A name for something I didn‘t completely understand as a preteen. I wish I could have read this in the late 90s.

Beautifully written, heart breaking & soul inspiring all wrapped into one. I look forward to reading more of her books.

CoverToCoverGirl Wonderful review! She‘s been on my get to eventually list for a very long time. 2y

Book 142

Lisa Genova writes about another curious, obscure syndrome. Left-sided neglect is caused by brain damage to the right hemisphere and makes the injured unable to process stimuli from the left. It's fascinating and unnerving to imagine living with this! The characters and story itself are standard--overworked protagonist is forced to reassess her priorities and take life slower after a car accident. 3.5⭐s

This was a bit of a disappointment after Still Alice. I did not like the characters, I disliked the husband. The recurring use of fancy words like latte, coffee this and that, fancy vacations, fancy jobs and fancy education annoyed me. It felt a bit like boasting and namedropping. It didn't feel realistic at all. It was all a bit shallow and there was little to no character development.
TBR since January 2018; 400 pages.

When I first read this bookI had difficulty connecting to the concept of left neglect & the impact it would have on someone‘s life. Then my Mum (pic) had a stroke that left her with left neglect. As I reread this book today I was struck with the painstaking detail Genova uses to describe this truly debilitating disorder. I was also struck by how accurately she described the pain this disorder brings to patients & families alike. Just brilliant! ❤️

MemoirsForMe What a sweet pic of your Mom! Hope she‘s doing well. 🌺 4y

I‘ve been neglectful, Litsy! I used to spend most of my social media time here, among you wonderful people. In April, I started a YouTube channel to ostensibly learn how to film & edit & I figured I would talk about the thing I love the most- books, but never expecting it to take off. But it has & also taken up most of my time. But I vow to do better this year because I miss the kindness/warmth of everyone here. Sorry for taking you for granted!!

Someone is feeling neglected. My son and his family have moved in for a few days, sewer problems in their rental house... But Shiloh is not feeling it, she has to compete with my 2 granddaughters and their dog (in the background, laying on Shiloh's blanket) poor baby. 😂

TheSpineView Poor thing! It's hard when you are used to being an only child! 🧡🐾 5y

Brilliant. Genoa can make a reader empathize with the people who suffer from TBI. I'd never heard of this condition till I read this book. She brings the brutality, the stubbornness, the overwhelming frustration, the ultimate humility, and even humor to the forefront. This book is just as well written as Still Alice.

Imagine that in an instant half of your world disappears. You can see but not process information presented on the left side of your body. Right hemisphere dysfunction or “left neglect” is the focus of this heart wrenching book. This is a fictionalization but highly accurate portrait of the havoc this type of brain injury can have on people and their families. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Having a mother who suffered a severe stroke three years ago and still deals with Left Neglect, this book was a familiar and great read for me. Cried my way through the last few chapters. Once again, the resilience of the human spirit is unbelievable. 💕

This was on my TBR pile and thought I‘d give it a go as I just finished her latest. Bad idea . I‘m sure it‘s not the book but me. Enough of doom and gloom I needed something lighter. Maybe one day I‘ll give it another go. I‘m sure a few of you reading this liked it. Just me right now! Not the book. Next review will show you what I read to lighten up my life .😊

My favorite thing after finishing a book is to look closely at the cover art. It means so much more after reading the story within. Maybe that‘s why movie covers are so aggravating to me. This story was just the right blend of heartbreaking and uplifting without being trite. #LitsyAtoZ

You know someone is from New England when they use the term “water bubbler” 😁

No_One I have never heard this term! Does it mean “water fountain”? 7y
MelissaS @No_One yes, it means water fountain. Growing up, we just said “bubbler.” I remember saying that when I moved to grad school in AZ and nobody knew what I meant 😂 7y
No_One @MelissaS so interesting! Thank you! 7y
Aseleener It's also a Wisconsin thing. I had never heard it before I moved here. I've heard it is because of the Kohler company. 7y

This is a very well researched book on left neglect which I throughly enjoyed. Left neglect is a form of brain damage where you lose your left side of everything. The author pulled me right into the book and I felt I was there, sometimes I laughed and sometimes I felt incredibly sad. This book will stay with me for a long time.

Loved this book and finished in 2 days. I have a good understanding now of an issue that happens with a TBI, and also happened to my Dad with his brain tumor. Explains so much. I really like this author, will try others of hers. Also showing my hydrangeas, which are neglected until Spring...

I think Genova is brilliant at capturing insights into the mind of someone suffering with a mental ailment, but I consistently find myself wishing that her writing ability matched her insights. This book is fascinating for shedding light on a little-known disorder that had me continually trying to imagine my own self coping with the affliction.
