Landscape with Invisible Hand
Landscape with Invisible Hand | M. T. Anderson
National Book Award winner M. T. Anderson returns to future Earth in a sharply wrought satire of art and truth in the midst of colonization. When the vuvv first landed, it came as a surprise to aspiring artist Adam and the rest of planet Earth but not necessarily an unwelcome one. Can it really be called an invasion when the vuvv generously offered free advanced technology and cures for every illness imaginable? As it turns out, yes. With his parents jobs replaced by alien tech and no money for food, clean water, or the vuvvs miraculous medicine, Adam and his girlfriend, Chloe, have to get creative to survive. And since the vuvv crave anything they deem "classic" Earth culture (doo-wop music, still-life paintings of fruit, true love), recording 1950s-style dates for the vuvv to watch in a pay-per-minute format seems like a brilliant idea. But its hard for Adam and Chloe to sell true love when they hate each other more with every passing episode. Soon enough, Adam must decide how far hes willing to go and what hes willing to sacrifice to give the vuvv what they want.

My flight reads. A film adaptation of Landscape recently released, and my wife is a fan of the author. Quirky, a tad gross, good twist on visiting aliens and how they affect society.
Hammers was a quick, noir-inspired magical monster tale. The main character laid the noir lingo on thick (it was kinda hard to know what he was talking about some times), and an early interlude was a little confusing, but it comes together nicely.

Adam's family tries to live after the invasion of the vuvv. Adam focuses on his artwork to tell the stories of his current life.

Quite a different take from the usual alien invasions. An interesting read.

Audio listen while making cheesecake for the hubby.

M T Anderson‘s YA SF novel is a slim but very good satirical riff on the dystopian genre that exposes the inequalities inherent in contemporary society and postulates what happens when we meet an alien species that‘s better at capitalism than humans are with a dry wit and a fine eye for human hypocrisy and tendency to self-deception.

Woah. Weird. Same author of Feed. Really hard to follow but a good dystopian novel.

Another book featured at the Walker Books #YA preview evening. My teenage self is so jealous of me because of all these sci-fi books that are coming out now! #youngadult #event

I've been reading a ton of middle grade lately, so I grabbed these #ya books tonight at the library to mix it up. Although, with the reputation these have, maybe I'm just looking for a good cry 😭 🤷‍♀️

This book is thought-provoking but also incredibly depressing. Not that I usually expect Anderson‘s work to be cheerful, but still.

All I have to say is it was a bit ordinary. Concepts were clever but never grabbed me.

This wacky science fiction novella addresses serious topics—access to health care; income disparity; the function of art—and reminds me a little of Atwood‘s The Heart Goes Last. Smart, insightful and entertaining.

I can‘t stand piano music, usually, and I have no idea what the hell is going on in the song, because there aren‘t any words or singing, but this girl clearly feels it, plays it as if she‘s cursing all of us through the keys. It‘s a fluttery sort of cataclysm. It sounds like utter collapse.

MT Anderson calls the aliens in his latest book the “vuvv.” Did anyone else think of Adam Rex‘s aliens, the “boov” … or it just me? Two funny novels about space invaders, anyway. And both novels have a lot of relevance to American politics and economics.

Two books in a row with a theme of self-reinvention. I like that. 😊

Aliens have landed and have given tech and meds but life on earth is not necessarily better. Adam struggles to make money to help fed his family but everything he tries seems to backfire and cause more problems. Loved the ending - I thought it might be a sad one but the resolution was good. The author packed in a lot in such a slim book.

This was a weird one -- in a good way. If you love 'Grasshopper Jungle' like I do, this book is for you. If not, well, it's a fun read. And yes, you can read it quickly - the book clocks in at 150 pages. What happens when the alien invasion comes with a carrot- offers of FREE advanced technology & cures for all illnesses- instead of a stick? Adam will tell you nothing good. Art, humor, faked love & nostalgic aliens collide in this fantastic romp.

You know how you sometimes just shove a book into your bag because you are going to be out and about and you might need something to read? Yeah, well I did that & then I started this one because I needed something to read and it is great! So good and I totally get a 'Grasshopper Jungle' vibe from it (& that's a good thing).

Super excited to read both these. Super nice of Walker Books to send them to me 😊
The Traitor and the Thief is out now and Landscape with Invisible Hand is out October 1 (in Australia - I think it's out in September in the States).
