The Whole Art of Detection
The Whole Art of Detection: Lost Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes | Lyndsay Faye
Internationally bestselling author Lyndsay Faye was introduced to the Sherlock Holmes mysteries when she was ten years old and her dad suggested she read Sir Arthur Conan Doyles short story The Adventure of the Speckled Band. She immediately became enamored with tales of Holmes and his esteemed biographer Dr. John Watson, and later, began spinning these quintessential characters into her own works of fictionfrom her acclaimed debut novel, Dust and Shadow, which pitted the famous detective against Jack the Ripper, to a series of short stories for the Strand Magazine, whose predecessor published the very first Sherlock Holmes short story in 1891. Fayes best Holmes tales, including two new works, are brought together in The Whole Art of Detection, a stunning collection that spans Holmess career, from self-taught young upstart to publicly lauded detective, both before and after his faked death over a Swiss waterfall in 1894. In The Lowther Park Mystery, the unsociable Holmes is forced to attend a garden party at the request of his politician brother and improvises a bit of theater to foil a conspiracy against the government. The Adventure of the Thames Tunnel brings Holmess attention to the baffling murder of a jewel thief in the middle of an underground railway passage. With Holmes and Watson encountering all manner of ungrateful relatives, phony psychologists, wronged wives, plaid-garbed villains, and even a peculiar species of deadly red leech, The Whole Art of Detection is a must-read for Sherlockians and any fan of historical crime fiction with a modern sensibility.

67/150 I've read my fair share of non-Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories and they vary in quality because either the writer is slavish to Doyle's style and adds nothing to the character, or they vear too far away and it seems like Holmes in name only. Most of these stories lean towards the former, which doesn't mean they aren't still enjoyable to Sherlock fans, just nothing ground breaking. 3.75/5

My friend, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, while possessed of one of the most vigorous minds of our generation, and while capable of displaying tremendous feats of physical activity when the situation required it, could nevertheless remain in his armchair perfectly motionless longer than any human being I have ever encountered.

If you read Sherlock Holmes pastiche mostly for clever crimes and victorian atmosphere, this short story collection, starting with cases before the duo met and up to 1900, might not be for you.
If, on the other hand, you enjoy reading about Holmes and Watson's friendship, you should pick this up (let's be honest here, if they weren't friends, Watson would have strangled Holmes in their first year as flat mates).

I am a sucker for all things Sherlock so I enjoyed this one. There‘s some stories that didn‘t hold my attention as much as others. The narrator is fabulous. #readwomen

In case you'd like to go back to traditional Holmes stories, while allowing a mix of originality from the author at the same time, this book's the one to pick.

Thanks to the publisher for providing a digital galley of this book.

This was such a fun trip back into the world of Watson and Holmes. I feel like I needed this reminder after that horrendous season 4 of the BBC series( it's a given that Steven Moffat cannot help fucking up a thing I love) so it was nice to dive back into the historical fiction version. Faye has done an excellent job capturing Doyle's style of storytelling.

Out today! Reading this book feels like Lyndsay Faye entered the fictional world of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson and observed them first hand throughout their careers. The camaraderie between Watson and Holmes is perfect and the stories are a delight to get lost in. Perfect for fans of Sherlock Holmes, historical fiction, and well crafted sentences.

luvamystery65 Currently reading this. It's absolutely wonderful, but I expect nothing less from Faye. 8y
