Coldest Girl in Coldtown
Coldest Girl in Coldtown | Holly Black
"Coldtown was dangerous, Tana knew. A glamorous cage, a prison for the damned and anyone who wanted to party with them."Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. And once you pass through Coldtown's gates, you can never leave. One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

YA fantasy vampire novel with a unique premise, but I ultimately felt there was something missing!! Idk if it was just a bit too YA for me or if it‘s something else. I enjoyed the story, was intrigued where it was going, but ultimately felt a little underwhelmed by the end. 3/5

This didn‘t at all go where I was expecting at the start of the book, but I still enjoyed it. The plot was good but I wanted to get to know the characters better. I must admit that I got lost a few times too, but I did have a great time reading 😊

I'd love to see everyone's answer! Feel free to repost tag and share.

This question was inspired by the audiobook of The Coldest Girl I'm Coldtown by Holly Black. It has random spooky sounding music that makes it sound like something is coming. It just doesn't seem to make sense where it's placed. I think it would be really cool if it is saved and used at just the right moment.

#BookishAnswers

#RestingGrinchFace #wintergames @Julsmarshall

Julsmarshall I like music or sounds when it makes sense. In Bono‘s autobiography (which he reads himself) there are times that he sings and it really added to the experience. Sometimes, though, it pulls me out of the story. 12mo
RedxoHearts @Julsmarshall I agree. This one has "thriller" sounds but all of the times it's just a little off in timing. You're right it really can pull you out of the story 12mo
Sarahreadstoomuch The times it‘s done well is in between chapters (like Grapes of Wrath) or between essays (David Sedaris‘ Calypso). Otherwise it can take me out of a story. 12mo

I don‘t know why but I have some inner complex where I feel like audiobooks are not “real” enough when it comes to reading. Happily changing this inner narrative. Through so many mental health struggles physical reading has been tiring and challenging. Audiobooks are giving me life and making me feel like myself again. I‘m so glad they have brought me back to this world this last year. Driving and audio booking is now my favorite way to de stress.

Clwojick I find audiobooks help me get through all the chores I don‘t want to do. It makes exercising, laundry, and grocery shopping SO much easier. 2y
wanderinglynn Yes, I agree with @Clwojick – listening to audiobooks makes chores so much better. I‘ve also found that listening to books that I have previously read add a new dimension or new perspective to stories I love. And sometimes, with the right narrator, audiobooks are like meditation, taking me out of the swirling chaos of my brain & relaxing my mind. 2y
Amabear @Clwojick 100% agree. 2y
Amabear @wanderinglynn love it. I definitely am able to connect with some books via audiobook that I wouldn‘t otherwise. Also, the wrong narrator ruins everything 😂 2y
wanderinglynn Totally agree. The wrong narrator ruins it. 2y

I loooooooooved this book. Fell in love with the characters and the world- which was immersive and well built. The author fed details at just the right times, by the end you feel like you could exist in this world. A convincing fun dystopian- of the few vampire books Iv read this is a huge favorite. I wish there were more steamy scenes but the romance was stellar without anything over the top. Lots of blood. Thrilling. Not too gross. Reading was✨

Clwojick Love the name and the cover! Screenshot taken for when I need some bookish inspiration! 2y
Amabear @Clwojick 🙌🏻 I happened to finish it while driving at night on a cold foggy day and it was an amazing immersion 😂 2y
Cheshirecat913 I absolutely loved this book as well! I have been thinking about rereading it, but I also want to read some of her other books. 😆 2y

I'm using #adventrecommends to catch up on some reviews I didn't get to this year!

I was honestly surprised by how much I LOVED this book. I've been on a vampire kick lately, mostly classics, and I'm not super into post-apocalyptic stuff, but this thing got it's fangs into me early and I'm SO glad it didn't let go! This was addictive and sexy, and yet I feel like it also let you grapple with the horror. Highly recommend!! 💙🧛🏼‍♀️

This book has a great opening: the protagonist, Tana, wakes up in a bathtub to find that everyone at the party she attended the night before is dead. However, it goes downhill from there. I had such high hopes, but the plot meandered all over the place and I really just didn‘t care what happened to the characters.

Lindy It‘s been a while since I read this—I can‘t even remember if I finished it or not—but I remember being disappointed too. 3y

I love Holly Black. I love love her writing. This book I did not love. It‘s started out strong and but then totally lost me. Maybe it was the corny YA aspect of the main characters personality, idk. it was gritty and violent and a cool concept but slogged. Some parts I loved, other parts like the chapters from different timelines and POV were boring

My current look. Not pictured: my feet in both socks snd slippers under the blanket. 🤣🤣

Susanita This looks like me the winter I spent at my mom‘s in Oklahoma. The wind really does come sweeping down the plain, right into my bedroom, despite my stepfather‘s valiant attempts at mitigation. 4y
CocoReads @Susanita it‘s unpleasant. I‘ll be heading to my parents around lunchtime because they still have power plus a whole house generator if they lose power. Plus they have actual food-I had peanut butter for breakfast. Because I haven‘t been to the store yet. As it turns out, that‘s probably a good thing. 4y

My first Holly Black novel and it pulled no punches. For YA, this was gory, dark, and at times very bleak — exactly what a vampire story should be.

This was a dark and haunting tale, filled with blood and betrayal. Written in a style that blends past and present, the story unfolds piece by piece. It reveals broken and flawed characters, each with their own burdens from a tormented past. This isn‘t a book for those who like a light read. Taking on this experience is going to require a taste for horror.

Book 8 finished for #screamathon. 🎃 @4thhouseontheleft

This was a fun book about vampires, with some interesting changes to the typical vampire tale. Although I read lots of YA books, this one to me just didn't quite work. I'm sure a teen would disagree and love the teenage romance aspect, but it and the teen angst started to get on my nerves toward the end.

Okay I know I‘m likely in the minority, but this is the 2nd Holly Black book I‘ve read & I just can‘t quite get into it. I‘m 50% through this current read and thinking about bailing...

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I didn‘t love this either. Haven‘t tried any of her others (except maybe the first curse workers book - which was interesting but I haven‘t gotten around to reading the rest so...) 5y
TheBookKeepers @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I read Cruel Prince & didn‘t like it either. It wasn‘t awful....just more like “eh” IMO. I know many ppl love her books, so maybe it‘s just me 😅 5y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TheBookKeepers, nahhh, I think she‘s probably one of those authors I would have connected with if I was a teen when I first read her books... I feel meh about so many popular authors (Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Sarah J. Maas) and I‘m becoming more ok about it 😂 5y
Johanna414 I struggle with her books - I usually really like the beginnings and then lose interest a third or halfway through and never finish them. The Cruel Prince is the only one of hers I‘ve finished so far, and I didn‘t love it. 5y
TheBookKeepers Good to know I‘m not alone in this YA world! 🖤. I feel more validated in my bailing of this lol! @Johanna414 5y
