The Selected Poems of Nikki Giovanni
The Selected Poems of Nikki Giovanni | Nikki Giovanni
10 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
When Nikki Giovanni's poems first emerged from the Black Rights Movement in the late 1960s, she immediately took a place among the most celebrated and controversial poets of the era. Finally, here is the first compilation of Nikki Giovanni's poetry. It is the testimony of a life's work from one of the commanding voices to grace America's political and poetic landscape at the end of the twentieth century. From the revolutionary "The Great Pax Whitie" and "Poem for Aretha" to the sublime "Ego Tripping" and the tender "My House," these 150 mind-speaking, truth-telling poems are at once powerful yet sensual, angry yet affirming. Arranged chronologically, they reflect the changes Giovanni has endured as a Black woman, lover, mother, teacher, and poet. Here is the evocation of a nation's past and present -- intensely personal and fiercely political -- from one of our most compassionate, outspoken observers.

I just cut the crap out of my finger so I am only grabbing a few of my larger #poetry books for this selection. Poetry used to to a favorite but I stopped reading it somewhere along the way. I have been slowly drifting back towards it which I am grateful for. #aprilbookshowers

PurpleyPumpkin That does not sound good! Hope your finger is okay. Great poetry selections btw. 8y
Jas16 @PurpleyPumpkin Thank you! It seems to be ok but no more using knives before coffee for me! 8y

I have a quite a few #signed books but this one is probably my favorite. I don't read as much poetry as I used to but I have deeply loved Nikki Giovanni since I was in high school. I was positively tongue tied when I met her and don't think I managed to say anything intelligible but I have cherished this ever since.

My poetry professor several years ago introduced me to Nikki Giovanni and I became enamored with here. I'm looking forward to reading this.

This is a review of "The Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection" audio cd. This collection is read by Nikki herself, which makes is an incredible piece of performance art. Her poems are beloved for good reason. They are musical, full of love, anger, righteous calls for justice and empathy. Giovanni's voice is the perfect instrument for these verses. This CD includes poems from many of her books. Poetry on audio is a rare treat--don't miss this one!

ReadingEnvy I've read it all but haven't listened, will definitely try! 8y
