Avatar and Philosophy: Learning to See | George A. Dunn
6 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
James Camerons critically acclaimed movie Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards and received countless accolades for its breath-taking visuals and use of 3D technology. But beyond its cinematic splendour, can Avatar also offer us insights into business ethics, empathy, disability, and the relationship between mind and body? Can getting to know the Navi, an alien species, enlarge our vision and help us to see both our world and ourselves in new ways? Avatar and Philosophy is a revealing journey through the world of Pandora and the huge range of philosophical themes raised by James Camerons groundbreaking film Explores philosophical issues such as religion, morality, aesthetics, empathy, identity, the relationship of mind and body, environmental and business ethics, technology, and just war theory Examines a wide range of topics from the blockbuster movie, including attitudes toward nature, our responsibilities to nonhuman species, colonialism, disability, and communitarian ethics Written by an esteemed group of philosophers who are avid fans of Avatar themselves Explains philosophical concepts in an enjoyable and accessible manner that will appeal to all levels of readers With a new trilogy of sequels now announced, this is the ideal entry point for understanding the world of Pandora for fans and newcomers alike

TheSpineView @Texreader Same with me. Love lake living. What lake? I am on Keowee 8n upstate SC. 6y
Texreader @TheSpineView Canyon Lake about a mile north of where I live now San Antonio. Probably not nearly as nice as your lake! 6y
TheSpineView @Texreader I don't know about that. Regardless, lake side living is the way to go. ❤ 6y
Kaye Probably right here where I started out , but we‘ve also talked about retiring to the Myrtle Beach area,so,who knows ? Maybe we‘ll go stay there for awhile when we retire in a couple years to see how we‘d like it longer term than a vacation. 6y
TheSpineView @Kaye sounds lovely! 6y
Guildedearlobe The moon or an interstellar ship. That or Florida but the cool historic part not the beach or Disney. 6y
MirrorMask Somewhere on the equator 6y
mabell Somewhere on the ocean that gets a lot of snow🌨❤️ 6y
SamanthaMarie Somewhere with all four seasons and the town has to have a really good coffee shop and a really good bookstore. I am easy haha! Also. A Christmas Cruise sounds so lovely! 6y

MirrorMask @TheSpineView Definitely ♨️ 6y
Bostonmomx2 I hope to buy an RV and travel the US and maybe Canada for a good while. The career I‘m training for will allow me to work on the road and make a decent income even after my husband retires. Then if we find a place we love, we can retire there. In another probably 10 years, I‘ll have no immediate family left so we‘ll have no ties. 6y
TheSpineView @Bostonmomx2 Wow! That sounds fabulous. 6y
Bostonmomx2 @TheSpineView the no family left part?? 😂😂 totally kidding! 6y
Bostonmomx2 @SamanthaMarie once it‘s just myself and my husband, our christmases will all include a cruise or some type of vacation! 6y
TheSpineView @Bostonmomx2 Love Christmas cruises. I have done 3. So nice to go somewhere warm in the dead of winter. 6y

My #litsyavatar is taken from a 1940s costume murder mystery party I went to a few months ago. I have this awesome group of friends that gets me to do things that are things that are out of my comfort zone. My husband and I have been married for 21 years, and this is really the first “friend group” we have had. I‘ve had friends, he‘s had friends, we‘ve even had a few couple friends, but this is our group. We love them. @Jjohnsen is one of them.

Jjohnsen That was so fun, it‘s a great photo. 7y

I'm not done with this yet: gonna take a break with some new books I've gotten this month, but it's fascinating so far.
