“Grace for President” by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by LeUyen Pham

This timely story centers around Grace who is inspired to become the first female US President. It follows her on her journey to become class president. Along with diverse representation, the book centers around the process of the electoral college. This would be an excellent shared reading to accompany Social Studies election content.

RF. SR. #ucflae3414sp21

ToddSalerno Putting real world topics, such as political and election content, into stories that are easy to comprehend for students will help them (ESOL 30. Encourage the use of diagrams and drawings to identify concepts). Attached are worksheets that could accompany a SS lesson to solidify understanding of a topic. Inspiring book to show girls that they can dream big and become the POTUS one day. I also appreciated that this book covers the electoral college and how it works. I do wish that this book showed both sides either shaking hands or congratulating each other at the end. We need to show kids that integrity still exists and should be at the forefront in politics today.

I really liked this one! And, frustratingly, it feels so true to life and white male privilege. Grace campaigns hard, volunteers, makes change happen before she is elected, and it is still almost a tie between her and the white boy who does very little campaigning because he thinks he will win because there are more boys in the class who he assumes will only vote for another boy. ⬇️⬇️

alisiakae This is a pretty good example of how privilege works: Grace has to work twice as hard and gives everything, and only just barely pulls out ahead. 5y

The awesome thing about this book is it explains that electoral college. The EL strategies I would use are (2),(3),(29) and (46). Grace for President a RF by Kelly DiPucchio is a fantastic picture book that highlights political areas such as an election. This story is about two students who campaign against each other until polling time comes around. I would use a RA strategy for this book as I‘d really like for the students to hear the pronunciations of new words properly. I would be sure to introduce the vocabulary prior to the RA which would support UDL 2.1 and EL 5.

Grace for President is a RF picture book. It is a great book for young readers to help them understand the election process. I think it is great for a readers theater in a classroom. Having students understand our history is also very important and to recognize what has happened in the past. I would love to add this book to my classroom library. #ucflae3414f17

MeghanW EL Strategy 2: promote cooperation. UDL Strategy 6.2: support planning and strategy development. This RF, NYTBS contains factual information and is great for RA. Grace thinks that it's crazy that there has never been a woman president, so she decides that she'd like to be president one day. Her teacher uses this as an opportunity to teach about running for president and the electoral college through an election simulation at their school. The message that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to is important for all children!

CaseyL https://www.islma.org/pdf/monarch/Grace%20for%20President.pdf this resource offers discussion questions that can be used during RA. EL 28 provide biographies of significant men and women can be used to highlight people in power/presidents from around the world and their "election" process. UDL 1.2 offer alternatives for auditory information can be used with the picture book being easily visible as you RA. #ucflae3414f17 7y
Dbenford Wow, looks like you have a lot of different activities and lessons that can go with this book. This book is definitely one to empower our young female readers. I liked your EL standard for this book, I'm sure you could not only use that standard for your ELL students but with the rest of your future classroom as well. Great post. 7y
DrSpalding Casey, excellent job aligning number 38 providing biographies as your EL strategy. This works for all biographies and to understand that providing them to second-language learners can be impactful, is something all of your peers need to know. Well done. 7y

Grace For President by Kelly S. DiPucchio is a wonderful, empowering read! This story is about a girl, Grace, who is astounded to find out there has never been a girl president before. Grace is determined to become president at Woodrow Wilson Elementary! This story teaches students to be bold and never give up on the goals they have. I hope my reviews has pushed some of you to read this adorable, realistic fiction book! #UCFLAE3414F17

Sabrinac I would use the ESOL strategy number 4, which is to link the lesson topic to students' prior knowledge. I would have my students discuss the background knowledge they have on elections. 7y
Sabrinac I would use UDL 8.1, Heighten salience of goals and objectives to teach my students to always follow their dreams and never give up on a goal! 7y
Sabrinac Grace for president is also a New York Times Best Seller, another great reason to read this book!!! 7y

Karlee.Diamond This is such a great overview, and resourceful use of strategies! I have never read the book, but I see it every week floating around Dr. Spalding's class! Maybe I'll give it a read! 7y
Sabrinac @Karlee.Diamond Thank you so much!! You should pick it up and read it one day for sure(: 7y
DrSpalding It is worth the read. Your character map resource is a great one to get students thinking about what it takes to be a quality leader. I must say, it warms my heart to see these posts being influential in your peers' decisions to pick up certain books. You are making a difference!❤️📚 7y

This RF book has a great ending and tells young girls and boys that everyone is equal. I fell in love with the main character, Grace and how humble she was. This would be a great read near Election Day and always teaches some social studies terms. I found this book on read aloud on YouTube! Could be great for ESOL students ://youtu.be/kXCP64CGmXg #ucflae3414su17

melissaallam This is on my "to read" list! Definitely great for election season. I could see many subjects brought into this lesson. You could have a mock vote (social studies) and you could graph the results (math)! 7y
SamanthaPuglisi I used this book as part of a unit plan in my Social Studies class! The unit was on citizenship and focused a lot on voting. It's so great for breaking down the complicated concepts involved with voting and making it fun for kids! 7y
DrSpalding Wonderful peer comments. @Angiepuc be sure you include a website that extends the topic or provides a classroom application. 7y

Grace is appalled when she realizes that a woman has never been president, so she decides she's the one for the job. She is a terrific candidate, up against a kid who is resting on his security in his popularity. This books explains the ridiculous electoral college, and it is very matter of fact about it, not presenting it as a good or a bad thing, just as what is. But I'm still convinced it is archaic. A great picture book.

In the RF, Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio, Grace becomes interested in running for class president. She soon realizes that it may be harder than she expected to win. Read to find out if her school thinks she's the right person for the job. For ESOL accommodation go to this link: https://youtu.be/kXCP64CGmXg #ucflae3414sp17
