The Cutaway: A Novel | Christina Kovac
27 posts | 17 read | 13 to read
The Cutaway draws you into the tangled world of corruption and cover-up as a young television producer investigates the disappearance of a beautiful Georgetown lawyer in this stunning psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Paula Hawkins and Gillian Flynn. When brilliant TV news producer Virginia Knightly receives a disturbing MISSING notice on her desk related to the disappearance of a beautiful young attorney, she cant seem to shake the image from her head. Despite skepticism from her colleagues, Knightly suspects this ambitious young lawyer may be at the heart of something far more sinister, especially since she was last seen leaving an upscale restaurant after a domestic dispute. Yet, as the only woman of power at her station, Knightly quickly finds herself investigating on her own. Risking her career, her life, and perhaps even her own sanity, Knightly dives deep into the dark underbelly of Washington, DC business and politics in an investigation that will drag her mercilessly through the inextricable webs of corruption that bind the press, the police, and politics in our nations capital. Harkening to dark thrillers such as Gone Girl, Luckiest Girl Alive, and Big Little Lies, The Cutaway is a striking debut that will haunt you long after you reach the last page.

This thriller is pretty fast-paced, but also fairly predictable. There were also a few side plots that took up way too much space but didn't advance the story at all other than to distract the reader from the mystery.

Just getting started on this, but into it so far. It seems like a solid mystery/thriller. I love Litsy, but I think the so-so rating results in an unfair shake to titles sometimes. I get being lukewarm on a book, but 33% is a failing grade!! This poor book probably studied so hard and just had a bad day! It didn't sleep the night before! It respectfully requests extra credit.

Clwojick 😂😂😂 I forgive the failing mark, and stack it simply based on your hilarious review. 😂😂😂 7y

Christina Kovac's debut thriller is a solid affair that utilises her own experience in news media to provide a compelling account of newsroom politics, economics and competing egos but neither the romance element nor Virginia's troubled history interested me enough and the mystery element itself didn't feature the victim enough to care about the outcome and is hampered by a limited list of suspects, which makes the result predictable.

Started this last week and couldn't really get into it, but maybe I can finish it in my last 5 hours of #24in48...

I needed a palate cleanser after having my heart ripped out by The Hate U Give and this certainly fit the bill. It's marketed for fans of The Good Wife and The Newsroom but I think it's more for fans of Scandal and that Piper Perabo/Daniel Sunjata show that just got cancelled. Completely ridiculous at times but ultimately soapy fun.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Not the best 'thriller' that I've read. I enjoyed the book throughout, but definitely did not care for the ending. Makes you feel cut off.. likes where's the rest?! Where are the answers?? Eh.

This was ok but not as good or surprising as I'd hoped.

On to the next book for #litsypartyofone

The #litsypartyofone continues, with a cider and more HGTV (the Blue Jays game is depressing me so I had to change the channel).

Hope you all are having a fun Friday!

This book has a promising premise, but it was super slow (I certainly wouldn't call it a thriller) and required far too much suspension of disbelief for me. Compelling enough (in a few key moments of action and intrigue) that I finished listening, but I had a tough time staying focused on it. I did appreciate the subtle recurring theme of women's experiences of fear (felt accurate to my own experiences), but on the whole this was a disappointment.

Cinfhen Thanks for sharing! 8y
Bakingbookworm I'm struggling with it too. It's just not grabbing me at all and has little suspense. 8y

I really enjoyed this! Really gripping! (Plus I loved the behind-the-scenes look at the D.C. journalism scene!)

☠ Not my cup of tea. It took waaay too much effort to finish this book and it seemed more of a chore than anything else.

Oddly enough, after I returned feedback on this #NetGalley, Atria, its publisher, declined my other request. Oh well.

readinginthedark 😕More likely to pick people who five-star all their books? 8y
athorne @readinginthedark Perhaps. The email they sent said my profile was lacking certain info, but everything they listed is clearly on my profile. 8y
readinginthedark @EMJenkinson That sucks. I always just get a generic list of reasons why my request may have been denied. 8y

Managed to finish it somehow. Seriously, I shouldn't have to get 3/4 of the way through a book before It's of any interest.

Lindy I agree. I wouldn't normally stick with a book that wasn't grabbing me but I distinctly remember one that I had to (because I was on a judging panel) and it took about 216 pages before I liked it. 8y
athorne @Lindy I nearly dropped it, but my conscience wouldn't allow me to. 8y
MyNamesParadise Dang it was that bad? Ill cancel my hold at the library! 8y

Lindy @EMJenkinson Ha! That old guilty conscience, eh? I'm glad I'm not bothered. 😉 8y
athorne @MyNamesParadise A very small portion of the book actually deals with the crime that has taken place, and its toward the end of it. It feels more focused on romance than thriller/suspense. The last 25% was the best part of it, and even then I wasn't overly impressed. The author was a reporter, and it's clear in the writing that that is the only side of an investigation she knows - I've read more convincing crime thrillers. 8y
athorne @Lindy Yup. It's like free food. Must finish. 8y
MyNamesParadise @EMJenkinson ewwww romance. Thanks for the heads up! 8y
athorne @MyNamesParadise No problem. 8y

Reading at work again. Is it okay to drop a NetGalley? This book is horrible and not at all what it is marketed as. Rather than a thriller, it's basically a corny, self-centered romance with whiny men. I have been force feeding myself this book for too long.

JacintaMCarter I have this one but haven't started it yet. Now I'm not sure I want to. 8y
athorne @JacintaMCarter I kid you not, the missing woman is literally a background detail. It's all about the main character, her ex, and a co-worker with a little bit of cliche missing person in between. There is literally nothing new in it. 8y
