#TitlesAndTunes #DramaQueen

Well, Lucia is the biggest literary Drama Queen going, and I dare anybody to try and upstage or out-diva Grace Jones!
Book: Queen Lucia, of course. Song: Private Life.

🎶 Your marriage is a tragedy, but it's not my concern
I'm very superficial, I hate everything official
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out🎶

@Cinfhen @BarbaraBB

Aimeesue And now I want some Lobster à la Riseholme ? 1y
Ruthiella What would Miss Mapp think! 🤔 1y
LeahBergen I love me some Lucia. 😆 1y

Cinfhen Grace Jones🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻outstanding!!!! 1y
Bookwomble @Aimeesue But how will you get the recipe? 😄 1y
Bookwomble @Ruthiella Mapp would be jealous of any accolade won by Lucia, while simultaneously fuming that you could entertain the smallest idea that she might be a drama queen! Lucia would accept the title of Drama Queen as naturally belonging to her, and put on a pageant to celebrate 👸 1y
Ruthiella @Bookwomble Yes, that‘s perfect! Miss Mapp would not want the title but she also would not be happy with Lucia being singled out like that. 😆 1y
Bookwomble @LeahBergen I know you do 😊 Have you read any of the continuations by other authors? I have a few, but haven't ventured into them yet. 1y

This didn‘t quite reach the magical heights of Mapp & Lucia. I can see why Nancy Mitford was such a fan of the series. The way Benson expertly caricatures the life of a small English town, full of nosy residents, is quite a feat. I love Georgie and Lucia. I absolutely love Lucia‘s ridiculous attitude and her struggle to maintain her position of matriarch of the town. She would irritate me to no end in real life, but she‘s a top notch character.

LeahBergen Mapp and Lucia is definitely the best of the bunch but I still love each book and the adventures of those two idiots. 😆 I‘ve been holding off on reading the sixth because I know I‘ll miss them! 4y
Ruthiella I would avoid some one like Lucia in real life like the plague, but in book form she is delightfully obnoxious 😀 4y

Originally published 1920.

In short order, Mrs. Lucas will learn that Mrs. Quantock has acquired a yoga teacher -- slightly vexing to her, because Lucia herself is the reigning queen of culture and the arts, but only until she rationalizes that she can annex this innovative and possibly applaudable social coup.

Lucia seems far less likeable in this first installment than she does in Mapp and Lucia, while Georgie (if such a thing is possible) seems moreso.

Aimeesue I've always found Lucia extremely unlikeable. But she's also ridiculous, which is where the humor happens. 6y
Bookwomble @Aimeesue She becomes quite hideous in this, which I think, perhaps, is in contrast with the lovely Olga, whereas she comes off better when compared to Mapp, who seems at times to be positively malevolent. It will be interesting to see Lucia in action in London in the next volume. 6y
Aimeesue I enjoyed that one - all the social scheming and running around. I think the whole point of Lucia is to be fairly awful. But in a refined, scheming way. And all her friends see through her anyway. 😋 6y
Bookwomble @Aimeesue I think my view of Lucia is somewhat sweetened by the crush I had on Geraldine McEwen in the role 💘☺ Still, while I know she's a dreadful snob and frequently awful, in M&P there seemed to be an underlying generosity of spirit missing in QL. it's still all quite deliciously waspish, though! 6y
LeahBergen I‘m reading the series in order and have finished the first four (Queen, London, Miss Mapp, Mapp and Lucia). I thought Lucia was deliciously odious and the absolute worst ... until I was introduced to Mapp in the 3rd book. 😂😂 6y

As Lucia's prize party guest is Olga Bracely, an opera singer famous for her Brünnhilde, I thought I'd give Wagner another crack after a thirty year period of indifference. I must be growing into it as I'm enjoying this performance, at least: https://youtu.be/2JgMt8GWdyU
#booksandmusic

quietlycuriouskate I'm sorry to say Wagner makes me want to hide under the dining table. 🙉 6y
Bookwomble Me too, generally. I tried Parsival, in particular, during an acute Arthurian phase in the '80s and that es enough to put me off until today! I'm not converted, by any means, and Wagner carries a dubious political load to my mind, but I'm perhaps a little more open to giving him another try in small doses 🙉 6y

"The hours of the morning between breakfast and lunch were the times which the inhabitants of Riseholme chiefly devoted to spying on each other."

This neatly sums up the chief "action" in this book ❤
(I know the photo is of Tillingites, but a group shot of Riseholmeites is hard to find.)

hilded I love the picture! 6y
Bookwomble @hilded It's quintessentially Benson! It's from the BBC adaptation of Mapp and Lucia from a few years ago. I enjoyed that version, but much prefer the C4 adaptation from the mid-80s. 6y
hilded Yeah, I saw that 👍Haven't seen the C4 adoption though! 6y

BookaholicNatty This looks good!!! Thanks for sharing! I like BBC adaptions a lot! 6y
Bookwomble @hilded @BookaholicNatty Miranda Richardson was excellent as Mapp in the 2014 version, equalling Prunella Scales's performance, but Geraldine McEwan and Nigel Hawthorne both excelled as Lucia and Georgie. Also, the earlier series has more episodes and so you live in Riseholme and Tilling for far longer. 6y
hilded Well that's a good recommendation, seems I need to see if I can find that version on the library :) Thanks! 6y

Already so tired but sorry @rubyslippersreads I had to finish it today. I liked the last chapters so much, I couldn't wait one more day to finish it, even if I can't stay up any more second. 😂😊

Way more entertaining than I expected! Very tempted to start book 2 straight away.

I generally prefer to like main characters, so I'm amazed how E.F.Benson manages to fill an entire village with people you really shouldn't like or sympathise with at all, and yet still comes out with a warm and funny book. Very curious to meet Miss Mapp now.

If I'd read this first, I doubt I'd have gone on to discover Benson's masterpiece 'Mapp and Lucia'; but doing it out of sequence after having loved M&L so deeply made this a pretty disappointing read too - catch 22. Some funny situations and dialogue, and it was interesting to see the characters of Lucia and (gay-gay-flamingly-gay) Georgie in inchoate form. But this did not fit together into a memorable whole. Read Mapp and Lucia instead!

saresmoore I won‘t rush to read this one, but I sure do like Georgie & Lucia. 7y

No, this is not a #QuoteOfTheDay. I'm just really curious about the grammar. Does the use of "must" here sound correct to you? I'm wondering if this is some British English or perhaps even more regional variation: as an English teacher and a Canadian it sounds completely incorrect to me, and I'm always correcting my students when they try to use "must" in the past like this. I am intrigued.

Cinfhen It sounds "off" to me as well 7y
bedandabook It doesn't sound right to me and I'm English, so I don't think it's a regional thing. 7y
saresmoore Sara ran to the Google machine because she must know the answer! Hurm, I dunno. It is weird. But then, “needs must” doesn‘t make much sense to me, either. Maybe must is just a musty old word and we don‘t know how to use it anymore. 7y

Theresa I'm stuck on the outlying strings of macaroni. I've never seen macaroni big enough to have outlying strings. Spaghetti yes, but not macaroni. 7y
shawnmooney @saresmoore And you have sent me running to the same place, and I came up with this, which, astonishingly, tells me that historically "must" is in fact the past form of the ancient verb "mote"!!! https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/51023/is-must-ever-grammatical-as-a-... 7y
KathyWheeler The whole sentence is weird. If you put a "now" in front of "must" it might make a little more sense in terms of tense. I agree with Theresa; I've never seen "strings" of macaroni-- only spaghetti. 7y
stargazerblue49 @Theresa I believe the outlying strings are referring to the cheese. 7y
Tamra Definitely seems odd. 7y
LeahBergen @Theresa Macaroni used to refer to any sort/shape of pasta - at least in the vintage cookbooks I've read. 🙂 7y
readinginthedark The sentence sounds wrong because, if fully formed, it should read ", and he must..." But I think it's technically valid. It just sounds awkward, and I would advise someone to change that if I were editing the author's work. 7y
shawnmooney @KathyWheeler @readinginthedark I don't think either adding "now" or "and he must" corrects the standard grammatical error that "must" cannot be used in the past. Oh, and I didn't have space in the original post to specifically say that this is a past tense narrative, not present tense (either of your fixes would work if the text was in the present tense). I think Benson is using the archaic past-tense "must" described in the down-in-the-weeds... 7y
shawnmooney ...post I linked above. So interesting! 7y
readinginthedark Good point! Sometimes I have to start shuffling things around before I can figure out why it sounds wrong to me. 7y
KathyWheeler @shawnmooney It's just wrong then. 7y
shawnmooney @KathyWheeler Hardly wrong, coming from E.F. Benson - just a fascinating archaic grammatical holdover, methinks. :) 7y

Lucia's scheming to retain her status as the arbiter of culture in her little English village is entertaining, and the cast of characters is amusing. Although the book is meant to be a comic take on village life (and it is that), it also gives some insight into the very real social views of the time. I don't know if I will read the entire series, but I would like to visit Lucia again.
