Death Sits Down to Dinner: A Mystery | Tessa Arlen
7 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
"Lady Montfort is thrilled to receive an invitation to a dinner party hosted by her close friend Hermione Kingsley, the patroness of England's largest charity. Hermione has pulled together a select gathering to celebrate Winston Churchill's 39th birthday. Some of the oldest families in the country have gathered to toast the dangerously ambitious and utterly charming First Lord of the Admiralty. But when the dinner ends, one of the gentlemen remains seated at the table, head down among the walnut shells littering the cloth and a knife between his ribs"--

I‘m probably just grumpy, but so far is too stilted and boring for me (pg63) and when I find myself making excuses not to read when it‘s too hot to do anything, it‘s time to move on.

A dinner celebrating Winston Churchill‘s 39th birthday is hosted by a close friend of Lady Montfort.By the dinner‘s end a do-gooder”Lord is found dead at the dinner table. While Lady Montfort is discreetly sleuthing among the peerage, Mrs.Jackson, the intrepid housekeeper of a neighboring estate, keeps her ears open to the “ downstairs” servants‘ chatter. Nothing is what it seems-an unexpected twist in the end.

This was a bit slow at the beginning, but I'm glad I hung with it. I fairly flew through the second half. An excellent whodunnit, I did not figure out the culprit before it was revealed. Set before WWI, the setting and characters kept reminding me of Downton Abbey. You do not have to have read the first of the series to enjoy this. Looking forward to reading more of Arlen's books.

I'm going to start labeling these posts #Tuesdayswithbooksandcoffee. After the craziness of the past week, it was nice to relax and read. Usually I take along my current nonfiction, but I'm trying to finish this and get it back to the library. And hubby is in trouble for tempting me with shortbread 😊

#currentread I made a trip to the library this morning for hubby, who had an injection in his hip yesterday and is taking it easy today. I wasn't going to get anything for myself, since between basketball and going to Orlando for DIL's baby shower on Saturday, my reading time is limited this weekend. But this ended up on my pile. It's off to an interesting start.

robinb I was thinking about starting this series! The third one just came out, and a favorite author of mine just recommended it. Would love to hear what you think of it! 8y
Lynnsoprano @robinb I am really enjoying it so far! I found out about it the same way you did. 8y
