Bitch Doctrine
Bitch Doctrine: Essays for Dissenting Adults | Laurie Penny
30 posts | 12 read | 83 to read
"An invaluable case for truth-telling in an age of chaos and lies." --Emily Nussbaum "[Penny] bravely keeps thinking and talking and learning and trying to make the world better." --Caitlin Moran Smart and provocative, witty and uncompromising, this collection of Laurie Penny's celebrated essays establishes her as one of the most important and vibrant political voices of our time. Bitch Doctrine takes an unflinching look at the definitive issues of our age, from the shock of Donald Trump's election and the victories of the far right to online harassment and the transgender rights movement. Penny is lyrical and passionate in her desire to confront injustice, and she's writing at the raw edge of a revolution-hungry zeitgeist, a time when it has never been more vital to actively question and fiercely dispute all forms of complacency, including social norms. This darkly comic, often biting yet empathic, revelatory collection will inform, challenge, and engage, and give readers hope and tools for change.

Everything I find paints anger as bad. I‘m tired of that. Some anger is justified. I‘m angry right now because I was supposed to have my cataract surgery today. I didn‘t have it because I learned, after sitting there for 2 hours & finally asking about it, that I needed an EKG before surgery. Did anyone tell me this? No. Was an appointment made for me to have one? Also no. I wonder how long they would have let me sit there if I hadn‘t asked? 😡

KathyWheeler I will say I‘m proud of myself for not trying to be nice about it. I let them know, without cursing, how angry I was that, by not doing their job, they had wasted my time. It‘s infuriating! 5y
Megabooks That is horrible!! 😡😡😡 5y
KathyWheeler @Megabooks I was so angry that I went out and emotionally ate over it — something I haven‘t done in a very long time. Usually, I can bring myself to be pleasant about screw ups; I couldn‘t do it today — too angry. I am salaried and have a ton of sick time. What if I were an hourly worker who had no sick time? 😡 (edited) 5y

TheEllieMo How bloody annoying!! 5y
KathyWheeler @TheEllieMo We don‘t use “bloody” in the US much; my mom, who was Canadian, did use it. It‘s perfect sometimes; I wish I‘d picked up its use from her.😊 5y
TheEllieMo @KathyWheeler other words did come to mind but I wouldn‘t want to use them in polite company 5y
KathyWheeler @TheEllieMo Other words came to my mind too; I was extremely proud of myself for not using them at the doctor‘s office; there was a time I would have done so, with less provocation. 5y
TheEllieMo @KathyWheeler well done for keeping your cool. I think people take more notice when complaints are delivered without cursing 5y
KathyWheeler @TheEllieMo I think you‘re right about that. 5y
wanderinglynn I‘m so sorry you had that experience. 💚 That was unacceptable of them to put you in that position. Very poor service on their part. And for the record, I don‘t think anger is bad. I don‘t believe any emotion is bad or negative. Emotions mean we feel, mean we‘re alive & human. And it‘s important to allow the emotion to be felt. Trying to suppress emotion is what‘s bad in my opinion. 5y
KathyWheeler @wanderinglynn I agree. When I was looking up anger to find a picture for this post, there was not one positive thing about anger. Everything was about how to suppress it, but to me, therein lies the problem. There are positive uses for good, healthy, and justified anger, but because of what we‘re taught about it, most of us feel bad about getting angry even when we have every right to do so. I‘m pleased I didn‘t try to pretend everything was ok. 5y

#NoFemmeber #NonFictionNovember Still on my TBR and definitely a #blameItonLitsy as Penny herself says in her book: “There‘s no point being nice in a burning world”. #IllMakeYouSorry Her essays range from US politics, to essays on Barbie dolls, pop culture and LGBT+ issues. Sounds like a must read!!!

Cinfhen I‘m pretty sure I have @arlenefinnigan to thank for first putting this book on my radar 6y

I. Loved. This. Book. Collected here are many essays tackling various aspects of feminism, from gender fluidity, rape culture, feminist history and more. I really relate to much of what Penny writes and find her thoughtful, intelligent, and straightforward. I good read for anyone with an open mind.

A great collection of essays. Very readable, honest and a real sense of how sexism and discrimination is prevalent in society. A point she seems to be driving home is that the ‘personal is political‘. It‘s divided into sections but a few of them obviously overlap. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Excellent book of essays. Laurie Penny is an evocative writer with a quick wit and a strong talent for systemic thinking and introspection. While many of these essays cover fairly basic social justice, socialist, and feminist issues that some readers may already know, Penny‘s prose is strong enough to make almost every essay entertaining and enlightening.

My #bookhaul from Powell‘s today! We went over after the Nutcracker (which I‘d never seen before) and apparently books along a certain theme appealed to me today. 😬 I also bought some gifts, which are not pictured. 🎁🎄

Only a few pages into this book and I can already tell it's going to be excellent. All politics are "identity politics" and using that term to describe certain causes over others is dog whistling. ??

This book gathers many of Laurie Penny‘s recent articles that have appeared in various publications (the first one in it was written just after Trump won the presidency). Her passionate writing about feminism is hopeful without being unrealistic. She knows her opponents, understands their arguments, and breaks them down. A must-read for those interested in feminism and gender issues.

A good read - very accessible up-to-date collection of essays from across the social justice spectrum.
Message - we can only make it better by sticking together, those rich, straight, white men don't want that so let's do it 😀👍

@Cinfhen - books I would have given my younger self. All the current social justice books that are about. The feminist books about at the time were too academic, middle class and educated- I wanted something more inclusive - which gladly exist now
