This wasn‘t BAD it‘s just the main character is so unlikable I nearly gave up. #graphicnovels #representation
First book complete for the #deweyreadathon. I selected this one because I wanted to read more from Asian-American authors about their experiences. The graphic novel‘s protagonist is such a jerk that it‘s hard to care what happens to him. He‘s selfish, shallow, depressed, and angry about everything. Overall I wasn‘t a fan, though I do appreciate the brave approach to delicate issues. #readathon
Hi y‘all - just following up with my #ShortStorySwap folks - a few of you haven‘t posted your unboxing photos yet. I think @LapReader may still be traveling but what about @merelybookish @Ddzmini and @BookishMe ? Please let me know if your boxes don‘t arrive so I can make it up to you.
This pushed all my buttons and brought out the petty little devil on my shoulder. A moody book perfect for a gray, rainy day.
Starting today. Another random pick from the library. Anybody read this one?
Shortcomings is a great title if you enjoy heavily character-driven narratives with unlikable protagonists. As the title suggest, everyone in this book has their shortcomings, and no one comes out of it looking dandy. But I also found I understood why the characters did what they did, making them feel authentic and relatable even while they were being unbearable.

Came up short 😢 but managed to finish 2 books and make good headway in 2 more. Hoping to hit it out of the park next time! #8in48 #butmarchedagainstfacism #littlereadingbetterthannone #24in48
Shortcomings explores the insecurities and contradictions that surround his racial identity as an Asian-American. There's little to like about pessimistic slacker Ben Tanaka--a college drop-out who takes his girlfriend Miko for granted, condemns academic political discussion despite his inability to escape the subject, and lusts after much younger women--but his ambitions and failures reveal much about an experience rarely represented so nakedly.
Man, Adrian Tomine does dialogue and pacing so well! I have loved his work since the early 90s when I worked at a comic book store in SF and he would hang out from time to time. His work is authentic, transparent and has resonance. I still think of some panels from years ago. This is no exception.
