Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.

Lotte and Luise meet at summer camp, surprised to find they share the same face and the same birthdate and the same birthplace and wait a minute ...

It's creaky sometimes, but given that it's a children's novel from 1949 about twins who reunite their divorced parents (it's the source of "The Parent Trap"), I'm surprised that it hasn't aged worse. The author's respect for children is strong, and that helps a lot.

I'm a little late for this #MoviesInApril prompt, but I couldn't miss the chance to gush about the charming little book that inspired #TheParentTrap! Our leading ladies are curly-haired Lisa from Vienna and braid-wearing Lottie from Munich who meet at summer camp and discover they‘re identical twins. I love both film versions, but I love the book more, and I keep two copies- just in case something happens to one! 😆

I can't give this book a review pretending I didn't read it solely to compare it with the 1961 film, which is one of my fave movies ever, which I have seen appx three thousand times. In many ways, this book is completely different, but weird identical (ha! get it?) things pop up between them, such as exact lines of dialogue. The biggest difference, of course, is that the book is set in 1949. In Germany.

Long before Lindsay Lohan made us fall in love with her as Annie + Hallie in the nineties adaptation of The Parent Trap, there was a German children‘s book that inspired it. There are *some* threads in the book of the movie(s) we love — summer camp, twin swapping, a self-involved potential stepmother — but the similarities stop there, and the story is shockingly dark. The #wanttoswitchout prompt made me think of this book from when I was a kid. This is the book the movie The Parent Trap was based on this German book, and I had this edition when I was little. Lisa and Lottie instead of Sharon and Susan. I loved this one! #survivingdecember

I don't have a lot of #retrocovers that you haven't already seen for today's #riotgrams, but here's my Lottie and Lisa (which you could just see the spine of in yesterday's picture). I've loved this book since primary school and adore the Hayley Mills film. Even though splitting up twins is terrible parenting, it's a brilliant story.

Germany has a lot of authors, new and old. If you want to find #IndigenousAuthors in my bookshelves, you have to have a look at children's books.

PS: I know the Ardagh book was not written by a German, but the illustrator is German.

After binging on the Parent Trap, Nina and I are rereading this book. I kove that it is a classic and released by the imprint in my friends name.
