It is time to uncover some buried history and learn how to love our neighbors in a better way. This book is so very well written and it provides the teaching, guidance and challenges we need to make the necessary changes. Be humble, be teachable and please do something.

I have the serendipitous timing to stumble upon a panel speaking and awareness event at the book in the historic downtown I was visiting circumstantially Wednesday! So giveaways of banned books (mostly kids and youth) to emphasize a need for greater access to diverse stories to build empathy and to expand our awareness of the people and culture out there we meet, to better understand our world, we are not all the same but not all that different.

Found this informative book at work today while manning the children‘s info desk. Great read for February‘s Black History Month!

Despite some accurate but misleadingly presented information (eg, on p 124, data about PhDs in the natural sciences), this book presents a compelling and accessible argument that systemic racism exists in the US and that it is intentional. I'm left with a few ideas for action, including supporting causes that seek to increase voter registration and turnout and promoting more equitable resource allocation in my area's public schools.

Harvey provides good recommendations for engaging young(er) white children in conversations about race and racism. Definitely some components to incorporate into talks with the kiddos. Likely most useful/relatable with younger kids, 10 and under.

I liked a lot of the points in this book- treat discussing race like any other developmental aspect of your children and engage with them early and often. Harvey provides anecdotes from her life, but my children and students are much older than hers and her suggestions for tweens and teens were sparse. Little meandering but good message.

I am a little surprised that this book hasn't received more attention. This is a really good overview on the system of racism in this country with some hands on idea to get involved and how to be part of a solution. Very appropriate for HS and college students.

Chrissyreadit I am blown away by the limited understanding of systemic poverty. 4y

I just started this yesterday and I think this is appropriate for high school or college... the book is set-up like a study/ discussion guide. Both of the authors are educators.
