My current view in Bergen Norway. So beautiful here but we head out tomorrow. Reading this book that takes place in Copenhagen which was our first stop on our trip…. Love reading about place I know or have been to… anyone else?

dabbe My view was quite similar from years ago! Wonder if we were in the same hotel? 🤩 7mo
Jerdencon @dabbe we were at the scsndic forget Bergen right across from the fish market. 7mo
dabbe @Jerdencon I think we were farther north since the fish market was south from us. What a beautiful place! Fjords everywhere! 🤩 7mo

I really like the characters in this series but I found this installment a little too disturbing and gory for my tastes.

Like montaldo the other week here is Another series where I read book 1 years ago and have only just read this bk 2 & wonder why I left it so long. Morek is a great character who in this story has to investigate a historic murder in which highly influential members of Danish society appear suspects. Definitely a very readable story which twisted and turned. I plan to get to bk 3 a lot sooner.

Book 4 of my staycation is complete! This is book 2 in the Department Q series, set in Denmark. A quick-moving police procedural, which was way darker than book 1! Adler-Olsen does a good job of sprinkling humor throughout the story to balance out the darker portions of the plot. I legitimately laughed out loud a few times! 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I enjoyed the addition of Rose in this book, but to be honest I found I didn‘t really care about the crimes investigated in this one and lacked endearing characters. This was very long winded in places. To be honest somewhere between so so and a pick. Usual issues a bit long winded and a lack of pace, tension and good dialogue that takes actions forward. A good editor is needed.

First book finished for #24B4Monday. 3rd boom for #Midyearruah

Andrew65 At 4 hrs 43 mins for #24B4Monday. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Nice review! These books definitely need a new editor! 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks. Felt a bit more readable than the first but need a better case to investigate. 4y

EadieB @Andrew65 I agree! Not a very interesting case. 4y
Clwojick Hope your next book is better! ♥️ 4y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 basically agree!! 4y
gradcat I disagree, of course, as there was only one Dept. Q book that I didn‘t like, and it‘s the tagged one. I do wish you guys would get to read something that you like instead of having to trudge through these that you don‘t like.... ♥️ 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat I wouldn‘t say I dislike them but just could be better and shorter. I think Rose did improve it from book 1 so hopefully the books will improve. Just feel pacier and shorter would be better. Also this storyline never really engaged me. Once I commit to something I like to see it through 😂 Hopefully they improve. 4y
Andrew65 @Clwojick Thanks 🤞 4y

Crazeedi @Andrew65 you know I'm right there too, working on one now!! 4y
Tove_Reads I love the three main characters, and I understand that cold cases are slower action to begin with, but I still wish for a better pace and more action. 4y
gradcat @EadieB @Andrew65 @Crazeedi @Tove_Reads I‘m glad you‘re liking it so far, Andrew. I agree with Eadie & Tove: the characters are what‘s best about these books. I do think Tove has a point about the pacing. Diane, I hope you like these books...which one are you reading? ♥️ 4y
Andrew65 @gradcat Totally agree with @Tove_Reads more action, pace, tension and dialogue needed. 4y

Great book,great story. I'm enjoying this series now that I'm finally getting to it! @Andrew65 @gradcat @EadieB @AnneCecilie @Tove_Reads @Butterfinger
Here's the rotten thing, I picked up the next book in the series "A Conspiracy of Faith " and the cover is correct, but the inside is this book I just read!!! Whaaaat? Has that ever happened to anyone? It's a hardback book, book 2 under the cover of book 3

Crazeedi So I just ordered book 3 5y
Butterfinger That sounds crazy!! 5y
Crazeedi @Butterfinger I know, I thought my eyes were misreading! 5y

Butterfinger I will have to order the last Lars Kepler. It was in transit when the libraries closed. I hate that happened to you. 5y
Crazeedi @Butterfinger I have his most recent one, victim 2117 on my kindle, I got it as an ARC, not sure which it is in the series so I think I have a ways to go 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi This is the best website for authors and their books:

https://www.fantasticfiction.com/a/jussi-adler-olsen/

Can you cancel your order as I have mailed book 3 to you this morning!
(edited) 5y
Tove_Reads What? 🙁 5y
Andrew65 I need to see what I can get hold of without the library. Shocking about that book! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I always use fantastic fiction too. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 How are you doing? How many children are you caring for? 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB oh no!!! Just saw this and I think the book is on it's way, I will donate a copy to library or if anyone on litsy needs I can pass on. I should have known you would think of me, you are so kind💖 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 it was a real shock! I had to look at the book several times, I though maybe I was hallucinating, since my mind has been so scattered lately anyway, lol. I've never seen a book with a different cover. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I meant a cover that wasnt the book. But now I'm going to take the library cover off in am and see if it's just a library cover on the wrong book. Now that my brain is working I bet it might just be a mismatched cover/book 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB thanks for the website! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Fine most of the intense stress now over as things are in place. Another Senior Leader sent me packing at 3.00 yesterday to go and get some rest. Around about 20 children accessing and 100 meals available a day for very vulnerable children, and delivering lunch where very vulnerable self isolating. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Glad to hear you've got everything up and running. Very amazing but then I am not surprised. Can't believe we are living like this. I'm having trouble concentrating so my reading is not going well. Hopefully things will get better soon. 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB same for me Eadie, concentration is shot! Hope you are doing ok today, hugs 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi I‘m feeling a bit worn out today. I have to get myself together and do the things I need to do and try to get back to some normalcy. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB It is affecting all our reading, think we need to get back into a routine of normalcy and balance. We‘ve got this and can do it! Always here if want to talk 😊👍 @Crazeedi (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Thanks Andrew! I am reading the Veste book (US Title is The Silence) and working very hard to concentrate. (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB I've felt the same for over a week, seem to be sleeping more, no energy. I must say I have been reading a bit more though 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB @Andrew65 @Butterfinger so I checked the crazy book, someone switched the dust jacket and sent the absent one with the next books cover I ordered, or it was maybe one you sent me Eadie? I cant remember. 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi Where do you order your books from? If you find your invoice. You could exchange it for a later book like the 4th book as you will now have 2 copies of the 3rd book. If its a library book, chances are it came from me. (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB it's a library book. I'm going to check my book orders to be sure. I think I have book 4 already too, so I'll see. Maybe someone will want to read this series and I'll have book 2 and 3 for them! 5y
BookishMe In view of respecting free speech and her choice to support, I won't comment further about someone who doesn't deserve my time or energy. I am sorry there's so much helplessness there right now. Things will surely get better. We all can only hope and stay responsible. 5y
BookishMe Agree its not necessary to be triggered over opposing viewpoints esp on a platform where the priority is BOOKS and Reading 5y
Crazeedi @BookishMe exactly, I really appreciate you saying that 5y
Crazeedi @BookishMe it's a very hard time and everyone's on edge, I do understand that little things are going to touch people off. That's what makes it so important to give each other respect. My dad always said if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything. Thank for being a voice of reason my friend❤ 5y
BookishMe @Crazeedi your father's wise words is my mantra too. It has inevitably gotten personal in the post, but fervently hope not ugly nor divisive. I agree we need to be more understanding in these times. It's so hard for so many suffering tho. I didn't want to ruffle feathers as well, so no need to voice out every thought. Glad to know the kindred minds here. 💕 5y
gradcat @Crazeedi I‘m so glad you‘re liking these books! They are near & dear to my heart! I love them so much...latest one comes out in April—can‘t wait! ♥️ 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 What exactly are you doing? Is your school still open for meals to kids? It sounds like you‘re being the lovely person we all know you to be...helping others out who are needing help at this time...good on you, Andrew! ♥️ 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat I have a new one on my kindle, what is title of new one? 5y
Crazeedi @BookishMe you are so kind, I so agree with you, it's about coming together and caring for each other 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat The school is open for care during normal school hours for critical workers children supporting the fight against Covid 19, e.g. nurses, police, care workers, supermarket workers, delivery drivers, etc and vulnerable children. They all get free cooked lunches. Also serving packed lunches to free school meals children from the playground and delivering packed lunches to families self isolating or following stringent social distancing. (edited) 5y

I did take care of the one regarding women & nice poems or verses. Sorry for not being able to join. Also, did you get to reschedule your appointment? I‘m beginning to be worried about you...I‘m hoping you will feel better very soon, Diane. ♥️😘♥️ 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 Omigod, you‘re a treasure, Andrew...just don‘t neglect your own health! You‘d better listen to this old woman! Just kidding, but do be mindful of wearing yourself out, and take good care of yourself! 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat After tomorrow will be taking two days off, first time after two weeks. Also following yesterday taking it easy tonight. Encouraged all staff to log off at 4.15pm and spend the evening with their families. We just try to do our best. Trying to source vouchers today to send to key families. (edited) 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 I‘m sooo glad you‘ll be getting a little rest, but you better really REST! If I know you, you‘ll be looking out to see who‘s in need and how you can help. Please rest! 🛏 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat You know me so well, but thanks and look after yourself too.🥰 5y

II. Paolo Coelho's The Alchemist. So many celebrities were endorsing it- I didn't think I'd like it.

III. I remove it, but usually I check out books by the library and I love the sound the lamination makes.

Copenhagen Department Q has another cold case to solve - brutal double murder of a brother and sister 20 years ago. They find out that Kimmie, a homeless woman, holds the key but they need to track her down. Violent characters who hide behind their money are suspects. A bit long-winded but suspenseful and an insightful look at ruthless people. Can be read as standalone. Looking forward to next book & recommended to those who love Nordic thrillers.

AnneCecilie Yes, I gave this a pick. I like the writing and the characters in Department Q. 5y
EadieB I did like the story but felt the book unnecessary long and drawn out. 5y
Butterfinger The violence just left a bad taste in my mouth. This is not my favorite genre. Kimmie definitely needed therapy. They all needed therapy. It just makes one wonder why the boarding school did not catch their bullying. 5y
Marina_h I like Carl, Assad and Rose, but the overall plot in this book didin't really do anything for me. So it's not that I don't like the series, so far it's just one case I didn't find myself interested in. 5y

AnneCecilie I‘m not sure, but we do get some glimpses into how some of the people grew up. They were shown the brutal side of life and no empathy. If you don‘t learn to be kind as a child from the people closest to you, how are you to show it as an adult? They are brought up in environment where the facade is everything and where everyone can be bought to silence. As teens and adults, they bring this to the ultimate test again and again 5y
EadieB People learn by example and if they don‘t have good role models then they learn by what they see and experience. Evil begets evil. 5y
Butterfinger I agree with both @EadieB and @AnneCecilie - I can understand in Kimmie's case. It seemed everyone abused her. The only person that would have loved her unconditionally was the baby who was taken so violently. Adding to the 4th question, Kristian was evil. 5y

AnneCecilie That‘s a though question. Considering what we get to know about her childhood, beaten, have her hair pulled and locked into closets, by her parents and stepmother, I think life would have been hard on her from her though upbringing. Getting the friends she did at the boarding school, probably didn‘t help. So I‘m leaning towards the second (edited) 5y
EadieB I would agree with @AnneCecilie She was a victim of her early circumstances. 5y
Crazeedi I will be answering these after I read!! Thank you @Tove_Reads for leading the group! Appreciate you a bunch!😘🥰 5y
See All 8 Comments
Butterfinger Yes, she was abused. By her parents. Controlled by the men. But I know many who do not beat up strangers and give the killing hit. The rape and Kristina's beating drove her over the edge and I think the author did a great job describing her in a way that readers could empathize. But, she was still part of the group that abused people for fun. She collected mementos. 5y
Marina_h I agree with @Butterfinger . I don't think you can blame everything on her surroundings. I know she had a tough upbringing, but in some ways I still feel like she chose to become the perpetrator. I just think there's a long way from what happened to her as a child to killing people and seem to enjoy it.
@AnneCecilie @EadieB
5y
EadieB @Marina_h very true! 5y
AnneCecilie I‘m not defending anything Kimmie did, but I don‘t think she was born a bad person. I think it was her upbringing and meeting the wrong kind of people. She and her friends created a new normal. (edited) 5y

I love how Adler-Olsen writes his characters and the crime. Carl Mørk, Assad and the new addition to the group, Rose, are just wonderful characters.

The villains in this crime are just that, it‘s been a long time since I read about someone this despicable. They‘re rich and therefore think they‘re untouchable, and used to take what they want.

Towards the end, I was glad I knew this series continued.

Not allowed to use my right arm, so in bed reading today. Reading next week‘s #buddyread for #NordicNoir. Not much left. I‘m having this love/hate relationship with his books. I like the banter and all, the story is interesting, but it seems to go on and on, without having those real moving forward events written in an exciting way. Big things happen, but not with an intensity or expected excitement. Hard to explain.

Tove_Reads @EadieB I have a feeling you‘ll be put off by some of the sexual content. It‘s weird in many ways. 5y
Tove_Reads One of the most disturbing and raw violence books I‘ve ever read. Humans are the most evil creatures. 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads These books are interesting but too wordy and long and I can do without the explicit sex. I can understand love/hate! 5y

Crazeedi @Tove_Reads why does there have to be the explicit sex, I'm not a prude but it doesnt move the story most times. I havent gotten to this book yet 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads This sexual content also bothers me as books don‘t need it. Sounds heavy this one. @crazeedi @EadieB (edited) 5y

Andrew65 @EadieB It is @eadieb, although we are also busy researching and visiting dealers looking for a new motorhome. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads These #nordicnoir books do seem to take more effort to read. 5y

Andrew65 @EadieB It would be if we could decide which one we wanted! 🤯 Had our previous one for 14 years. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 It‘s hard to decide when you have many choices. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Still yet to find the one that meets all our criteria! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Are you buying new or used? 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Always go for new and seek to keep it long term (14 years this time), been saving for a long time, and hold resale value well. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 That‘s good because when you buy a new car it depreciates as soon as you pull off the car lot. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB It does but would still go that route every time. Work very hard so deserve the best! All about fighting for a great deal in the first place and I drive a very hard bargain. Regularly walk away and wait for that phone call! We will be going to big motorhome show at half term where will get all dealers fighting each other for our business! This weekend is about identifying the model we want in preparation for that. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Ha Ha! Sounds good! 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 wow Andrew I'm jealous! I would love to cruise the states in a motorhome. I'd even give up a house and live on the road, but alas hubby is a home body. Good luck on your hunt and bon voyage!!❣ 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Thanks, tell your hubby it‘s a home. Love ours, best place ever to read overlooking the sea in the comfort of your own home on wheels! 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 that sounds divine! I may have to sedate him and use subterfuge to get him to ever agree!! Lol 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 and it would be so easy to care for! And roll into a little town , visit a used book store, read a book, donate to goodwill or somewhere and roll on to the next destination!! 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Heavenly. This is what we do on the school hi,days. I can do any work I need to via laptop and Wi-fi. 5y
Marina_h @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads funny, I find these books really easy to read. I feel like they are pretty straightforward and the language is simple so if I had better time I would read it in a day or two. 5y
Tove_Reads @Marina_h I think I space out more often when I read his books. The story should have more action and dialogue. For example, I read Läckberg‘s books in a few hours. @Andrew65 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads @Marina_h The language etc makes them easy to read in one way I just feel the pace is a bit slow, and could do with more action and tension. 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads You know, I think I can understand your exasperation with the way these novels play out. The development of the crime, given that they are mostly historical, takes a lot from the pacing. I have to say that I remember the interpersonal relationships (and banter) much better than I do the crimes. I, too, don‘t really like hyper-sexualized and overly violent stories. I‘m the one who thinks the Kepler books are so violent. I guess it 👇🏻 5y

#NordicNoir #BuddyRead books for February. I‘ve heard that the Kepler books get better (most definitely hope so). I hope Läckberg keeps her style, and that Adler-Olsen gets straight to the point without long back stories.

EadieB @Tove_Reads You may want to list the titles in English too! Thanks! 5y
Andrew65 🤞🤞🤞 5y

EadieB @Butterfinger Ok thanks! The 2nd Lars Kepler book is The Nightmare. I just checked. The tagged book is the Jussi Adler-Olsen book. 5y
Crazeedi Thanks for info, I have them! 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads I think the Adler-Olsen series is going to let you down...that‘s kind of his formula—long backstories! Sorry to say that, but I think it really is the case with those. I only read three (I think?) of Kepler‘s. I liked the first one, but I‘m pretty certain the next two didn‘t make me want to keep going. Same with Erica & Patrick series after the sixth. Of all of them, I think my favorites are Jo Nesbo, Arnaulder Indridason, & Mankell. 5y
Tove_Reads @gradcat Have you read Ninni Sculman, Mariette Lindstein, Cilla & Rolf Börjlind, Pekka Hiltunen, Liza Marklund, Anne Holt? 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Yes to Anne Holt, and no to the rest of them. You would recommend them? I‘m always looking for new Scandinavia/Nordic/Finnish etc noir books...I‘d love to read them! Do you have a favorite? I‘ve finished all or most all of my favorite writers‘ novels. ♥️♥️♥️ 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Wow! Oops! I looked them up. There are a couple of problems: Schulman-I don‘t read Swedish; Lindstein-only one out in US so far; Börjlind-my German is not good enough for contemporary novels; Hiltunen-yay-two in translation in the US; and there are 7 of Marklund‘s series in translation in US. Did/do you like Marklund? Maybe I could start with hers...I see she wrote one with James Patterson...??‍♀️ 5y
Tove_Reads @gradcat Börjlind books are translated. I love that series! I read Marklund years ago, but they are good. My fave Finnish ones have not been translated. Antti Tuomainen is supposed to be really good and I just got one of his books. Sad that Sculmans are not translated. 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Thank you so much for the recommendations. I really love these books, so I‘m really happy to find more, plus they will work so well in my challenges! Thanks again!! ♥️♥️♥️ 5y

Pickpick

Danish police detective Carl Morck takes on a cold case that literally appears on his desk one day, leading to a long buried trail of murder and assault. This Nordic-flavored police procedural was a suspenseful and well-plotted read, but it is also fairly brutal, including violence against women, animals, and people in general. This is the second book in the series, but it didn't seem to hurt that I hadn't read the first.

Finished this detective novel yesterday. It‘s the second in Adler-Olsen‘s Department Q series, and set in Copenhagen. I loved the first one (The Keeper of Lost Causes) and this one was a bit of a disappointment. The pacing was slow throughout, and I never love the kind of detective novel where you know who the villain is from the start.

Still working my way through this one — every time I pick it up I enjoy it, but it‘s not nearly as suspenseful as the first one in the series.

Think of American Psycho, but like a whole gang, and plopped in Denmark. Adler-Olsen has an interesting structure to this book but it is really violent and almost none of the female characters come off well. (That said, I do want to read the next one since there‘s a hint that Mørck and Hardy might work on solving the crime that caused Hardy‘s injuries.)

balletbookworm However, the translation of this book is so Anglophilic in style and idiom that it doesn‘t seem a Danish crime novel at all. It may well have been set in London by a Londoner. The English regional accents in the audiobook narration don‘t help either. 7y
TheWordJar I felt the same way about this book. The treatment of the women and Carl‘s treatment of Assad (my favorite character in the books) really turned me off. I enjoyed The Keeper of Lost Causes more, and I‘ll probably give the next book a chance, too. 7y

Adler-Olsen is still one of my favourite Nordic noir writers! This was a predictable story but the idea of the book was not to be unpredictable but tell the stories of several people and how they ended up in a situation like this. This was a very interesting read! In some parts the translation could have been better. When Assad spoke it was evident that some of the bad Dannish was translated badly in Finnish and the moment lost its meaning. 😊📚

I've sometimes noticed that some men writers have a challenging time writing believable female characters. This time it looks to be true as well. Rose feels a bit too hastily written to be really believable. But then Kimmie feels like an actual real person. So he has the talent if he decides to use it when writing about females...

#TBRtemptation post 8! This is the 2nd installment in the Department Q series. Detective Carl Mørck works to solve Copenhagen's coldest cases. Like the case of the murder of two siblings decades earlier. A suspect confessed. But not is all as tightly shut as thought. Renewed investigation will lead to street-dweller Kimmie, and her secrets that can bring down powerful, influential people. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Andrew65 I need to get to the Department Q series. 7y

So I've been on a terrible reading slump - for the last around 2 weeks I've been so swamped at work and so tired when I get home that I just haven't been able to make the will to read. It's been really missing from my life. Anyways yesterday I finally got home slightly early and started on a crime novel managed to get really into the novel. Hope this means my slump is over, because I really feel the lack of reading!
