Afterlife
Afterlife | Marcus Sakey
Soon to be a major motion picture from Imagine Entertainment and producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Between life and death lies an epic war, a relentless manhunt through two worlds…and an unforgettable love story. The last thing FBI agent Will Brody remembers is the explosion—a thousand shards of glass surfing a lethal shock wave. He wakes without a scratch. The building is in ruins. His team is gone. Outside, Chicago is dark. Cars lie abandoned. No planes cross the sky. He’s relieved to spot other people—until he sees they’re carrying machetes. Welcome to the afterlife. Claire McCoy stands over the body of Will Brody. As head of an FBI task force, she hasn’t had a decent night’s sleep in weeks. A terrorist has claimed eighteen lives and thrown the nation into panic. Against this horror, something reckless and beautiful happened. She fell in love…with Will Brody. But the line between life and death is narrower than any of us suspect—and all that matters to Will and Claire is getting back to each other. From the author of the million-copy bestselling Brilliance Trilogy comes a mind-bending thriller that explores our most haunting and fundamental question: What if death is just the beginning?

Mehso-so

This is a tough book to review. There were parts I loved & had me gripped, but there were also parts I found myself skipping over & also parts where I wanted to throw the book out the window! The authors version of the afterlife is one I sincerely hope isn‘t real, for all our sakes. Oh, & the ending made me want to just scream at it like it could hear me. I don‘t often give so-so‘s but it deserves one I think. #MountTBR2019 #Bk15

RvnclawWhovian I really liked his Brilliance trilogy but I haven‘t had the chance yet to read any of his stand-alone‘s 6y

Can‘t sleep but headache has eased enough(with a handful of painkillers!)to try reading a bit more. Couldn‘t get into Little Fires Everywhere so picked this up at random to try. Been sitting on my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom since 2017 after @Liberty & @bookriot put out a list of best new sci-fi that year. Glad I did, I‘m already at Chapter11! I‘ll persevere until either I fall asleep or my brain starts sliding out my ears, whichever comes first🧠

Bailedbailed

Bailing on this at the halfway point. I find the world-building really flimsy, and all the characters sound the same. It feels like this was written from a screenplay, with big showiness but little heart. I'm also confused why they used a British narrator who struggles with American accents when the story takes place in Chicago.

I'm the first to read this library book 📚

readingallthetime I can't explain the genre. It just wasn't the book for me. Perhaps the Ghost meets The Matrix love story blurb on the cover should have alerted me 🤔 (edited) 7y

What do you think the afterlife is like?

The resolution/ending was weak, then I questioned the whole premise. The middle however kept me going. A few hours of my life I'll never get back

This book sounds so interesting.

"There were tears, and touching. Not sex; touching. The comfort given in the middle of the night after a particularly vicious dream. Touching meant to calm and to claim. To say, wordlessly, that you are where you belong, and the nightmare was only that."

Get this awesome novel on your radar (out 7/18). It's like if David Mitchell wrote a cross between Inception and American Gods, but in the gritty, sarcastic style of Nelson DeMille's best cop thrillers. Wild read! Really had fun with this!
