrets of the past come with their own real, and all too present, danger as a strange magic threatens to envelope them all.

#Two4Tuesday

1. I don‘t know if I can pick a favorite, but this year we had a blast at the museum in Gateway Arch National Park.
2. I love this series, and I wish The Essex Witch Museum was a real museum I could visit. I have 2 books left to finish the series, hopefully this year!

Thanks for asking @TheSpineView !

When you don‘t know what to read next and place a slew of holds. Luckily they‘ll all be short reads if they all come in together.

Mehso-so

The plot itself was interesting & I would have probably enjoyed reading it, if not for the fact that I hated the main female character.

Between the frankly horrible comments about other women, & some kind of weird over the top pride about being a benefit fraud investigator, Rosie Strange is loathsome. Plus there‘s no chemistry between Rosie & Sam making the romance feel forced.

Rating: 3 ⭐️

Nothing ground breaking, but this was a fun witchy story perfect for October. I‘m interested enough to want to read the next installment.

This book was really fun. Magical and witchy. A great book to get you in the mood for fall! There were more than a few grammar errors that I noticed and kind of took me out of the story, but I was sucked in. I would look up and would have read 30 pages without realizing it! I will probably continue this series.

4/5 I enjoyed this one by the author of The Drowning Pool (reviewed previously). I love all the witchy history in it & the fast pace makes it a perfect summer read. I've got to be honest though and say I found the love story somewhat irritating but on the whole a fun read. There needs to be an option between pick & so-so, for me this isn't quite a pick!

Made it 100 pages in before I decided that the appeal of the mystery here and historical detail of the witches of Essex wasn't enough to overcome clunky characters and distracting detail. Loved the potential of kick-ass, take-no-nonsense female protag, but she didn't live up to expectations. A problematic "spectrum" insult was the last straw for me.

#Bookmail! The first installment of what is described as a witty new feminist fiction series inspired by the true story of Essex healer Ursula Kemp.
