Girling Up
Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart and Spectacular | Mayim Bialik
23 posts | 16 read | 30 to read
Mayim Bialik, star of The Big Bang Theory, puts her Ph.D. to work as she talks to teens about the science of growing up and getting ahead. A must-have book for all teenage girls. Growing up as a girl in today's world is no easy task. Juggling family, friends, romantic relationships, social interests and school...sometimes it feels like you might need to be a superhero to get through it all! But really, all you need is little information. Want to know why your stomach does a flip-flop when you run into your crush in the hallway? Or how the food you put in your body now will affect you in the future? What about the best ways to stop freaking out about your next math test? Using scientific facts, personal anecdotes, and wisdom gained from the world around us, Mayim Bialik, the star of The Big Bang Theory, shares what she has learned from her life and her many years studying neuroscience to tell you how you grow from a girl to a woman biologically, psychologically and sociologically. Want to be strong? Want to be smart? Want to be spectacular? You can! Start by reading this book.

I picked this up on a whim at the library. This would make an excellent gift for especially a pre-teen or teen. Everything from chromosomes, puberty, menstruation, birth control, nutrition and mental health is covered in a manner like an older sister giving the goods on all the questions a young female might have. This is the first book I've seen that tells it like it is to be female and doesn't come off like a cold textbook.

There is some good information here, and I like Mayim Bialik overall, but there are a lot of problems with this book. 2.5 stars, maybe? I would say it is best for children of conservative parents. It is presented in a very binary way, with lip service paid to trans people, and excuses for “boys will be boys”. It does talk about biology matter-of-factly, but also addresses the need for “modesty”. I won‘t be passing this on to my kids.

Weaponxgirl I found her comments about the #meto movement when it first started happening problematic which kinda put me off her. A pity as she is quite inspiring in other ways. 6y

I love this book! I'm in my 30s and don't have any daughters, so I'm not the target audience, but loved it all the same. Mayim Bialik is Strong, Smart and Spectacular and I'm thrilled she's helping girls and women realise they are too.

Reading to ready the little miss for entering double-digit years. So far, this looks like a good book to present to a young lady. I‘m especially eager to endorse it since Bialik thrives on science. Break those stereotypes, Amy Farrah Fowler! 😉

While I️ have great respect for Bialik, this book didn‘t live up to my expectations. She covers topics such as puberty, healthy eating, dating, and stress, but doesn‘t add anything new to the conversation. The tone is geared toward children and the content can be found easily on websites or blogs. I️ would have preferred a memoir of her own experiences and opinions.

This would be a great book to share with a preteen girl that is just learning who she is. It did have some very clinical terms but still was easy to read.

I enjoyed Bialik's holistic approach to helping young women learn about the process of growing up. In addition to the info about body changes I remember from such books when I was a kid, she addresses things like dealing with stress and making intentional choices about your values, what's important to you, and how to live the life you invision for yourself as you grow from childhood into adulthood. Would rec to a tween girl if I knew any.

This is a must read for me -- mom of an 8 year old -- before my daughter reaches the age to read this herself. And no, I don't know what age that will be. Time will tell!

I'm not the target audience for this book, nor am I in the position to share it with someone who is. But I found Girling Up to be an accessible look at growing up for young girls. I appreciated the repeated declarations that there is nothing wrong with being different.

christineandbooks What ages would you recommend it for? 8y
dariazeoli @christineandbooks Well, she talks about sex & puberty, so I would leave it to parents to determine how old - mainly because I have no children in my life to judge the right age for that. 8y

This could be the book we all wished we had when we were -- what? -- 11 or so. Very interested in seeing what Bialik has to say. After a quick flip through the book, I'm feeling pretty positive; I like the sidebars, boxes, and illustrations. @penguinrandomhouse

tpixie Cool!! Man - I need to fly to NYC!! I disagree strongly with her opinion on childhood immunizations, but this looks like a good read. She's also great on the Big Bang theory! 8y

Mayim Bialik has a new book coming out. It looks awesome. I love her and want to be her friend. She should call me. Except we both kind of have some social anxiety. So maybe she should text me. Yes, she should definitely text me. It's available for preorder. https://www.amazon.com/Girling-Up-Strong-Smart-Spectacular/dp/0399548602/ref=sr_...

vivastory She's really interesting, her father wrote Julio Cortazar after the first English translation of "Hopscotch" & Cortazar wrote him back 8y
Laura317 Love her. However, she's way too smart for me. Can I be the ditzy friend? 8y
