[Longer review, cont in comments] Fascinating look at MLK's legacy. MLK is a frequently whitewashed figure. We look at his major successes without his underlying beliefs & flaws and paint him as a hero instead of the complex man he was. This book does his legacy justice & humanizes MLK in a way I haven't quite seen before. It examines his mental health struggles, religion/politics, & interpersonal struggles within the Civil Rights Movement. 👇🏼

BookishFeminist It also examines the impact his assassination had on his legacy & the future of Black rights. It also looks at how influential he was in the Black community, our ongoing racial struggles, his successors in the movement. Dyson has a strong analysis of Obama's presidential campaign (this was pub 2008 before he was elected), Kennedy's and Clinton's presidencies, & pop culture. Highly recommend to get a fuller picture of his life. ✊🏾 8y
NerdyRev I did not know this existed. Thank you for your review! 8y

vivastory Fantastic review 👍 👏 👏 8y
moranadatter How well does it handle his politics? Does it touch on the labor movement? 8y
BookishFeminist @kmdartist It handles them very objectively & discusses his socialism and anti-war stances at length. It touches on the labor movement some but that's more Du Bois's angle than it was King's. 8y
Caterina How much does it include his (super amazing) wife? 8y
BookishFeminist @Caterina Some but not much! It's pretty strictly focused on his legacy. But Coretta's memoir just came out & you might be interested in that: 8y

I struggled with today's #readjanuary all day because it feels particularly powerful and timely right now. I cheated a bit and am not sure these are #inspiredbymlk; however, they are all related to social justice and speaking truth to power. Books, both fiction and nonfiction, give us a way to try to understand our lives, who we are, and who we want to be. Using books to grow through #socialjustice, though--what could be more fitting?

This is a heck of a book to be reading today and this week. Our celebrations often create a false narrative surrounding Dr. King's legacy and beliefs, and Dyson argues really well that this is because we have demons we have yet to face. #InspiredbyMLK

Joybishoptx Now I have the U2 song in my head. And that's ok. It's a darn good song. 8y
BookishFeminist @Joybishoptx Which one? 😂 I don't listen to much U2 so I didn't even notice a reference 8y

TheBookbabeblog84 Wow. Adding this book to my list of Social Justice reads. 8y
BookishFeminist @TheBookbabeblog84 Its great so far. I'm ~1/3 done and it's just astounding how much of MLK life's work and message is overlooked. You'd like this one I think. 8y
BookishFeminist @NCNY 😂😂 thanks! Of course it is. Goes to show you how much U2 I know. I know the song but had to look up the lyrics to get the reference. 8y

My kids and I joined a packed theater today to see this amazing movie #inspiredbymlk (or at least he seemed to be an inspiration to these remarkable women). #readjanuary

Krysta Hubby and I just watched this (and the movie "Fences") last night! We don't recognize MLK Day in Canada, but it sure must have been on our minds anyway; he was an influence to the characters in both films. 8y
Annl I saw it last week! It was so good! 8y

A story of overcoming barriers, Bessie Coleman was the first female African-American pilot. She had to go to France to learn to fly and get her license, as no one would teach her in the U.S. She refused to fly in any airshow that didn't allow both black and white people to attend. From sharecropper childhood in Texas to pilot - an incredible story that my son and I have read many times. #inspiredbymlk #readjanuary

Like @Weaponxgirl I'm #inspiredbyMLK to confront the racism in my own country (UK) where we find it too easy to pat ourselves on the the back for abolishing slavery "early" (1833) and to forget the crimes of an Empire that still existed within living memory. I can't recommend this collection enough, it's too eclectic, too important and too devastating. It should be essential reading. I laughed, I cried and I learned so much. #ReadJanuary #LRC7
