Who Runs the World?
Who Runs the World? | Virginia Bergin

Welcome to the Matriarchy. Sixty years after a virus has wiped out almost all the men on the planet, things are pretty much just as you would imagine a world run by women might be: war has ended; greed is not tolerated; the ecological needs of the planet are always put first. In two generations, the female population has grieved, pulled together and moved on, and life really is pretty good - if you're a girl. It's not so great if you're a boy, but fourteen-year-old River wouldn't know that. Until she met Mason, she thought they were extinct.

It‘s 60 years in the future, and men have been wiped out by a virus that attacks only the XY chromosome pairing. Women were left to run the world, and they got to work. But the virus still exists, so boys and men (born via IVF) live in isolation in places called Sanctuaries (much like plastic bubbles, as they can‘t go outside and risk infection). 15 y/o River, raised in a female-only society, encounters an injured XY, a male named Mason, and 👇🏻

OriginalCyn620 her decision to help him turns both their worlds upside-down. River, who was raised to believe that XYs were responsible for all the evils in once-was (the world before the virus) treats Mason badly at first. But Mason treats her badly as well, as he was raised believing that women are evil, valuing him and all other men only for their sperm, which is taken from them. 👇🏻 (edited) 4y
OriginalCyn620 I think this book raises interesting points, but the book is from just River‘s POV. I think maybe it would‘ve been more powerful if it had been told through both her‘s and Mason‘s perspectives. We got a little info about Mason‘s upbringing through his dialogue, but not enough to sense what it was truly like for him growing up. Because of that, the world-building didn‘t feel complete for me. 4y

There were lots of things I liked about this book, but it wasn‘t unputdownable. I felt the plot was meandering in places.

This was Book 6 from #MountTBR.

DivineDiana At least your working on the TBR! 🙂 6y

I finished Incarceron last night (Wow!) and am going to start this one that I picked up at the #BNbookhaul. This book is the winner of the James Tiptree, Jr. award, for exploring and expanding gender.

Bookladylinda I think I saw this book at the book store today. 🤔 6y

Just started reading this book and the story is good but I‘m not enjoying the narration. I hope it gets better because it really has potential.

Latest charity shop find, £1.75!

I've heard this is a particularly good book, with a really interesting concept - according to the blurb, a virus wipes out all the men on the planet leaving just females, with males thought to be extinct until the main character River meets one.

Anyone read this before?

This book had such an interesting concept - a matriarchy after a virus wipes out men - but unfortunately it wasn't fully realised. The world felt half built and too reminiscent of a patriarchal world. And a lot of the concepts felt a little stereotypical and clichéd. I enjoyed the read but it wasn't particularly original or thought-provoking.

Pickpick

I just finished 'Who runs the World?' by Virginia Bergin. It's a story about a future without men. Fifteen year old River hasn't thought about men and women until she finds Mason, a runaway boy. At first boys were represented as the evil guys and Bergin repeatedly showed this with the words 'Man. Men. Murder. Guns. War. Kill'. But after a while River discovers the truth about the male gender. I enjoyed the book but it didn't have this wow moment.

'She is miles from home.
She feels no fear.
Why would she? There are no predators. No such thing as ghosts.
Fear belongs to another time. It lives on only in the memories of others.
She feels no fear at all.
Not even when she sees it: the body lying in the middle of the road.' Who Runs The World?, Virginia Bergin. 💞 #booklover #feminist #books #booklove
