Moab Is My Washpot | Stephen Fry
13 posts | 22 read | 12 to read
A number one bestseller in Britain, Stephen Fry's astonishingly frank, funny, wise memoir is the book that his fans everywhere have been waiting for. Since his PBS television debut in the Blackadder series, the American profile of this multitalented writer, actor and comedian has grown steadily, especially in the wake of his title role in the film Wilde, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination, and his supporting role in A Civil Action. Fry has already given readers a taste of his tumultuous adolescence in his autobiographical first novel, The Liar, and now he reveals the equally tumultuous life that inspired it. Sent to boarding school at the age of seven, he survived beatings, misery, love affairs, carnal violation, expulsion, attempted suicide, criminal conviction and imprisonment to emerge, at the age of eighteen, ready to start over in a world in which he had always felt a stranger. One of very few Cambridge University graduates to have been imprisoned prior to his freshman year, Fry is a brilliantly idiosyncratic character who continues to attract controversy, empathy and real devotion. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I enjoyed some of this because of his tone and humour but there were a few too many asides (some of which I enjoyed but some of which I glanced over).
In the end, I was a bit distracted.... it could also be due to the stuff that is happening in the world...
Finished this for #doublespin

You know when someone says “I had a weird dream” and you inwardly groan because you know you‘re about to be bored beyond belief. This is the only man I would eagerly listen to, if he said that because he can make anything and I mean anything sound (quite) interesting. The polymath and genius that is Stephen Fry. #strangetitle I thought for a memoir, it‘s a biblical reference #bibliomaynia

Pickpick

As a fan of Stephen Fry from his days of playing Jeeves in the Wooster and Jeeves series with Hugh Laurie, I thought I‘d check out his autobiography. This book covers his formative years, mostly spent in various boarding schools. At times he tends to ramble and often goes off on tangents, but overall I did enjoy his look back at his many rakish exploits and growing pains.

Aw Stephen you poor blighter! In this first volume of his autobiography Fry tells the story of his first eighteen years - doing a lot of analysis and berating himself for the troubles of his youth. Because he was a bright and privileged kid but also unhappy and with a compulsion to steal - that ultimately lead to being expelled and even doing a short stint of prison time while on remand. He‘s brutally honest, and this is a smart compelling read.

CarolynM Love Stephen❤️ 5y
DrexEdit All three of his autobiographies are worthwhile reading. 5y

#weeklyforecast @Cinfhen

I‘ve got Proust on audio, Giant Days for a little R&R, Stephen Fry‘s autobiography and Tracks which I‘ve been meaning to read for ages. I love Louise Erdrich and Stephen Fry so I know I‘ve got a good week ahead of me 😊

TrishB Great plan 👍🏻 5y
Cathythoughts Enjoy 😉 😊 5y
Billypar I'll look out for your Erdrich review - I haven't read Tracks and my brain has been puzzling over which one of hers to read next. 5y

I'm a bit at a loss what to say. Stephen Fry was a liar and a thief and I found the book's content more horrifying than entertaining. I have Fry's second autobiography on my TBR stack, but I will wait a bit before start that.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😱 that‘s not good! Great review though! 5y
PickwickPlockPlock @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It wasn't what I had expected 😶 5y
Sarah83 Which time did you review in this book? 5y

PickwickPlockPlock @Sarah83 The book covers his childhood until he turned 20. He was arrested and convicted for theft with 18. 5y
Sarah83 I read the one after that. I think, he meets Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson in it. It's quite nice. 5y
PickwickPlockPlock @Sarah83 Maybe I find it so depressing because it ends just when he seems to turn his life around, but that's only a couple of pages at the end. So the next one is more what I expected going in? Good to know. 5y
Sarah83 The next one is funnier... Going to theatres, to castings, living in different parts of England 🤷 it is a bit too long, but not so depressing. 5y
Severnmeadows There‘s something about him that annoys me when I see him on TV 😊...however, I love his (edited) 5y
PickwickPlockPlock @Severnmeadows As a German I sometimes saw him in movies or (scripted) tv shows, but from that I can't really judge his personality. Thanks for tagging the book, but I'm not really a fan of poetry 🙂 5y

#CarryOnMyWaywardSon #MarchIntoThe70s

Steven Fry certainly gives the impression that his father considers him a wayward son

Cinfhen I recently bought a book by this author that of course I haven‘t read yet. I scanned the first few pages and was quickly captivated. 6y
PickwickPlockPlock I have this at home, but haven't read it yet. 6y
gradcat @Cinfhen @PickwickPlockPlock Stephen Fry is sooo brilliant! Did you ever see “QI”? Omigod, he‘s really smart & just a brilliant writer! 6y

PickwickPlockPlock @gradcat No, I have only heard of it (I'm not a Brit). I read one of his books, saw him in a few things and listened to his Harry Potter audiobooks. But I saw an interview with him in the Hobbit behind-the-scenes material, and he really seems to be something else. 6y
CarolynM @gradcat @PickwickPlockPlock @Cinfhen I think A Bit of Fry and Laurie is the funniest sketch comedy program ever - my husband and I quote it at one another constantly (our kids roll their eyes) 6y
gradcat Agreed. Plus, Jeeves & Wooster...omigosh...love them both! 6y

1. The Simpsons.

2. Moab is My Washpot by Stephen Fry.

3. Steak. I am not a vegan but it is just a chore to chew through all that meat.

TheRiehlDeal Loved The Simpsons as a kid, but I've grown old of it now. And I agree on steak. It takes forever to chew thoroughly. 7y
Seshat Yeah, @TheRiehlDeal I actually grew to love Futurama much more. I still like The Simpsons but not as much by any means. 7y

I loved this #memorablememoir The audiobook has Fry's narration, which is wonderful. The physical book has photographs and this document printed in it. #booktober
