The Tent
The Tent | Margaret Atwood
A new collection of dazzling short fiction. One of the worlds most celebrated authors, Margaret Atwood has penned a collection of smart and entertaining fictional essays, in the genre of her popular books Good Bones and Murder in the Dark, punctuated with wonderful illustrations by the author. Chilling and witty, prescient and personal, delectable and tart, these highly imaginative, vintage Atwoodian essays speak on a broad range of subjects, reflecting the times we live in with deadly accuracy and knife-edge precision. From the Hardcover edition.

I can see how some might hate this while others love it- there is very little to anchor a reader. And while some of the pieces flew over my head, there are enough gems to keep the whole of it fun. Atwood‘s prose is too often delicious to be turned away. Special Place on Bookshelf.

Not that I've ever read anything by M.A. that I didn't love, but my favorites in this collection were: Impenetrable Forest, Encouraging the Young, Bring Back Mom: An Invocation, and But It Could Still. This little book has earned itself a permanent place on my nightstand for future rereading. 🖤

Tanisha_A Sounds very interesting! 🙂 4y

I‘m not good at ranking because I like more conditions - top 6 that made me think, top 6 relaxing, etc. So ask me tomorrow and my answer might be different, but here are my #top6reads for 2020. Thanks for the tag @batsy
Want to play @MrsMalaprop @Cuilin @this_teacher_reads

Daisey I know exactly what you mean. How can I compare two reads when I loved them for completely different reasons? 4y
batsy I was torn between My Mortal Enemy and Archbishop for my pick. Today I feel like I should have gone with Enemy 😆 Great list! 4y
Lcsmcat @batsy It was only easy to choose because Archbishop was a reread, so I eliminated it. 😀 4y
Lcsmcat @Daisey Right? I love Agatha Christie and Anthony Trollope, but for very different reasons! 4y

Too short to be short stories, there are 35 short fictions in these 155 pages. Favorites were “Three Novels I Won‘t Write Soon” “Winter‘s Tales” and “Chicken Little Goes Too Far,” but they all share Atwood‘s quick humor and elegant prose. #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

I loved this collection of...excerpts? Margaret Atwood is somewhat removed from her novels in this collection. I loved it. Such concise language and powerful imagery, but with lots of humor. She explores everything from cats to imagining what it would be like if Chicken Little‘s apocalyptic ideations went too far. Easy book to pick up and not put down. But the mini essays make it something you can also leave and come back to.

I'd thought this book of "mini-essays" would be a quick read, but It wasn't the case for me. One reason was the brevity of the essays/stories gave me little to latch on to. Many had a creepy quality that made me not want to read them in the middle of the night, which is when I do much of my reading with an infant. And overall they just felt very hit or miss. It's hard not to enjoy Atwood's writing, but some of this seemed less polished than usual.

Illustrations by Margaret Atwood. It's worth the read just to see these drawings.

This is fictional essays - like short stories, but not. I'm pretty sure they are going over my head. I was hoping for a Handmaid-like novel. This isn't that.

KimHM Atwood's Alias Grace is Handmaid-like, if you haven't read it yet. 7y

...you don't want to create evidence, you don't want to attract the wrong sort of attention to these loved ones of yours, some of whom – you're now discovering – are not people at all, but cities and landscapes, towns and lakes and clothing you used to wear and neighborhood cafés and long-lost dogs.
