Who Are You, Really?
Who Are You, Really?: The Surprising Puzzle of Personality | Brian Little
26 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
This fun, smart read for anyone eager to better understand (and improve) themselves argues that personality is driven not by nature nor nurturebut instead by the projects we pursue, which ultimately shape the people we become. Traditionally, scientists have emphasized what they call the first and second natures of personalitygenes and culture, respectively. But today the field of personality science has moved well beyond the nature vs. nurture debate. In Who Are You, Really? Dr. Brian Little presents a distinctive view of how personality shapes our livesand why this matters. Little makes the case for a third nature to the human conditionthe pursuit of personal projects, idealistic dreams, and creative ventures that shape both peoples lives and their personalities. Little uncovers what personality science has been discovering about the role of personal projects, revealing how this new concept can help people better understand themselves and shape their lives. In this important work, Little argues that it is essential to devote energy and resources to creative endeavors in a highly focused fashion, even if it takes away from other components of our well-being. This does not mean that we cannot shift from one core project to another in the days of our lives. In fact, it is precisely that ability to flexibly craft projects that is the greatest source of sustainability. Like learning to walk, forcing ourselves out of balance as we step is the only way in which we can move forward. And it is the only way that human flourishing can be enhanced. The well-lived life is based on the sustainable pursuit of core projects in our lives. Ultimately, Who Are You, Really? provides a deeply personal itinerary for exploring our personalities, our lives, and the human condition.

I love quizzes. I saw a few people doing this on Litsy so I had to also.😋😋😋 https://www.buzzfeed.com/rinri/if-you-were-a-book-what-genre-would-you-be-3c8kx?...

CaliforniaCay I got mystery too! It's not really my genre, but I feel like that description is pretty spot on 😳 7y

Saw this on @GarthRanzz ‘s Page. I love book quizzes! 💕 (Confession: I might have gotten YA the first time I took this. 😳)
And here is the quiz: https://www.buzzfeed.com/rinri/if-you-were-a-book-what-genre-would-you-be-3c8kx?...

GarthRanzz That‘s okay. I got Literary the first time. Couldn‘t make my mind up on the business so I retook it and changed my answer. 😊 7y
Leniverse I got Romance. 🙄 Which would make anyone who knows me, and especially anyone who's dated me, laugh incredulously. Think I should try again then? 😂 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks @Leniverse 🤣 Too funny! The YA actually mocked me and called me immature. Thank you but I prefer the phrase, young at heart. 7y

CouronneDhiver I got Western! 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks @CouronneDhiver I can‘t even think what answers would have gotten you that, lol! 🌵 7y
hyperhawk I got fantasy 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks @hyperhawk I think fantasy is one of the nicer descriptions “creative, free-spirit” 🎨🎭🎼 7y
hyperhawk @CoffeeCatsBooks ya but I am not creative or free spirited 7y
alisiakae I got YA as well and thought the description was rather mean-spirited! 7y
CouronneDhiver I just went with my honest opinions ... “earth” “go for hike” “realist” and so on. Definitely had a good giggle at the answer! 🤠 Yeehaw. 7y
Laura317 I got mystery. I‘m curious about the other choices though. 7y
drokka I got YA too. There are a couple spots where none of the options was even close to the right answer. Like the date one. Oh and the what annoys you most question, I struggled because almost all those things are on my pet peeves list 😂 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks @Laura317 I know there was also literary, romance, western, YA, and fantasy but I don‘t know if they did any other genres. 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks @dronka I think it was the crying babies that might have cinched YA for me, lol, 🍼 7y

Now that I have read a couple of TED based books, I'm going to go out on a limb and make a proclamation: Watch the talk; skip the book. The talks are more dynamic and short. This book has some interesting ideas, but doesn't have enough meat for a book and the writing is much less dynamic than a talk might be. Just ok

#netgalley

Lcsmcat I would disagree as far as one book goes. I found Quiet to be excellent at expounding on her talk. I highly recommend it for any introvert. 8y
Onceuponatime I also enjoy the talks for the same reasons you mentioned! I do like Brene Brown's books, though, and Simon Sinek's "Start With Why." Two of my favorite TED speakers. 8y
Well-ReadNeck @Onceuponatime @Lcsmcat I wonder if it matters which came first, the book or the talk?! I agree with both of you about the books you mentioned. Haven't seen either talk nor were either book marketed as TED books. Hummmmm. 🤔 (edited) 8y
Onceuponatime That's a good question...I never thought about which came first! 8y
