11 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
The launch of a brand new series by the internationally bestselling, critically acclaimed author of The Coroner's Lunch With worldwide critical acclaim, Colin Cotterill is one of the most highly regarded "cult favorite" crime writers today. Now, with this new series, starting with Killed at the Whim of a Hat, Cotterill is poised to break into the mainstream. Set in present day rural Thailand, Cotterill is as sharp and witty, yet more engaging and charming, than ever before. Jimm Juree was a crime reporter for the Chiang Mai Daily Mail with a somewhat eccentric familya mother who might be drifting mentally; a grandfathera retired copwho rarely talks; a younger brother obsessed with body-building, and a transgendered, former beauty pageant queen, former older brother. When Jimm is forced to follow her family to a rural village on the coast of Southern Thailand, she's convinced her careermaybe her lifeis over. So when a van containing the skeletal remains of two hippies, one of them wearing a hat, is inexplicably unearthed in a local farmer's field, Jimm is thrilled. Shortly thereafter an abbot at a local Buddhist temple is viciously murdered, with the temple's monk and nun the only suspects. Suddenly Jimm's new life becomes somewhat more promisingand a lot more deadly. And if Jimm is to make the most of this opportunity, and unravel the mysteries that underlie these inexplicable events, it will take luck, perseverance, and the help of her entire family. Mehso-so

This was so-so for me with the caveat that this was the third mystery I read in a row, so I could have just been bored. I did very much enjoy the characters, the setting, and the quotes from George W Bush at the beginning of each chapter. #FoodAndLit #Thailand

Took a little field trip at lunch to pick up my DC library card and some Thai food for #FoodAndLit

DC has a reciprocal agreement with my city‘s library so we can check out each other‘s books.

I listened to the tagged book while walking. It‘s only okay, but I need to find out why there‘s a random quote from George W Bush at the start of each chapter.

Aimeesue I love all our reciprocal agreements - I need to go renew my Prince George‘s County card soon! 13mo
Bookwormjillk @Aimeesue it‘s great! I mostly use them for Libby, but now that I‘ve been to the DC branch near my office I might go in person more often. 13mo
Susanita I don‘t have access to DC library, but I can get a card in most Maryland counties, which really helps for Libby. 13mo
Bookwormjillk @Susanita this is a whole new world for me 13mo
CSeydel I love the Dr Siri books and I‘ve been wanting to check this one out 13mo

We had all the weather this morning (sun, rain, wind, RAIN, sun, WIND) which meant I could take a picture of an empty playground for #LitsyWalkers.

Was listening to @ReadingEnvy and Thomas, rather than an audiobook, si my tbr‘s bigger than when I left the house. Maybe I should read more Rachel Cusk before my summer hols...

And detoured back via the library, picking up a Jimm Juree novel, as recommended by @rretzler .

rretzler Hope you enjoy it! 5y

Mehso-so

This was my #K read for #LitsyAtoZ and unfortunately was just meh. I found the plot was all over the place but it did have some likeable characters which I found redeeming. It seems like a lot of people like his Dr. Siri series which I may still check out but I don't think I'll read anymore in this series.

I'm sorry but I just had to share this line from my current read. I will never be able to sit on a rattan chair again without thinking of mouse S&M. 🐭

@AlaMich @RealLifeReading bit of a slow start but it picked up and I really enjoyed. Would definitely read more. Especially after finding out the reason for all George W Bush quotes. #K #LITSYATOZ @BookishMarginalia

I loved this book! So many interwoven mysteries, and the entertainment of watching a slightly dysfunctional Thai city family settle into a sudden new life in the boonies. Jimm Juree, the narrator, is sharp and witty, edgy and modern. I actually liked this book more than Cotterill's first series set in Laos, which was good but could be slow. Look forward to the rest of this series. #aroundtheworldin80books #litsyAtoZ #aprilbookshowers #ruralsetting

My current listen is set in #setinsoutheastasia @RealLifeReading Picked up on whim 😉.
Unless it really picks up it's heading towards a So-So. #aprilbookshowers

RealLifeReading That's disappointing. I think his Dr Siri Paiboun series (the coroner of Laos who has to do some detective work) isn't too bad 7y
AlaMich I did like this, although it's not as good as the Dr. Siri series. I like it for being a very light read with interesting characters. 7y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @AlaMich @RealLifeReading Its not that I hate it. Feels obvious that author is setting up a series with long bits of exposition. It's just not grabbing me. I don't feel the need to set in the driveway and listen to the rest of chapter when I get home. Easy to walk away from story and come back some other time. I would give next in series a try though. 7y

Finally the reason behind all the George W. Bush quotes at start of chapters. 🤷 It was weird.
