In 1946, a young female attorney from New York City attempts the impossible: attaining justice for a black man in the Deep South.Regina Robichard works for Thurgood Marshall, who receives an unusual letter asking the NAACP to investigate the murder of a returning black war hero. It is signed by M. P. Calhoun, the most reclusive author in the country. As a child, Regina was captivated by Calhoun s "The Secret of Magic," a novel in which white and black children played together in a magical forest. Once down in Mississippi, Regina finds that nothing in the South is as it seems. She must navigate the muddy waters of racism, relationships, and her own tragic past."The Secret of Magic" brilliantly explores the power of stories and those who tell them."

FEATURING: THE SECRET OF MAGIC by Deborah Johnson

A year-old murder, a book paralleling events and characters, and the South in the 1940's after WWII.

You will melt into the pages and the comfort of Southern living, but you will also need to be prepared to shed some tears and feel fear for some of the characters.

Ms. Johnson is a master with words.

This book was a random find in a charity sale and I read it a couple of years ago. A woman's search for answers about a black soldier's death in Mississippi reveals some brutal truth and love. The writing captures the Southern feel beautifully and touches on part of America's history of racism. If you liked books like The Help, To Kill A Mockingbird and The Secret Life of Bees, you‘ll appreciate this book.

I struggled with today's #readjanuary all day because it feels particularly powerful and timely right now. I cheated a bit and am not sure these are #inspiredbymlk; however, they are all related to social justice and speaking truth to power. Books, both fiction and nonfiction, give us a way to try to understand our lives, who we are, and who we want to be. Using books to grow through #socialjustice, though--what could be more fitting?

Pickpick

Gorgeously written, tugs firmly on the heartstrings with an absorbing sort-of mystery at its heart. Advise possibly not reading the ending in public however, was welling up at my desk...
