The Ninth Rain (The Winnowing Flame Trilogy 1)
The Ninth Rain (The Winnowing Flame Trilogy 1) | Jen Williams
Jen Williams, acclaimed author of The Copper Cat trilogy, featuring THE COPPER PROMISE, THE IRON GHOST and THE SILVER TIDE, returns with the first in a blistering new trilogy. 'An original new voice in heroic fantasy' Adrian Tchaikovsky The great city of Ebora once glittered with gold. Now its streets are stalked by wolves. Tormalin the Oathless has no taste for sitting around waiting to die while the realm of his storied ancestors falls to pieces - talk about a guilt trip. Better to be amongst the living, where there are taverns full of women and wine. When eccentric explorer, Lady Vincenza 'Vintage' de Grazon, offers him employment, he sees an easy way out. Even when they are joined by a fugitive witch with a tendency to set things on fire, the prospect of facing down monsters and retrieving ancient artefacts is preferable to the abomination he left behind. But not everyone is willing to let the Eboran empire collapse, and the adventurers are quickly drawn into a tangled conspiracy of magic and war. For the Jure'lia are coming, and the Ninth Rain must fall...

Yesterday‘s book & beer pairing involved THE NINTH RAIN by Jen Williams and a Merry & Bright Cranberry Lager from Railway City Brewing Co out of ON. The beer was good but a little sweet for my palate (it promises, and delivers, breadiness), and I‘m still undecided on the book. It came highly recommended, but it‘s taken me a really long time to connect with it. I hope it‘ll start to snowball as it hits the back half.

I looked back on 2021 and it was not a great reading year overall. But, I noticed I only read 2 adult fantasy novels! I think I was often feeling slumpish last year, so I would go for the shorter books. But that probably also lead to a lot of slumping because I was reading to read a book and not necessarily to enjoy it.

So, I read The Ninth Rain to start 2022 and it was excellent. I loved it. I cannot wait for the sequels to arrive in the mail!

1. Really liking it so far!
2. Reading! I slumped for most of 2021. Have better hopes for 2022!
3. I kept my goals small. Read 52 books, read some series, read 10 books I bought in 2021, and read 1 book a month recommended by a friend. I wanted to keep things manageable!

Trying to use Litsy in 2022! Happy New Year!

1. The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams, Ghost Rider by Neil Peart (audio), and The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie (got overlooked in December).

2. The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams is my first fresh start of 2022, but might not be the first book I finish.

3. Saga returns! There are others, but so excited this is coming back!!

This was an excellent epic fantasy. With hints of fae, witches, vampires and really creepy monsters. There are also sections which remind me of Princess Mononoke, one of my favorite movies of all time. Book 1 of a trilogy. 5⭐️

This high fantasy trilogy needs more love. With vampires and witches and monster plants and aliens from outer space, there‘s a lot going on but it all weaves together into a fantastic story!

Loved it.!!!
Great book for the lovers of Fantasy novels. Noon and Tor are amazing characters and we still haven't seen the end of Vintages part to play in all of this. I am really looking forward to the next book in this epic fantasy series.

Today's focus, I think. Once I'm caught up with my #bookblanket... which I should totally update you all on with a quick progress pic. I actually got way behind on making motifs and joining them, so it should actually be bigger, but you'll definitely get the idea now!

Oops, I have not read the first 10 chapters in time for the #WyrdandWonder discussion posts! I have started on that tonight, but wow, 10 chapters is quite a chunk of book. I'm about 50 pages in, and quite prepared to adore Vintage as a character.

I missed the relative date at the start of the prologue and was rather confused by the switch to almost-the-present and then finally the actual present. Anyone else always ignore dates in novels?!

Clare-Dragonfly Always! I skip right over them or forget them even when I intend to pay attention. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y
shanaqui @Clare-Dragonfly Yes! I mean, they're numbers so they never stick in my head anyway, but... Although I do like that in this book it's relative dating rather than dates in a made up calendar. 6y
littlelionlynnet I‘m so horrible at it, sometimes I‘m, like, 5 chapters in before I even notice it HAS dates. 😅 So you‘re definitely not alone! 6y
imyril Over the past few years I've become totally blind to dates in novels - it made the first edition of Rosewater almost impenetrable :) ahem, sorry our Read-alongs are so uneven - Trail of Lightning was way shorter than I realised and The Ninth Rain takes no prisoners (...tho that seems appropriate for the Jure'lia ;) 6y

Yep, head over heels for Vintage tbh 😍😂🦇🔥

Lucy_Anywhere The banter between Vintage and Tor ❤ 6y
imyril @Lucy_Anywhere I love the way she just darlings him into everything and doesn‘t bat an eyelid at his sulking! ...and the bit where he damages his coat and flounces 😂🤣😂 6y

Happy Wednesday, folks! I finished up The Ninth Rain last night. While I wasn't completely sold on the premise, I did end up really enjoying this high fantasy. With vampires, witches, monster plants, and aliens from outer space, there's a lot going on but it kinda works!

Jen Williams‘s fantasy novel (the first in a trilogy) incorporates innovative twists on traditional fantasy elements (including vampires, witchcraft and religious oppression) and neatly incorporates a science fiction element to its antagonists, which I found refreshing. However there are some pacing problems (especially the info dumps), Vintage‘s mannerisms were overdone for me and I had quibbles about the ending but would check out the sequel.

What a surprise this was. It's certainly different than just epic fantasy. I love the world and the peoples especially the Fell-witches and I hope we get to see more of them in the sequel. The story was really immersive and I couldn't put it down.

Yesterday's #bookmail brought me this delicious behemoth. While I still need to finish her Copper Cat trilogy, I loved Copper Promise so much I knew I needed this in line on my actual TBR shelf. Especially seeing what they are doing on her US covers, I wanted to get this gorgeous UK cover before something changed. See - I can make excuses for ANY book purchase!! 😁
And FYI: this PB is larger than many of my HCs at 6x9 and 550-ish pages 💃🏻💃🏻
