Rituals: The Cainsville Series | Kelley Armstrong
44 posts | 34 read | 14 to read
The fifth book and the exciting conclusion to bestselling author Kelley Armstrong's "impossible-to-put-down" Cainsville series, in which she mixes hard-hitting crime writing with phenomenal world-building to create a brand of fiction all her own. When Olivia Taylor-Jones found out she was not actually the adopted child of a privileged Chicago family but of a notorious pair of convicted serial killers, her life exploded. Running from the fall-out, she found a refuge in the secluded but oddly welcoming town of Cainsville, Illinois, but she couldn't resist trying to dig out the truth about her birth parents' crimes. She began working with Gabriel Walsh, a fiendishly successful criminal lawyer who also had links to the town; their investigation soon revealed Celtic mysteries at work in Cainsville, and also entangled Olivia in a tense love triangle with the calculating Gabriel and her charming biker boyfriend, Ricky. Worse, troubling visions revealed to Olivia that the three of them were reenacting an ancient drama pitting the elders of Cainsville against the mysterious Huntsmen with Olivia as the prize. In the series' fifth and final novel, not only does Gabriel's drug addict mother, who he thought was dead, make a surprise reappearance, but Kelley Armstrong delivers a final scary and surprising knock-out twist. It turns out a third supernatural force has been at work all along, a dark and malevolent entity that has had its eye on Olivia since she was a baby and wants to win at any cost.

This is the last of this series, although there are 3 novellas that I would like to read but can't find. I enjoyed this series.#SeriesLove24 @Andrew65 I found one more spot on #ISpyBingoMay @Clwojick @TheAromaofBooks with great liberty. 😀 By my Libby app, this book has 581 pages, so I consider it almost a chunkster. #ChunskterChallenge2023 @Amiable

Clwojick ❤️❤️❤️ great choice! I‘ve read and enjoyed a few of her books, but this isn‘t one of them. I have Omens on my shelf, which i think is in the same series, so I‘m excited to hear your thoughts. 2y

My May Reads 🥰 I tried to start some new fantasy series this month but my brain was way too fried from work so I opted for romantic fluff where everything always ends in a HEA ❤️

40 books read, ~404 pages a day, 12,547 pages total, 24 rereads

I enjoyed this series, not my favorite from Kelley Armstrong but I loved the characters. She has written some of my all time favorite book boyfriends 😍

Dragon Just looked and there are a lot of books by this author, which one is the best to start with? 💚🐉 3y
JuliaTheBookNerd @Dragon depends on the genre you like best. I love her Rockton series (middle of nowhere, detective series). Darkest Powers trilogy, is an all time favorite (YA werewolf, witch, necromancer story running from big bad corporation) Then there is the otherworld series that is the adult world version of the darkest powers. All super fun with fantastic characters. 3y
Dragon Thanks @JuliaTheBookNerd I like all those genres - so lots to try 💚🐉 3y
Bookzombie I didn‘t know that their was a YA version of the Otherworld series. I have read all of it except maybe a few short stories. Thanks! 3y

I did it, I did it! I finally finished this series... Now leaving Cainsville 😔
Not my favourite books ever, but I will miss the world.

SW-T Her world building is great! 😊 I got hooked with 5y
ShyBookOwl @SW-T it is! I actually prefer the Cainsville books. The Rockton books are pretty good too but there's nothing supernatural in them 5y
SW-T I don‘t think her Nadia Stafford stuff was supernatural either. Been a while since I read them. She‘s got range and does a lot of different things! Some are definitely stronger than others, but I‘m always willing to try it if her name‘s attached. 5y
ShyBookOwl @SW-T me too! I like her thrillers best, I think. The Masked Truth and Wherever She Goes were both pretty gripping. 5y

Down to the last 20 pages of this series finale! Needed popcorn. I'm not one to stick with many series, so this is a monumental moment.

Nute Yay, popcorn.🍿 One of my favorite snack foods! 5y
TheHeartlandBookFairy Popcorn... Air popped with a little bit of butter and fresh parmesan grated over it! One of my all-time favorite snacks ☺️ Oair it with a glass of wine and a good book and I am one happy girl 🍷🍿📖 Enjoy! 😁 5y

What books are you carrying into 2020??

Mine are Northanger Abbey and Rituals, both of which I'm about halfway through. My final book of the year turned out to be The Lost for Words Bookshop, which I loved.

Scochrane26 Think I‘m going to be starting new tomorrow with The Vanished Bride. 5y
ShyBookOwl @Scochrane26 oh nice! I was hoping to start fresh too but I never slowed my book pace so I got trapped halfway through 2 lol 5y
Beatlefan129 I was really hoping to finish it, but I only made it about 80% of the way through, so this chunkster is heading into 2020 with me: 5y

Finally starting the last book of the Cainsville series. I really hope I enjoy it 🤞🏼 I can't recall much from the previous book, but I remember thinking the story had dragged on and probably should have been a trilogy. We'll see where this goes though 🤷🏽‍♀️

A very good conclusion to the Cainsville series, without actually being an ending. I‘m happy to know there are continuing stories, even though it frustrates me that this was billed as the final novel.

I‘ve been playing a gig this past week, which has kept me busy but also allowed me to read in the downtime. Finished Polaris Rising, then this, now on to a reread of Magic Bites.

My sore throat & sniffles turned into a full-blown cold so I left work early & would've been completely miserable if not for the realization my hold came in! So between bouts of coughing, sneezing & nose-blowing, I've been completely absorbed in this book & irritated when I need to put it down. If I weren't sick, I'd be staying up to read, but I need the rest. I'll get caught up on Litsy tomorrow (once I finish the book, of course!)

I finished Betrayals too quickly! I wasn't able to pace myself, damn it! Now I have to wait 5 days for my library hold and I don't know what the hell to do with my life. 😱I know, I know. It could be worse... At least I can read the e-book in a few days instead of having to wait until the paperback comes out in August, but DAMN!! #BookwormProblems #BookishProblems

Earlene It is worth the wait. I read them as they were published so I had to wait a year between books. Then share the book with two friends. We loved the series. 6y

I liked the humor, the writing, the plot and especially the hero. I liked him a lot more than the heroine, too bad she was the focus of the finale. I didn‘t read the whole series, just the finale. There is enough recap, and it‘s oddly satisfying not to have to wait for the final reveal.

I've loved this series from the start and I have always, ALWAYS been team Gabriel.

We got all the answers, we have a complete ending but it's how we got those answers and that ending that bothered me. I wanted a bit more oomph to the story, a bit more power and maybe a bit more insight into Gabriel's thoughts.

Having said this, I loved the series, I just wish I could have given 5 stars as I did with this books predecessors. 4/5 stars

One of the main reasons I have continued to read the Cainsville series is that I've really enjoyed the unique and complicated relationship between the three main characters. This book continued that trend. A twisty, satisfying conclusion to an entertaining series.

The ending I hoped for to my favourite Kelley Armstrong series. Laugh-out-loud funny, nail bitingly suspenseful, and pretty damn sexy. (Okay, slightly mawkish, but here I don't mind.) I'm going to miss these characters. And the crazy town of Cainsville with all its gargoyles.

Moonpa The dryads were hilarious! 7y
Leniverse @Moonpa Oh yes, they were excellent! 😄 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Moonpa Yep, loved the dryads! 😉 7y
tjwill I've never read this series, but I like the other Kelley Armstrong books I've read, so I need to check it out! 7y
Leniverse @tjwill Definitely! Just be aware that there are no vampires or werewolves. This series is more thriller/mystery with at first just a hint of the paranormal, and then an increasing amount of mythology. If you google "The Screams of Dragons" you should find a free prequel short story at Subterranean Press. Set half a century before the series. 7y

Might as well use this for #SeptemBowie #ModernLove
I consider this more of a selling point than a spoiler. There's a love triangle that goes back to mythical times, and every incarnation of it ends in Shakespearean style betrayal and death. Mainly because the guys are being stupid. But this current trio go "Nope. Not doing that. We're all friends, and it's complicated, but we're not having any drama or daft ultimatums. And def no murder."

With only four months left of the year I look at my incomplete reading challenges and despair. My TBR is too big and scary to list, or even contemplate. And so my #SeptemberMostAnticipated are books that aren't in my challenges, but just pure enjoyment for this weekend's #LitsyPartyOfOne (Except that I have found a challenge to put them into with #RIPXII 😂) Time to #fallintobooks and read for dear life. 😁

A fitting ending to a great series, and what a rollercoaster ride it's been. Twists and turns in this last installment, with quite a few that weren't even hinted at before giving this series new surprises until the very end. As we turn the last few chapter on Cainsville, I must say I'll miss this odd crew of fae, mythical creatures, mayhem, murder, mystery, traps, betrayals, double crosses and so much more.

kristen_reads One of my favorite series. I can't wait to finish it! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @kristen_in_wonderland I hope you'll be able to enjoy it soon.... I just saw the picture you posted...take care of yourself! 7y
Leniverse The next Cainsville book is out? It's the final book?! I'm partially pleased that the series won't be dragged out until it loses all appeal, but I think the story could handle, say, two more. 😂 7y
See All 6 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Leniverse Yes, it came out this month, so it hasn't been out very long. Yes, it's the last one, but knowing Kelley Armstrong, I wouldn't be surprised to see short stories spring up later, she likes to extend her world that way on her website and in print...at least she has for her other series and this one already has 5ish short stories, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see more. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Leniverse & I totally agree there. One reason I like Armstrong is she knows when to pull a series together, give it a nice conclusion & start something new. Too many series just keep going until the plot, characters, etc are all just ridiculously unrecognizable (or do the exact same thing in each book & never grow) and it losses what joy it had. As a reader, there's nothing worst than sticking with a series you loved & having that turn to hate. 7y
Leniverse Oh, I've only read one Cainsville short story. Need to keep an eye out for the rest! 7y
