300 Days of Sun
300 Days of Sun: A Novel | Deborah Lawrenson
Combining the atmosphere of Jess Walters Beautiful Ruins with the intriguing historical backstory of Christina Baker Klines The Orphan Train, Deborah Lawrensons mesmerizing novel transports readers to a sunny Portuguese town with a shadowy pastwhere two women, decades apart, are drawn into a dark game of truth and lies that still haunts the shifting sea marshes. Traveling to Faro, Portugal, journalist Joanna Millard hopes to escape an unsatisfying relationship and a stalled career. Faro is an enchanting town, and the seaside views are enhanced by the company of Nathan Emberlin, a charismatic younger man. But behind the crumbling facades of Moorish buildings, Joanna soon realizes, Faro has a seedy underbelly, its economy compromised by corruption and wartime spoils. And Nathan has an ulterior motive for seeking her company: he is determined to discover the truth involving a childs kidnapping that may have taken place on this dramatic coastline over two decades ago. Joannas subsequent search leads her to Ian Rylands, an English expat who cryptically insists she will find answers in The Alliance, a novel written by American Esta Hartford. The book recounts an American couples experience in Portugal during World War II, and their entanglements both personal and professional with their German enemies. Only Rylands insists the book isnt fiction, and as Joanna reads deeper into The Alliance, she begins to suspect that Esta Hartfords story and Nathan Emberlins may indeed converge in Farowhere the past not only casts a long shadow but still exerts a very present danger.

This was super slow and the characters were uncompelling. Despite that I was interested in the dual storylines and the descriptions of Portugal so I kept going. And going. And it was ok. Right up until the end. Jo's choosing to believe an idea which had plenty of evidence against it, and the lack of tying in ANY other of the child abductions that were mentioned, completely annoyed me. 😠

This book was a very enjoyable companion to my trip to the Algarve in Portugal. The book describes the Algarve from a tourist perspective and weaves World War II Lisbon with present day Faro in a tale of corruption, kidnapping and murder. Fun read! 🇵🇹

I had four credit on Hoopla that I had to use before the end of the month. I chose four books that are in my physical shelf so I can read the book, and listen to the audiobook at the same time. Here‘s what I chose. Book 1/4 ☺️

Have any of you guys read this one? What did you think?

BethM I thought Hoopla was a library app? 6y
Clwojick @BethM It‘s attached to your library card. They have a set amount of downloads per person per month. I know that it depends on funding. Depending on how much it costs the library per digital rental. 6y
BethM That makes sense. We use overdrive/Libby and there's no limit. 6y

Hated almost every minute. The end was the most ridiculously stupid thing I've ever read. The characters were flat, the ending was abrupt and the book within a book was even more poorly written. There was no sense of the setting which was the reason I bought it in the first place.

I think I've learned my lesson. When a book is compared to 2 of my all time favorites, it will be nothing like either of them. This one is supposed to combine the setting of Beautiful Ruins with the history of Orphan Train. It really, really does not. It is so slow and drawn out. I don't care about the characters or what happens. I should bail, but I'm almost done.

Like a trip to Portugal w/ the vivid descriptions. Set in present & past w/ a mystery & a story-within-a-story. I like WWII fiction that gives perspective of people in different countries-citizens/expats & author does it well. Paired w/ Fried Tuna w/ Tomatoes/Onions & Rosemary Salt Potatoes on blog.

Bookhound1 Fantastic! I could tuck into that tonight! 8y

This may turn into a perfect summer book for me- an international setting, bright sun and heat as a back drop, current timeframe and light writing but not exactly fluff. This is set in Portugal and the narrator had a nice accent. I'm hopeful!

Lindy Ooo! I've been looking for more fiction set in Portugal. Thanks! 8y

Mehso-so

Audio. I was all for the 'yes, read this book as it is wonderful'. Maybe it is the full moon Monday that kind of sucked but if this had been a physical book, it would have gone flying at the end. Fun story but the ending just added poop sprinkles to what had been up to the end something nice.

Alternating time periods, a current mystery with ties to war time Portugal. The two story lines are equally captivating and both bring the location to life. Interesting to read about the war from Portugal's pov, not many books cover that angle.

A wonderful historical/mystery/romance read that alternated seamlessly between present day and WWII. The beautiful setting was so vividly described that I could imagine myself being in Portugal, and I loved the hint of Gothic strewn throughout the book.
