Swing It, Sunny
Swing It, Sunny | Jennifer L Holm
20 posts | 28 read | 3 to read
Summer's over and it's time for Sunny Lewin to enter the strange and unfriendly hallways of . . . middle school. When her Gramps calls her from Florida to ask how she's doing, she always tells him she's fine. But the truth? Sunny is NOT having the best time. Not only is the whole middle school thing confusing . . . but life at home is confusing, too. Sunny misses her brother Dale, who's been sent to boarding school. But when Dale comes back, she STILL misses him . . . because he's changed. Luckily Sunny's got her best friend and a mysterious new neighbor on her side . . . because she is NOT going let all this confusion get her down. Instead, she's going to remain Sunny-side up!

The second book in this series follows up on Sunny‘s brother in rehab. I followed up with the rest of the series today. These are great graphic novels for kids and very nostalgic for those raised in the late 70s/early 80s.

Johanna414 These are popular with the middle school girls in my library ❤ 3y

This was a fun sequel to Sunny Side Up. I don‘t think it was good. It was straightforward instead of jumping back and forth in time like the previous book. It spans a year and the major conflict is her brother trying to get help for his addiction and bad behavior. But that is the underlying depressing story. It‘s also about a new neighbor moving in, learning something new like band flags, and making new friends.

This is the second book of the wonderful character Sunny. I love that it is dated back in the Seventies because it brings so many great memories when I grew up back then. Plus it's in PA which is even more awesome! Hello flashback of a trip to the Poconos! Anyway, Sunny is back in school and hanging with her friend but still misses her brother who is in boarding school. Always a good story right til the end. 4 stars.

Didn‘t realize that this was book 2 in the Sunny series, so I‘ll have to find that one soon!! Other than that, cute book about a girl figuring out life, having fun, and being a kid 😊

Loved this sequel to Sunny Side Up where Sunny & whole family are coping with Dale‘s absence. Almost no focus on her academics during first year of middle school. I assume Sunny is one of those average kids who makes good grades, but flies under teacher radar. Instead we see family dynamic rich with 1970s pop culture: Brady Bunch, flag twirling, Steve Austin, and Gilligan‘s Island. Sunny learns how to cope with situations you have no control over.

Even though this is set in 1976-77, quite a few things were still around when I was a kid a few years later, like General Hospital, making latch hook potholders, and the decorative plaster deer my grandparents had in their yard like the ones in the picture. Sunny also has an uncle who lost an arm in a farming accident - same thing happened to my uncle.

I hope this series continues so that we can see how things turn out for her family.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I remember that opening to General Hospital! 👍 7y

Book 3 for #deweys24hourreadathon #readathon @DeweysReadathon is another to see if it can go into my classroom.

Peddler410 What did you decide? 7y
youngreadrshelf @Peddler410 I think it will. It does have a story line about her brother who is at boarding school for his poor choices (bad friends and drugs), but I think that it is well handled. 7y

The kid's graphic novel reading continues. This one took a whole 30 minutes to read. It was a nice follow up to Sunny Side Up.

Swing it Sunny is just such a cute graphic novel. I love the relationship between Sunny and her grandfather. Her brother is going through a rough spot and she tries to reach out to him when he is sent off to military school. A great graphic novel!

This started out REALLY disjointed and seemed like just a collection of Very Seventies Things. It did cohere into a couple of storylines by about halfway through, but I think the first Sunny book was stronger overall.

I'm already anxious for Jennifer Holm's newest book to be published. September seems very far away.
