Delta of Venus
Delta of Venus | Anas Nin
In Delta of Venus Anas Nin conjures up a glittering cascade of sexual encounters. Creating her own 'language of the senses', she explores an area that was previously the domain of male writers and brings to it her own unique perceptions. Her vibrant and impassioned prose evokes the essence of female sexuality in a world where only love has meaning. Her second volume of erotic writings, Little Birds, is also published by Penguin.

A well written Dirty book.

Had Delta Of Venus been published for public consumption at the peak of Nin‘s career, I can‘t even imagine what would have happened to her. She would have been pilloried, by the public and the press, and either died a notorious martyr or a penniless nobody. In that view, we‘re lucky to have access to this crucial work today, and it‘s worth a read… if you dare. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/delta-of-venus-anais-nin/

All right, here it is. Nin is amazing. She changed the erotica game w/ a woman‘s perspective. I was emotionally invested in her characters. Erotica is just not my genre. I don‘t wanna read tales of incest, beastiality, or of a 40-year-old man sexually awakening his 17-year-old adopted daughter. I don‘t. The other stories were great, but often I was just bored. It‘s just not my jam. 179/1,001 #1001Books #ReadYourSign Prompt 5, Ruling Planet: Venus

These are very unloving eroticas. As far as stories go, these would be better described as thought experiments. Still, Nin's language is lovely; vivid and wry. I would have loved for her to apply this experiment to fairy tales.

I think I'll pick up a copy of Nin's Diaries next. Of everything within this book, I had loved her preface best.

We haven't gotten to the erotic parts yet, but the preface has definitely hooked me.

I gave this one 4 star, the prose is beautiful and elegant like one would expect of Nin and most of the stories are interesting and enjoyable. Unfortunately 2-3 rather horrific and disturbing stories that littered the collection. These few stories included rape, abuse, cruelty. I usually avoid books with these in them but I‘m glad I stuck with this one because the good stories far outweighed the bad ones. #anaisnin #bookaddict #booklover #bookblog

Today was all about doing things I enjoy. My little one went out for the day with grandma so that left me free to spring clean, read and cook dinner for their return. It was such a calming and fun way to spend the day and I feel so much better for it now. 🖤🌻

The little one is asleep now so time for more Anaïs Nin and Martial, maybe a splash of Hardy too. It‘s such a humid and hot evening and I hear it‘s supposed to be getting hotter this week. I‘m done Mother Nature, Tell Gaia I quit, I want winter now please. ?? #bookaddict #booklover #bookblog #bookish #bookworm #bookstamums #anaisnin

quietlycuriouskate I'm into "will it never end?!" territory with the hot weather now: it's been WEEKS and I don't like it. I don't recall when I last had a proper night's sleep; constantly on the verge of a headache; can't go out without feeling like I'm being pounced on by a great heavy sweating beast... Just UGH! ? 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @River_Voice It‘s so horrible isn‘t it? I hate humid, hot summer days anyway let alone for this long. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 6y

I finished Poor Unfortunate Souls last night and now I‘m reading Anaïs Nin and Martial. I aim to read one Nin, one ancient classic and one other book at a time all summer! (Or at least until I run out of Nin and ancient classics!)

#junebookbugs Day28: #aplanetinthetitle
Recently acquired at a library sale. No description or quotes to be found on the book jacket. Inside cover blank. Back of the book blank. Too risque for words? Or maybe just a quirk of the publisher? I like to think it was the former. Had to have it.
@RealLifeReading

batsy Have you read her journals? They're very interesting and I enjoyed them. According to something I read somewhere her "journals" were more of a fictional construct than her fiction ? 7y
diovival @batsy You got me curious so I poked around Google. 62 years of journal writing! Wow!! 7y
batsy @diovival Yeah, they're very absorbing reads! 7y
2BR02B I have the exact same copy! I never noticed the blank jacket flaps. Hmmm. 7y
JazzFeathers What a beautiful edition. I've never read Aneis Nin but l've ment to for a long time. I have to get around to do it 😀 7y

Ok so... I started reading this book this morning. It was on my tbr list and I approached it without really knowing what it was. Did I mention that I started reading it on my morning commute...on the Underground!?!?!? Oh my... This is why God made e-readers. 😳😵😱🌶️🌋🔥

Foxyfictionista @BookishFeminist Indeed! I knew that it was going to be a bit saucy but I was completely unprepared for full on erotica. Also, my contacts adjust my sight for distance so I have to hold the book a fair distance away from myself to actually see the words. The District Line had quite the view today! Yeesh... 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Foxyfictionista London could use a little bit of humor today, glad you could provide 😂 8y
Foxyfictionista @BookishFeminist Yes, it is a sad day today. I've been trying to avoid the news. Ugh. 8y

DocBrown Is it any good? 8y
Foxyfictionista @mdhughes72 I'm not sure how to answer that. Some of it is sexy but a lot of it is disturbing and uncomfortable. I think that might say a lot about our culture though and how we, as a society, are fine with extreme forms of violence but how we get uncomfortable with extreme forms of sex. I've only read two stories so far so I'm going to carry on and see how it goes. 8y
mischa I'm fairly certain that this book is the reason I don't like erotica! At least one of the stories made me feel queasy. Good luck! 8y
Foxyfictionista @mischa I can completely understand that. It's definitely not for everyone. 8y

My favorite old bookstore in Evanston, IL. It's now closed but I used to love wandering through this labyrinth of old books and reading nooks. It was hidden in an alley and snaked around small, oddly shaped rooms. Each room had new surprises and treasures. My favorite memory was sitting there for an afternoon reading Anais Nin as a way to flirt with the guy I brought. I failed to notice he went off to browse while I read. 😂 #getindie

Louise Haha! Love that story! 😆 8y
CherylDeFranceschi I loved finding all the weird things shoved among the books, like taxidermy wearing a Northwestern Helmet, etc. And I loved how grumpy he could be. 8y
quirkyreader I have been to this shop. When I went there it had some first edition Wizard of Oz books. 8y

Zelma @Louise thanks! @CherylDeFranceschi and @quirkyreader yay, it's such a cool place. And the grumpy owner 😂 I was always afraid to ask him a question. I read they are opening a new bookstore in the same location! 8y
CherylDeFranceschi They did! It's called Bookends & Beginnings and it's very cute. Different, though- they're really nice! 8y
Zelma @CherylDeFranceschi I can't wait to visit and see it. Evanston was my last residence before leaving the Chicago area for good. I miss it! 8y
CherylDeFranceschi Let me know if you come to visit! 8y
Zelma @CherylDeFranceschi absolutely 👍 8y
MrBook Too bad it closed 😕. I don't like to hear about closing bookstores 😔. 8y
Zelma @MrBook agreed. I think the owner was ready to retire though. However, @CherylDeFranceschi just assured me that a new bookstore has opened it its place. 👍 8y
