NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The great Crusader king Richard the Lionheart comes alive in all his complex splendor in this masterpiece of medieval tapestry.Margaret George A.D. 1189. After the death of his father, Henry II, and the early demise of two of his brothers, Richard is crowned King of England and immediately sets off for the Holy Land. This is the Third Crusade, marked by internecine warfare among the Christians and extraordinary campaigns against the Saracens. Richards surviving brother, the younger John, is left behindand conspires with the French king to steal his brothers throne. Only their mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, now freed from decades of captivity, remains to protect Richards interests and secure his destiny. In this engrossing saga, Sharon Kay Penman delivers a novel of passion, intrigue, battle, and deceit. Lionheart is a sweeping tale of a heroic figurefeared by his enemies and beloved by those he commandedwho became a legend in his own lifetime. [Sharon Kay] Penman displays her usual grasp of sweeping historical events as well as an uncanny ability to get inside the hearts and minds of her real-life characters. Her reputation for character-driven, solidly detailed historicals is richly deserved.Booklist The beautifully described settings and the characters interactions are simply outstanding. The Historical Novels Review Penman takes historical writing to a whole new level. The Sacramento Bee [A] gritty, unsentimental, and richly detailed epic.Publishers Weekly Dont miss the exclusive conversation between Sharon Kay Penman and Margaret George at the back of the book.

Pickpick

This has taken me three weeks - it felt like a real chunkster and at times a real slog. As ever with Penman the research is fabulous and the characters including the often forgotten women jumping the page, alive and vibrant. This is the 4th in her quintet about Henry, Elinor and their children and most is based around Richard‘s crusade and it is a little too battley for me! Did enjoy my last chapters and cocktail though

Leftcoastzen Your cocktail is? 7mo
Bookwomble ❓🍸❓ Enquiring minds want to know! 🧐 7mo
Itchyfeetreader @Leftcoastzen @Bookwomble it was delicious but one where one was enough. It was a Bakewell daiquiri - rum, cherry syrup, lime and amaretto! 7mo

TrishB Richard was very battley! 7mo
Itchyfeetreader @TrishB he certainly was - at over 800 pages I will be pausing before reading the 5th novel in the series 7mo

Wonderful book about Richard 1. Vying with Henry V for the all English King title. Once King he actually only spent about 6 months in the country. Fascinating character, brilliant read 👍🏻

“Autumn that year painted the countryside in vivid shades of scarlet, saffron, and russet, and the days were clear and crisp under harvest skies." — Sharon Kay Penman.

umbrellagirl @DGRachel I will look for the others since I‘m enjoying this one. I got it in a swap and so glad I did. 6y
umbrellagirl @CouronneDhiver Apparently they are a food but I don‘t plan to indulge in that particular item. I am also avoiding cuy. I like trying different flavours but I am not a big meat eater. 6y
CouronneDhiver That‘s news to me - I just thought they were used for transportation and/or livestock in/around Cusco. 6y

I was out most of the day, so I‘m late to the party, but I loved my #easterbasketbookswap parcel from @benchley1

The highlight was the two well-chosen books, but my son would say it was all of the chocolate. So much chocolate 😍 Sorry I didn‘t get a pic of that but he moves pretty fast. Thank you so much 💙

benchley1 Easter=chocolate in my family. Hahahaha. 7y

I'm driving about 1,250 miles across south Texas for work this week so I'm wrapping up this monster audiobook. Only two hours left in it, which I will finish halfway to my next destination tomorrow. Today I passed this one-car accident. I saw the family who all were standing nearby and thankfully ok. But it was also a good reminder to me to be careful on these back country roads where sometimes one forgets to be careful!

GoldenGirl I just did an article for my paper on a rollover fatality on I-45. Driving these days is scary! Glad they were okay. 7y
Melkyl Glad everyone was okay 7y
Texreader @GoldenGirl Very scary. I was the only car waiting for permission to go around and my heart stopped. Once I realized all was ok I took the pic to remind myself to be careful. I've already had to nap once at a rest stop. 7y

Having learned Penman went to my alma mater I think I'll try her historical fiction to prepare me for vacation to England shortly. Any advice on her best books and series, particularly audiobooks? Anyone think Phillipa Gregory is a better choice (also whom I've not read yet), and if so what audiobooks do you recommend? I've already read the books by these faves: Cornwell, Sansom, Follett, Rutherford, Chadwick, Gabaldon

LeeRHarry She's great! 7y
KaatjeH Love Penman!! 💖 7y
Reecaspieces Penman is fabulous. Can't go wrong with any of her books. Some are lengthy. So audible may be better for you. I love Gregory as well. She is a little bit more fluffy than penman. But I still love her 7y

DGRachel Penman is my favorite HF author and I love all of her work, but I didn't care for the audiobook narrators I've heard. Sunne in Splendor is a true standalone. Then there's the Welsh Princes trilogy and her series on Henry II and his sons, particularly Richard. Not a Gregory fan. 7y
JillR I've only read Lionheart so far, but have read a lot of Phillippa Gregory - I'd say Lionheart was much denser, if that's the right word, but a good read. I like Phillippa Gregory for quick, easy reads - if you're visiting the Tower of London, I'd give a couple of hers a try... 7y
readinginthedark I haven't read any Penman, but I enjoyed the audiobook of Gregory's novel about Katherine of Aragon! 7y
