Poe: Stories and Poems: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Gareth Hinds
Poe: Stories and Poems: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Gareth Hinds | Gareth Hinds

In a thrilling adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's best-known works, acclaimed artist-adapter Gareth Hinds translates Poe's dark genius into graphic-novel format. It is true that I am nervous. But why will you say that I am mad? In "The Cask of Amontillado," a man exacts revenge on a disloyal friend at carnival, luring him into catacombs below the city. In "The Masque of the Red Death," a prince shielding himself from plague hosts a doomed party inside his abbey stronghold. A prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition, faced with a swinging blade and swarming rats, can't see his tormentors in "The Pit and the Pendulum," and in "The Tell-Tale Heart," a milky eye and a deafening heartbeat reveal the effects of conscience and creeping madness. Alongside these tales are visual interpretations of three poems -- "The Raven," "The Bells," and Poe's poignant elegy to lost love, "Annabel Lee." The seven concise graphic narratives, keyed to thematic icons, amplify and honor the timeless legacy of a master of gothic horror.

It was just okay. I am not sure I would consider this a GN. I think of it more as a fully illustrated collection since little to no speech or thought bubbles were used. Some of the stories like the Mask of the Red Death were so paired down, it took it‘s soul away, while others, we just too long winded (I‘m looking at you Tell Tale Heart).

Flew through this graphic adaptation of Poe‘s horror greatest hits in under an hour. The art is well done, and enhances the stories and poems. The only issue I have to with the abridgment of the actual text, but this is still a collection I‘ll have to buy myself. 😍🖤

Which is your favorite story by Poe? I loved "The Cask of Amontillado"
I found "The tell tale heart" to be very modern, and the "Raven" a masterpiece
Great illustrations set the mood wonderfully.
Highly recommended ??

For anyone wondering, these are the stories and poems included in this Poe graphic. I thoroughly enjoyed this and found that the visual style was different for each work, which was impressive. Highly recommend!

Last summer I read the graphic version of Beowulf by Gareth Hinds. I just found his graphic of Poe's work at the local library the other day. This picture at the beginning of The Tell-Tale Heart is really dark and subtle with a heart tree growing up through the house. Very cool!

I am an over the top Edgar Allan Poe fan. When I saw this graphic novel available for early review, I knew I had to request it.

Poe's work pairs beautifully with the visual of this graphic novel. The images portray the horror, despair, and Gothic feel of Poe's stories. Since "The Cask of Amontillado" is my favorite, I was interested to see how it would be visually portrayed. The horror of the bricking up of the wall is perfectly captured.

BookishMarginalia I love Hinds! 7y
