Nikki Tate is infamous, even by Las Vegas standards. Her dad is sitting on death row, convicted of killing his best friend in a gambling dispute turned ugly. Freaking loved this book. This is Lamar's best book yet: tightly plotted and filled with well-developed characters. This turned out to be an incredibly quick read for me.

BillBlume @Nicohlay I should have. Would need to download the app again, though. Keep thinking, "It can't be that much longer," so I don't download it. Also, not fond of reading two books at once, but I've noticed some folks do that a lot without issue. This is perhaps a lesson to me. 8y

I have a confession: I prefer ebooks. As an author, that almost feels like a betrayal to the craft, especially since ebooks hurt many indie bookstores. That said, I dig it when a publisher steps up their game to make the print version a worthwhile investment. I love the design Scholastic gave Overturned. It's not just the great cover. It's little touches like the skull on the front beneath the jacket and the playing card theme throughout. #yalit

I'm finding Marco Beltrami's score to Logan provides a perfect musical accompaniment to Lamar Giles' Overturned. The book has some dark, grim elements to it, but balances that with wit and heart. I'm about a fifth of the way into this book, and it's been a lot of fun.

Chapter three does a nice job establishing Nikki's credentials as a legitimate, high stakes poker player. I also like how it lends cred to her father's reputation, too.

Two chapters into Overturned, and the stage is already set for lots of messy drama. Lamar gives Nikki Tate an easygoing voice that fits her age (16) while exposing the unnatural maturity that circumstance has forced on her. Good stuff.

Vexingcircumstance He is the cutest! He looks like a smaller version of a medium-largish sized husky/border collie/? Mix I had that I loved but had to rehome years ago. I always wondered what else was in his mix since he didn't look much like a husky (his mom was pure bred husky) or a border collie (dad was a stray that they said looked like a border collie but probably was a mix). 8y
