Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao
Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao | Martha Batalha
Euridice is young, beautiful and ambitious, but when her rebellious sister Guida elopes, she sets her own aspirations aside and vows to settle down as a model wife and daughter. And yet as her husband's professional success grows, so does Euridice's feeling of restlessness. She embarks on a series of secret projects - from creating recipe books to becoming the most sought-after seamstress in town - but each is doomed to failure. Her tradition-loving husband is not interested in an independent wife. And then one day Guida appears at the door with her young son and a terrible story of hardship and abandonment. The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao is a wildly inventive, wickedly funny and keenly observed tale of two sisters who, surrounded by a cast of unforgettable characters, assert their independence and courageously carve a path of their own in 1940s Rio de Janeiro. A deeply human and truly unforgettable novel from one of the most exciting new voices in world literature.

Welp. You really can‘t judge a book by its cover. I thought this was going to be a fun quick female-empowerment themed read. I was right only about the quick part. I didn‘t hate it - but it felt like the author was trying to hard to deliver a message and be funny(?) at the same time. I didn‘t hate it, but can‘t really recommend it either.

This is a good and entertaining novel. The style reminds me of Fannie Flagg books.

A woman chooses a mostly conventional life in reaction to her sister‘s choice to run away with her boyfriend. This novel looks at dissatisfaction with societal norms and the invisible work that women do. It is translated from the Portuguese and it very definitely feels South American in sensibility. What a clever little book. Wonderfully drawn characters. Look beneath the surface of the multiple strands of story to find a razor-sharp observation of how women survive the boxes they get put in by husbands, families, and life circumstances.

I participated in my first #24in48 last weekend. The goal: read for 24 of the 48 weekend hours. Between musical theater, a hockey game and kids‘ birthday parties, I realize this was a Sisyphean task, but I did it! #readingchallenge @24in48

Translated from Portuguese, this book tells the story of the Gusmao family. It‘s the 1940s and women have ambitions, but those ambitions are stunted by the men and circumstances. I️ liked it, but that‘s as far as I️ got with it. I‘m not sure I️ understood all the layers b/c sometimes the writing or the translation (not sure which one) felt clunky. Overall, I‘m not sure how memorable it is. Glad it was an ILL.

A really fun, quick read, this is a little slice of mid 20th century Rio de Janeiro.

Euridice is super smart, resourceful and stifled by the expectations of her as a Brazilian housewife. As we follow her we also hear the stories of a cast of colourful characters in her neighbourhood.

I believe this is out now in Portuguese, with the English translation coming out later this year. Highly recommend 👍
