The Great Frustration
The Great Frustration: Stories | Seth Fried
12 posts
Channeling Steven Millhauser by way of George Saunders, The Great Frustration is a sparkling debut, equal parts fable and wry satire. Seth Fried balances the darka town besieged, a yearly massacre, the harem of a pathological kingwith moments of sweet optimismresearchers unexpectedly inspired by discovery, the triumph of a doomed monkey, the big implications found in a series of tiny creatures. In Loeka Discovered, a buzz flows throughout a lab when scientists unearth a perfectly preserved prehistoric man who suggests to them the hopefulness of life, but the more they learn, the more the realities of ancient survival invade their buoyant projections. Frost Mountain Picnic Massacre meditates on why an entire town enthusiastically rushes out to the annual picnic that ends, year after year, in a massacre of astonishing creativity and casualty. The title story illuminates the desires and even the violence that surges beneath the tenuous peace among the animals in the Garden of Eden. Frieds stories suggest that we are at our most compelling and human when wrestling with the most frustrating aspects of both the world around us and of our very own naturesand in the process shows why he is a talent to be watched.

I would like to say again that I am sooooooper frustrated by the way the latest iPhone update has almost RUINED Litsy for me. It is nearly impossible for me to use the app and I‘m forced to rely on my laptop so much more. No more scrolling... no more easy posts while I wait during doctor‘s appointments or sports practice... It has significantly reduced the number of comments and posts I can make. Grrrrr!!! Ok, I‘m done. Thanks for letting me vent!

MelissaSue81 What issues are you having specifically? I can still use it, but I find it annoying how easily the tags are triggered. Is there something else too? 5y
Prairiegirl_reading I totally agree!!! 5y
Graywacke Very frustrating. Haven‘t Heard anything from developers. Maybe I missed. Tagging @TimSpalding Wish I could tag apple... 5y

LibrarianRyan I get it. It works better for me on my iPad. And while both are on Verizon cell service, my iPad works better in farm country. 5y
Amandajoy I thought this was only a problem I was having, it‘s super annoying. 5y
Bklover It is very annoying!!!!! 5y
Freespirit It's very sensitive to touch now...painful! 5y

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day.

I can‘t listen to audiobooks while packing 😩😑! I have to concentrate too much on the things and process 🙈. Grrrr....! ☹️

Here it is: Do you listen to audiobooks, and which activities can you be doing and actually be able to listen and enjoy the book???

#BookTalk #MrBookWantsToKnow

chuckstar158 I‘m a big audiobook listener. I mostly do it while I‘m driving or sitting at kid activities or cleaning. I really enjoy it while I‘m sewing. 6y
MidnightBookGirl I listen to audiobooks quite a lot, and as long as I don't have to read anything, I'm good. So household chores, getting ready in the morning, walking, etc. But I've been listening to audiobooks since I was a kid. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan I listen to audiobooks while cleaning/folding laundry. 6y
See All 33 Comments
AmyG I listen to them while cleaning and on my walks. If I do listen to a book when I need to concentrate...I wind up listening to the part again. (edited) 6y
gibblr I love audios! Sometimes I can do it while walking (but other times need music as motivation). Driving, chores, sitting by the pool, shopping, traveling, eating, used to listen while coloring, etc. I understand what you‘re saying though. 6y
Susanita Laundry, vacuuming, walking, playing with the cat. 6y
JohannaRose I love listening to audiobooks but I agree it depends on what you‘re doing! Sometimes my eyes need a break so I listen and color lol also driving to and from work and while I‘m getting ready or folding laundry or cleaning. Or even just sitting outside playing with my dogs 🐕 ☺️ 6y
cobwebmoth I can listen while crocheting or coloring, but that's about it. I get distracted too easily by the things around me. 6y
Crystalblu Pulling weeds and processing periodicals 😜 6y
blondie I can't seem to focus on audiobooks even when I'm not doing anything. :( I want to try one again sometime though. 6y
Avanders Oh no — I hate it when I can‘t concentrate on an audiobook! I listen and drive; I can also clean and wrap and just lie down while listening, but not write. I haven‘t tried packing! 6y
Prairiegirl_reading Driving, cleaning, gardening and walking. However if I‘ve had a particularly stressful day then I can‘t concentrate while driving. 6y
Birdsong28 I listen to them mainly when walking as I need to concentrate on them. 📚📖 6y
BookwormAHN I prefer to listen to them in the bath. 6y
squirrelbrain I tried an audiobook for the first time recently (whilst driving) and I really struggled with it. I may try again though sometime..... 6y
WanderingBookaneer I can do chores, but I can‘t do anything where I have to be reading instructions. 6y
Shvonne I thought I would like audiobooks since I‘m an avid podcast listener but I don‘t. 6y
LauraJ While doing mindless tasks works best for me. So, when do we get to see the new place? 6y
Emilymdxn I normally listen while walking or sitting on a train, housework and general errands like food shopping. I occasionally listen at work if I‘m doing something like laminating things or sorting papers, as I find it focuses my mind when I‘m doing something that could get monotonous, but I couldn‘t listen during 99% of work tasks 6y
Lizpixie I‘m a huge audiobook lover, Audible member for ten years. I listen while doing chores(as much as I can do)in the shower(waterproof speakers are awesome)& in bed. I also live audio puzzling, audio colouring & audio crafting of any kind.🎧🎨🧶🧩✂️🖍😴 6y
kspenmoll I listen in the car, while doing dishes, making a meal. 6y
Bookish.SAM I always listen to audio books while driving and cleaning the house. Struggled with listening and puzzling but it may have been that specific book that I couldn‘t get into. And I like audiobooks for a good walk, but not while walking the 🐶 for some reason. I guess it feels like we aren‘t having ‘quality‘ time if I‘m ignoring her for a book... not that I mind ignoring her while reading a print book though. It‘s weird 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
TheSpineView I love audio books and have been enjoying them for a couple of years now. I audio clean, cook, puzzle, color, paint. Also on trips when not driving and anytime I fly. 6y
GloVerdino I listen on the treadmill and in the car 6y
Tex2Flo I can‘t get into audio books. I always feel like I either missing out on podcast time (true crime calls) or cheating on the 9 feet of TBR waiting for me. 6y
SW-T I don‘t listen often, but when I do it‘s when I‘m walking, on the treadmill, or driving. 6y
JacqMac I rarely listen to audiobooks. Only when I‘m walking outside or in the shower. I find I‘m very easily distracted when listening to audiobooks. Sometimes when I‘m cooking, but I end up rewinding a lot. 6y
JacqMac PS. I love me some James Dean. 6y
slothandtabby I have a long commute in the car, which works well for audiobooks—but I find that I can only concentrate on nonfiction in audio form. I think I‘ve attempted fiction audiobooks three times, and it‘s never worked...so nonfiction it is. (edited) 6y
Reagan I've enjoyed audiobooks occasionally, I like when celebrities read their memoirs. Steve Martin is good, and Bryan Cranston. I can listen while cooking.
6y
Megabooks Cooking, cleaning, driving, doing laundry. When I lived alone, I listened constantly! 6y
BooknerdsLife Its hard for me to concentrate on audio books while driving unless it‘s a book I‘ve read already. But I enjoy audio books occasionally when Im doing the dishes or cooking for dinner, or even colouring 6y
MrBook @JacqMac There wasn‘t a minute he wasn‘t in it. 😎 6y

Complaining. Moving is stressful. Moving pets is stressful. Moving countries with pets, especially when one of those counties is India is a level of stress unlike almost all other stressors. India is a high risk rabies country (most rabies deaths in the world estimated at 20,800- P/A) so pets need a tieter test to prove they‘ve been vaccinated before you can even book their place in the compulsory government quarantine. Today, we ⬇️ #catsoflitsy

GlassAsDiamonds Took our two way down south to our vet for said blood test because all of our moving dates swing around when they can leave. Get there only to be told that there‘s only one authorised lab in Mumbai and it‘s run out of the rabies tieter test kits. 😡 The nearest approved labs that might have the kits are Bangalore or Chennai but we can‘t get the blood to them because there‘s a national strike including transport workers. 😱🤦🏻‍♀️😡😭 Not Happy 😡 6y
Tamra Oh, that is difficult! 😢 6y
Tamra It‘s really a shame that other proof of vaccination isn‘t sufficient. 6y

DieAReader

I am new to LibraryThing (couple weeks or so) & find it very difficult to navigate & do what I want. I am so glad I have not abandoned my Goodreads cause I would be lost without it. I am so frustrated and am wondering if it‘s just me being too dumb lol or if it‘s their site/app that are just not user friendly.

BookNAround They are very different and I think most people use them differently as well. For instance, I use Litsy for the community and the people rather than for tracking my reads. Everything depends on why and how you would like to use the app as I suspect there are as many ways to use it as there are users. 6y
CoverToCoverGirl I know nothing about The Library Thing, haven‘t even investigated it. I only use Goodreads and Litsy.. mostly Litsy! 😊 It‘s too bad that you‘re finding it difficult to use. (edited) 6y

My second year of the Short Story Advent Calendar and we begin with this gem from Seth Fried about a husband and wife- she had been a sea monster and he had been a sardine and they are in the quiet love of true soul mates.👍💖

1.I have a 3 day weekend and I‘m super excited! I‘m going to a wine festival, dinner and a movie, spending time with the hubby and family Sunday dinner.
2.Very frustrating week at work. The resident that‘s been on has not been putting any orders in in a timely fashion which frustrates the parents and patients as well as myself! 😡#nurselife

Roughly 8 of the last 10 books I've read aren't in Litsy's catalog. Does the suggest function even work? It's really hard to like an app that constantly frustrates and disappoints. Sigh #litsyproblems #whererthebooks

Swe_Eva Well, the good news is that once LibraryThing‘s catalogue has been fully incorporated, I‘d say all 10 of those will appear. The bad news is, I don‘t know the timeline for the incorporation and how much wonkiness it will cause before it‘s done. 7y
Librarian199509 @Swe_Eva yeah i joined because of the LT buy (heard about litsy from LT press release). I'm just really impatient and read a lot of small print/niche stuff. 7y
Swe_Eva @Librarian199509 Gotcha - me too! Well, let‘s keep our fingers crossed that Tim & Co gets this done. Tim did say it was the main thing that bugged him about Litsy, so I can only assume it‘s at the top of the to-do list. 🤞🏻 7y

I was busy the last two days and could not read a single page and now I can't read anything! 😭 I don't want to fall into a reading slump but I can't seem to be able to focus on anything😢😢

BeckyK You‘ve read so much recently, maybe watch some mindless TV or read a lazy chick lit book 😊 don‘t add pressure to read or you won‘t enjoy it, your brain must have had enough 😊❤️📚 7y
swatreads @Beckykearns Yeah Becky.. I think I should take a break and do as you suggest! My brain really needs to chill 😑 Thank you so much😘 7y

✨I really appreciate all the hard work the LT team has been putting in to get the systems right and what not, but today was the day I was gonna get accustom to #LibraryThing and start cataloging and this is all I see. 😭
✨I know it's frustrating for us Littens, so I can't even imagine how frustrating it must be for them! So, I'll be patient and finish catching up on my piling TBR. 📚

JacqMac Agreed. They haven‘t had a very good weekend. 7y
SqueakyChu LibraryThing has been down a long time...for them. I have complete faith they will do a great job getting their server up and running. When it comes up, take some time to explore it well. It is HUGE! Enjoy your time there! 7y
